I loved The Gambler and it wasn't because of awesome action scenes or great music or stuff, it was because it was a smart movie with a great story. I told my friends I wanted to see Unbroken, but they wanted to see this and I am happy that I did.
The movie is about Mark Whalbergs character who is a gambler and keeps borrowing money to gamble but keeps losing. He owes the casino 240000 dollars and borrows 50000 from a dangerous man to gamble to get it back. He makes almost enough but then loses all of it. He then actually gets all of the money to pay back both people from his mom but loses it all again. He then goes through a very elaborate scheme to get all of the money back that is fun to watch. There are a lot of spoilers, so only read if you saw it or don't care.
The dangerous 2nd man says that if he doesn't get a basketball player in his class to win his next game by less than 7 points, he will hurt someone. At this point, he owes 200000 to the casino and 60000 to this guy. He then goes to a third guy and borrows the full 260000 but does not pay it, he also goes to the casino and manages to get another 150000 loan. He pays none of his loans and now owes 770000 dollars. He uses the 150000 to bribe the basketball player to win by 7 or less, which he does. He gives the 260000 he borrowed from the 3rs guy and gives it to another guy from his class to go to Las Vegas and bet on the same point spread, so now he has 620000. He pays off what was owes to the 2nd guy and does one final gamble and wins to pay off the casino and 3rd guy.
Did I forget to mention he was a professor and I wish I was in his class? 10 minutes into the movie there was a scene in the classroom and after that scene ended, I was like "wait, what's this movie about again?" I did not care for the gambling, except for the scheme, more the violence, but I did love all the scenes that took place in the school.
Mark Whalberg played the main guy and did a great job as a suicidal gambling professor who simply doesn't care. His mother was played by some famous celebrity, but I forget who and all of the actors performed so perfectly together to make the movie so awesome.
As for music, there wasn't really there own music I think, most of the music were actual songs or maybe even a few people singing, but its was good and a few of the songs helped increase the sense of dread in some scenes.
Graphics and effects don't really apply here except for maybe 1 or 2 violent scenes, most of the movie was just angry talking and a lot of gambling, and the occasional night long run, but that had no effect on how good the movie was. I have only gone to two movies this year, but I expect that once the year ends, this will be high up on the list of best movies of 2015.
