Since its very first installment, the Toshinden series has depicted Super Moves and Desperation Moves for each character. The display of this moves has been changed game after game. In Toshinden Subaru,  Super Moves create a small yellow aura under the feet of the player executing them, while also freezing the image for a while before the attack is launched. Desperation Moves, in order to be differentiated from Super Moves, create a blue aura instead. Super Moves consume 1 block of you Overdrive Gauge, while Desperation Moves can only be used when being very low in health or after using Kishin Kourin (a power up which lets you inflict more damage at the cost of slowly depleting your health).

Toshinden Subaru features a total of 13 characters, distributed in 4 teams and a single entry. Every fighter has 2 Super Moves, with one exception, and a Desperation Move. These moves can be either projectile-based, melee attacks or, in very specific cases, throws or healing moves.

Listed here is the easiest way to perform each move. The main reason isn’t just that, but also that the R1 and R2 buttons are mere shortcuts to use the most powerful attacks of each character, and it makes more sense to list them instead of complicated combinations.

Puella’s Team

Fen

Wind Bohemian: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3200

Hits: 1

Holding his harpoon horizontally, Fen launches a spiral-patterned wave against his opponent.

Sky Bohemian: R1+R2

Damage: 3300

Hits: 1

Fen gives Wolfy the order to attack. Wolfy then flies above his opponent, becoming giant during the process, and proceeds to crush his opponent with his back.

Fight Wolfy: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4030

Hits: 8

Fen gives Wolfy the order to attack. This time, Wolfy performs a series of thrusting attacks into his opponent, setting him/her on fire in the process, before finishing off with a “somersault”.

Lancelot

Flower Garden: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3240

Hits: 3

Lancelot does a mid-distance jump, with a backflip included, before thrusting his sword to the ground, which creates a small force field to damage his opponent.

Rose Typhoon: R1+R2

Damage: 3635

Hits: 6

Lancelot performs five thrusts while going forward, the last of which leaves his opponent reeling, before finishing with a Flower Revolution attack.

Rose Revolution: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4130

Hits: 6

Lancelot charges towards his opponent, attacking three times with his sword. He then performs a back somersault kick that sends his opponent straight to the ground, and upon landing, Lancelot stabs him/her one final time, creating a small field of energy around them.

Puella

Angel Song: Forward+R1+R2

Puella sings a sweet and angelical song that restores her health instead of damaging her opponent. Also, this attack freezes the screen for a few seconds, so you cannot be attacked while healing.

Cockatrice: R1+R2

Damage: 3690

Hits: 6

Puella creates a ball of pure energy in front of her to damage her opponent.

Destiny Arrow: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4200

Hits: 1

Puella creates a crystal-like heart and launches it towards her opponent. The background is then changed to what seems a different plane. Puella stands before her defenseless opponent, and charges a lethal arrow that she then throws towards her opponent, with such force that shatters the heart that imprisoned her opponent.

Subaru’s Team

Naru

Hell’s Gate: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3020

Hits: 11

Naru dashes forward, sending her opponent flying. She then jumps, while upside down, and delivers a bunch of rotary kicks.

Rainbow Splash: R1+R2

Damage: 3690

Hits: 7

Naru performs six forward somersaults, the last of which sends her opponent flying, and then performs one last somersault, this time backward, to finish him/her off. During each somersault, Naru’s trajectory draws an arc of light of a different colour, matching the seven colours of the rainbow (hence the attack’s name).

Hell’s Inferno: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4470

Hits: 12

Naru charges towards her opponent. She then delivers a variety of kicks and slashes before doing a back somersault and a front somersault to send her opponent flying. In the air, Naru tops off the attack with a Deadly Raise.

Subaru

Kuujin Rasen Zettou: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3000

Hits: 1

Subaru swings his sword diagonally from his right shoulder to his left ankle once, then he does the same vice versa and shoots a massive fireball towards his opponent.

Jigokumon: R1+R2

Damage: 3630

Hits: 6

With his right hand, Subaru launches a fireball towards his opponent. If it connects, the opponent is encased in a flame shield which lifts him/her off the ground, before the shield transforms in what resembles a seal that renders him/her defenseless. At this point, the background is pitch black, with a wide circle of flames around both fighters. Subaru then charges towards his opponent, and while in the air, slashes him/her while rotating alongside his sword a few times, before ending with a massive vertical slash.

Byakki Moshuu Ken: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4200/4400

Hits: 12/11

Subaru charges towards his opponent. If he’s close enough to his opponent, he will strike first with his shoulder before delivering a good bunch of kicks and slashes, and will end with a massive Hishouzan. However, at enough distance, the shoulder hit will miss, but Subaru will still continue the attack starting with a vertical slash. Strangely, when the attack starts with the slash, it does a little bit more damage, even though it misses one hit.

Rook

Boisterous Dancing: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 2160

Hits: 12

Rook performs two crouching somersaults to get close to his opponent. If it connects, it will deliver a middle kick followed by a low one, another middle one and a high one. Rook repeats this sequence two more times, before the last high kick sends his opponent flying.

Thunder Cracker: R1+R2

Damage: 3285

Hits: 5

Rook attacks with his right punch, then with a Consecutive Gear that, instead of fire, uses lightning, and finishes off with an Ultimate Magnum.

Skyhigh Destroyer: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 2920/3060

Hits: 10/12

Rook delivers a punch with his left hand, while holding his nunchaku, then another one with his right hand and finally sends his opponent flying with a vertical whiplash. The attack can start with either of this three attacks, but the middle one will only count as a hit if the first one connects, and of course, the damage will be slightly greater if all hits connect. Once his opponent is in the air, Rook gives chase, and delivers a bunch of kicks with his right leg before smashing his opponent to the ground with a final vertical kick.

Genma’s Team

Miyabi

Gekka Shirayuri: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3500

Hits: 1

Miyabi grabs her opponent from up close, and then jumps up very high, beyond the atmosphere if judging by the background. Once at the peak of the jump, Miyabi puts herself and her opponent upside down, before violently plummeting to the ground head first. As Miyabi stands up, the background changes to a lily being exposed to the moonlight, in a poetical reference to the position her opponent adopts after the crash.

(Hougi) Tsuki Shizuku: R1+R2

Damage: 2895

Hits: 5

Using her ninja powers, Miyabi draws a meteorite from outer space to crash upon her opponent, creating a massive shockwave.

Muso Batto: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 3360

Hits: 8

Miyabi charges towards her opponent, and slashes him diagonally from left to right, before performing the same attack vice versa immediately after. Then, starting from a crouching position, she delivers a bunch of slashes while spinning and getting up, before delivering the final slash that even cuts across her opponent.

Genma

Shingetsu Hakko: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 2700

Hits: 3

Using his witchcraft, Genma emanates a dome of energy around him to damage his opponent.

Oniguruma: R1+R2

Damage: 3600

Hits: 1

Genma summons the head of a demon, surrounded by flames, and launches it towards his opponent.

Naraku Oni: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4200

Hits: 1

Genma punches the ground and seemingly opens a portal in the ground that launches towards his opponent. If it connects, a gigantic hand appears from the portal, grabbing his opponent and mercilessly crushing it before fading.

Bang-boo

Set Ready: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3315

Hits: 4

Bang-boo tackles his opponent from side to side three times, flying up as the first attack lifted his opponent off the ground, before smashing him/her to the ground with both his arms.

Atomic Cannon: R1+R2

Damage: 3800

Hits: 2

Bang-boo fires an atomic bomb (hence the name of the attack) high into the air. Upon exploding, shrapnel rains down all around Bang-boo, although quite a distance away from him. This is one of only two Super Moves to not make your opponent fall down to the ground, instead, he/she still stands tall after taking it.

Final Cannon: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 3105

Hits: 4

Bang-boo’s arms turn into giant mills that create a stream of electrified air for a few seconds. This is the only Desperation Move that, like Atomic Cannon, doesn’t make your opponent to fall down to the ground.

Eiji’s Team

Zero

Zero’s attacks all involve an unknown monster hidden within itself.

Triton: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3270

Hits: 7

The monster traps his opponent in a vortex of lightning between both his hands for a few seconds, then crushes him by clapping his hands.

Proteus: R1+R2

Damage: 2500

Hits: 1

Through a special order, Zero unleashes the monster, who delivers a powerful punch at a blinding speed.

Asklepios: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4644

Hits: 10

Zero instructs his inner monster to bring his opponent close to him. The monster then calmly watches as Zero delivers a bunch of kicks and slashes, before both the monster and Zero deliver the final hit at the same time.

Eiji

Shin Enshin Shura Ha: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3420/4860/6210

Hits: 2/3/4

Eiji’s sword becomes extremely large and engulfed in flames. Then, Eiji swings it from right to left, leaving his opponent reeling, and once again from left to right to finish the attack. Depending on the distance, and maybe some random factor too, the attack can vary between 2 and 4 hits.

Goka no Kurenai: Down+R1+R2

Damage: 2000

Hits: 1

Same attack as above, but this time is only one hit and the swing is vertical. It also leaves the opponent reeling, instead of smashing it to the ground.

Shin Jigokumon: R1+R2

Damage: 4745

Hits: 5

From his left shoulder pad, Eiji emits a kind of torii that imprisons his opponent. The background changing to a different plane, Eiji charges towards his opponent, engulfed in flames, and delivers five powerful slashes.

Shin Byakki Moshuu Ken: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4730

Hits: 21

An empowered version of Subaru’s attack (not in vain was Eiji his master). Eiji charges towards his opponent and delivers to him/her the biggest blowout of his/her life, between kicks, slashes and hits from his sword’s sheath, before ending with a massive Hishouzan.

Eos

Hyperion: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 2730

Hits: 6

Eos performs a low sweep with her wand, before emitting from its tip what appears as an energy dome.

Astraea: R1+R2

Damage: 3950

Hits: 1

Eos summons her “dragon”, which flies through the background for a while, before finally ramming into the opponent. Meanwhile, the opponent can still be attacked for even more damage.

Dionysos: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 4380

Hits: 11

Eos charges towards her opponent, delivering a bunch of kicks and strikes with her wand that leave her opponent reeling. In this state, Eos summons her “dragon” again to deliver the final blow.

Single Entry

Vermilion

Verm the Ripper: Forward+R1+R2

Damage: 3602

Hits: 10

Vermilion gets out his hidden machine gun and fires a barrage against his opponent.

Death Marionette: R1+R2

Damage: 5015

Hits: 16

Same as before, but now he grabs his machine gun with his right hand, keeping on the left hand his normal gun, and fires a barrage from both weapons. Listed here is the maximum number of hits I’ve been able to record. Also, this is the second Super Move to not make your opponent fall to the ground.

Flash Back: Back+R1+R2

Damage: 7500

Hits: 2

Vermilion takes a semi crouching stance, which he maintains for a while. If the opponent gets too close, or if Vermilion is about to get hit, the attack will be triggered. Standing up, Vermilion will fire his two guns, dealing massive damage.

Since its very first installment, the Toshinden series has depicted Super Moves and Desperation Moves for each character. The display of this moves has been changed game after game.
