Do you wish you could have all the Mega Man classic games 1-8? Do you wish you could play all the early classic Mega Man Games? Well now you can. Yes, The Mega Man Anniversary Collection contains the games 1-8 plus the Power Battle Games as well. So I will be reviewing, critiquing, and comparing this game to the original titles. So lets get to it

Story: 10
Since this is a collection of games each game has its own story (plot)

  • Mega Man 1- Dr. Wily steals the robots that him and Dr. Light constructed to help mankind. Wily wants world domination and for the world to know he is a top Scientist. He leaves behind Rock n Roll who are lab assistants. Rock volenteers and is upgraded to the fighting Robot Mega Man. Mega Man heads out to stop Dr. Wily
  • Mega Man 2- After his defeat in the first game Dr. Wily creates 8 of his own Robots to defeat Mega Man and to take over the world. Mega Man goes out to eliminate the threat
  • Mega Man 3- Dr. Wily claims he has returned to good. Wily and Light work on a peace keeping Robot. To get it to work they need crystals guarded by 8 new robots. Has Dr. Wily turned good, and  are the crystals a death trap for Mega Man? Mega Man and his new assistant Rush (a robot dog) head out.
  • Mega Man 4-Dr. Cossack has claimed he has invented new Robot Masters to defeat Mega Man. Cossack claims he is tired of the world ignoring his work. However who is really pulling the strings here. Mega Man heads out and discovers Cossack is not who he seems and that a familiar person is at it again.
  • Mega Man 5- Proto Man (Mega Man's Brother) seems to have gone haywire by kidnapping Dr. Light and sending his own Robot Master army. Dr. Cossack upgrades Mega Man's Buster. Mega Man wonders why is his brother turned bad and is it really him. Along the way Mega Man discovers that Proto Man has been framed and somebody else is pulling the strings.
  • Mega Man 6- Mister X a Billionaire holds a tournament for countries to enter their Robot Masters in to see who is world Champion. Dr. Light sends Mega Man to make sure things go smoothly. Suddenly Mister X says he has played second fiddle to Dr. Wily and says the Robot Masters are part of his army for world denomination. Mega Man sets out to find out who is Mister X
  • Mega Man 7- Dr. Wily had been captured and jailed by Mega Man. However Wily knew he would get caught so he had new Robot Masters hidden away in his lab. They activate and spring Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily sets out to conquer the world again. Suddenly a new Robot and his wold dog Bass and Treble show up. Just who is Bass and what is Dr. Wily's new scheme this time?
  • Mega Man 8- Two Robots are fighting in space and crash on Earth. One of the Robots is later determined to be Duo. The other Robot has a new energy source. Mega Man heads to the scene and finds Duo injured and needing repairs. He also finds that Dr. Wily has discovered the new energy source. Who is Duo and what is his mission. Mega Man, sets out to recover the evil energy and stop Dr. Wily
  • Power Battle-Dr. Wily has rebuilt his old Robot Masters and is trying to take over the world. Mega Man and Proto Man set out to defeat Dr. Wily. Bass also joins the good guys to prove he is the strongest
  • Power Battle II- This game has different sub stories in it. But Dr. Wily is using his old Robot Masters to conquer the world again. He is also working on a new powerful Robot.

Okay I really liked how all the plots in the original games were left unchanged. Sometimes in remakes the plots get changed. But that is not the case in this game at all. Capcom really did a good job with this collection. As it should be no surprise I give the Plot a perfect 10 out of 10

Graphics and Controls:9
The Graphics in this game are nicely done. In fact a lot of the graphics have been tweaked to make them more modern while maintaining their classic style. The colors remain the same as they were in the original games. The stage backgrounds are the same as they were in the original games. The sprites are about the same but they have been upgraded. However why oh why did Capcom not fix Mega Man 1's glitches. That is really the only negative concerning the graphics. I do not know why Capcom did not fix that game's problems. Maybe they wanted to make it look authentic like the original game. But still they could have fixed that game's problems. The other games do not have lagging or anything like that.

The controls are basically good they are smooth and do not appear to be sluggish at least in the games 2-8 and the power battle games. The only problem is the controls still feel sluggish in the first game. Again, I thought Capcom would have taken the opportunity to fix that games glitches and controls. But they didn't so that is really my only complaint. At the end of the day I give the Graphics and Controls a 9 out of 10. Capcom not fixing Mega Man 1's problems keeps me from giving this a perfect score

Sound: 7
The sound in this game was mostly good. Mega Man 2, 4,5,6,7, 8 and the power Battles had their original sound in them which made those games special. I was glad to see the sound tracks were left unchanged. However Mega Man 3 had a different sound track than the original Mega Man 3. Why oh Why did Capcom do that? Mega Man 3 had a special sound to it and is regarded as having very memorable themes. Why did Capcom feel like they had to change the stage themes is beyond me. They kept the other games music the same so why did they change 3's. I really liked 3's music in the original game. Also why did they not fix the tingles in Mega Man one. Mega Man one as it being the first game had tingles in it. So I was hoping they would have fixed that when making this collection of games. It makes me wonder were they trying to make it authentic? On the other hand did they even want to full with it. After all they certainly did not make 3 sound track authentic

Putting my tornado rant aside, The other sounds of the game are great. Buster shots still sound powerful especially the charged ones. Enemies still have their powerful sound that lets the player know they mean business. Its just a shame that they had to mess some things up with the game. Still, despite the butchering of Mega Man 3 and not correcting 1's problems. I give the sound a good 7 out of 10. Its not horrible it just could have been done much better

Replay Value (Addictiveness): 9
As it comes to no surprise this game has high replay value. I like it that you can play all the classic Mega Man Games 1-8 plus the power battle games. I remember when I saved my money and bought this collection of games. I played it as soon as I got home. I still like to play this collection of games. I really like to play 2, 4-8, and the power battles in this game. They maintain the classic feel that as I stated made the classics so special. The reason I do not give this a perfect 10 is because of how 1 and 3 were treated in this game. 1 I do not play that much in this collection because of the tingles and glitches. 3 I do not play much because of the different sound track. However I put that aside and just play the other games. So the replay value gets a 9 out of 10.

Depth: 10
It should be no surprise that the collection has very high depth to it. I mean after all this is Mega Man we are talking about here. Mega Man games are infamous for their amount of depth in them. This collection maintained that. The depth was not changed at all. Every game has power ups to to find, enhancements, secrets, extra weapons, and items to collect. The later games 4 and up have more depth than the earlier ones do. Mainly because those games require stages to be revisited. The early games you could not revisit stages so you had to get all the items in one run. The later games required you to revisit the stages to get all the items. In addition, the stages in the game are the same length as they were in the original game so that adds playing time. Each game takes a long time to beat. I really like games that have depth in them to me it makes the games more special. So I was glad Capcom did not take items away or shorten stages. I give the depth a 10 out of 10

Difficulty: 8
Mega Man games are known to be difficult. The Original games were difficult because of long stages, stage layout, touch bosses, and enemy placement. The original game required skills, reflexes, creativity to get all the items and a little bit of luck to beat as well. Yeah the Original games were very tough, but I like games that really challenge you it makes them special. It also makes conquering them seem like an accomplishment. So how did the Anniversary collection compare to the original games in terms of difficulty?

Well the difficulty was toned down some in this game. First of all you have a support character that if you press a button they will give you hints, show you were the best routes, and which bosses are weak to weapons. That really takes the difficulty down somewhat. The original games did not have a support character you were pretty much on your own. That however, is what made the original games even more special is it required memorization to know were everything is and which bosses were were to which weapon. Second this game gives you makers to know which routes are the best way to take and which one has the most items in it. While some might find that helpful. I am an old school guy so I liked having the choice to chose and later come back to the stage and go the other route. So these two things bring the difficulty down

Still, though the games have their share of difficulty and are still difficult. The first game is difficult due to the control and glitches. Despite how the game tries to help you in the other games bosses are still bosses and enemies are still enemies. The stage layouts are not changed and are still long as well as full of death traps. So even though you may have a marker the stages still require skills to beat.

As I stated Bosses are still Bosses. Yes they tell you which boss is weak to which weapon. However, defeating the bosses still require good aiming, reflexes, and creativity to beat. Most of the bosses are fast and have deadly weapons just like they did in the original game. Some of the Robot Master Bosses are still a pain to deal with. Another thing that has not changed is enemy shots still do a lot of damage to you. You will still find yourself losing health quickly due to the powerful enemy shots.

Enemy placement has not changed. Enemies will dive out of the sky, hit you from behind, or just gang up on you. The original games had difficulty due to enemy placement. The collection is no different. You will literally need to be paying attention to avoid getting hit. As I also mentioned Mega Man is a game you cannot afford to get hit a lot in due to the enemy shots doing a lot of damage. Thankfully your buster is also powerful and will do a lot of damage to them.

So, while the game tries to help you out with the support characters. It still requires skills, reflexes, creativity, and luck to beat. The stages are still the same and the bosses are still the same. I really did not care for the support characters or the route markers again I'm an old school guy. But I was glad they did not change the difficulty in the game. I really like games that challenge you. Thus, I give the difficulty an 8 out of 10. I would have given it a 9 or a 10 had it not been for the game trying to help players out by offering route markers and support characters

Overall: 9
Overall I really liked how the Anniversary collection remade the games, well except for 1 and 3. The other games were nicely done. So if you missed out for whatever reason on getting the classics rather it be, the games were before your time, you could not get the games at that time, or just never got a chance to play them, then this collection is for you. I want to think the Anniversary collection came out in 2004. I saved my money for this one and when I got the money I bought it and played it as soon as I got home. Growing up in the 80's and 90's this was like relieving my childhood NES and SNES days.

I was so glad that they did a good job of remaking these games. So many times game companies have remade games only for them to suffer in quality from the original. Most of the games do not suffer in terms of quality. The graphics, sound, and depth were unchanged. I really like it when games are remade maintaining their old school feel to them.

However, this game did have some minor problems. I feel like Capcom wasted an opportunity to fix Mega Man ones problems. Mega Man one when it game out was known for having glitches and sluggish controls. I would have though the makers of this game would have tried to fix that game's problems. I do not know why they didn't do that maybe they were trying to make it authentic or what.

Second, I really do not like how they messed up Mega Man 3's soundtrack. The original Mega Man 3 was special with good graphics, good controls, depth, difficulty, and it was known for its awesome soundtrack. While some stages in the Anniversary's 3 version left unchanged there were some that were changed or butchered. The old saying goes if it is not broke then don't fix it. Well, Unlike Mega Man 1 3 was not broken so it did not need fixing. I do not know why they changed 3 and did not fix 1. To me it should have been the other way around keep 3 the way it was and correct 1's problems. So I do not get that. As I have stated me being an old school guy I do not play 3 that much in this collection due to them changing the awesome soundtrack

Third, and this is just me, I really did not care for the support Characters or route markers. Maybe they were trying to make this game like the X series. But the support Characters made sense in the X series but did not really  make sense in this game. Some may like the support characters and route makers in this game. Its really a minor issue when you think about it, It is just that I'm an old school person and I liked having to guess which route to take, trying to figure out which bosses were weak to which weapon and memorizing the paths. I also liked it that if I guessed wrong on a route I could go back through the stage again adding depth to the game. I like difficult games, and why was the difficulty toned down in this game I do not know. On the other hand, this game still had its difficult moments just like the original game did.

Overall, this is a great master piece of old classic Mega Man Games. I also liked how they added the Power Battles in this game. It introduced the Power Battle games to America. As most Americans did not get a chance to get original copies of those games. The problems I described are very minor. Some players may not mind them. If you did not get a chance to play the Original Mega Man 3 game then the new soundtrack may not be an issue to me. If your an old school guy like me maybe it won't bother you. As for the difficulty being toned down maybe the support and route markers do not bother you. Still, I usually put them problems aside because this collection of games was nicely done. I like to play this collection of games. I think it is fun just like the original games were.

I think this game would be a great introduction to the Mega Man franchise for younger gamers who did not get a chance to experience the original games.  Also if you do not have a NES or SNES for whatever reason then this is a great game as you can play the classics via this collection. Its a great collection aside from its minor problems. As for recommending this game: Yes I would recommend this game. As I have stated the problems I saw with this game are minor and may not bother other players. This is a great way to revisit the classics are introduce someone to Mega Man. So I recommend this game and I give it an solid 9 out of 10 rating

I hope this game will cause to enjoy one of the most popular video game series ever in Mega Man. Maybe this game will introduce you to Mega Man. I also hope this causes you to go back and play the originals

God Bless, Shalom and as a Christian I say Blessings in Christ and as always happy gaming an enjoy
