The first installment of Mario Party for the Gamecube came with a good bunch of minigames. Here I’ll detail every single one of them, how to obtain them and where can they be played.

To start with, we have the following categories: 4 players, 1 vs 3, 2 vs 2, Battle, Bowser, Story and Etc.. 4 players, 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 2 are the options after a round ends, either in Story Mode or Party Mode. Battle happens when a player steps in its square in the board, and the minigame will be selected by voting, after the coin recollection from all players to serve as prize. Bowser, as the name implies, will happen when Bowser decides so after someone steps in its square. In Bowser, all that matters is to not be the loser, instead of winning. Story, as the name implies, are obtained only in the Story Mode, since they are 1 vs 1 games where the owner of the board you just cleared challenges you before giving away its gift. Etc. are very special, so I’ll explain later how to obtain them, alongside the Extra Room.

Some games are bonus games, which are played only to gather the maximum amount of coins. Some other have personal records to set. I list my own records because the starter ones are ridiculously easy to beat (the Extra Room ones start at 0).

So, enough explanations for now. Here’s the list of all available games and the controls to play them.

4 players

Manta rings: A repeatedly to move on, control stick to move around.

An underwater race. Pass through the rings to gain points, but be careful to not touch the enemies! Normal rings are worth 1 point, golden rings provided by the manta ray are worth 3 points. The player who reaches the end with the highest amount of points is the winner.

Slime time: A repeatedly to escape.

Get rid of the slime! It will be easy at first, but be sure to not lose momentum, or you will be thrown back! The first to get to the central zone within the 30 second time limit, wins.

Booksquirm: Control stick to move around.

Find the holes in the pages to get through. Each page falls down faster than the preceding one, so hone your reflexes and find a hole quickly! The last one standing without getting crushed by the falling pages, wins.

Mario medley: B+A breaststroke, L-R (alternate) backstroke, B-A (alternate) freestyle

You will swim in 3 different styles, one in each run: first is breaststroke, second is backstroke and third is freestyle. Keep up the pace, and watch out your health meter, depleting it means losing mobility. A good strategy is to save up the whole meter for the last run, to allow for a winning sprint.

Personal record: 52’’ 20

Avalanche!: A repeatedly to accelerate, control stick to steer.

Sky down the mountain while an avalanche follows you! Take advantage of the jumps, and be careful with the obstacles. First one to clear the descent wins. Steering isn’t easy, it will need some runs before doing a clear course.

Domination: A repeatedly

Mash that button! You have 10 seconds to press it as many times as you can. What will your limit be?

Personal record: 91

Paratrooper plunge: Control stick to move

Glide through the clouds to gather as many coins as possible. Be careful, 4 hits and you’re gone!

Toad’s quick draw: Control stick to move the target, A to shoot.

A wagon full of balloons will be opened before you. After roughly 10 seconds, Toad will raise a flag of the colour that needs to be shot down. 3 correct shots will declare the winner.

Three throw: A to jump, B to throw.

Three layers of baskets… 3O seconds… Anything else to say? Ah yes, I forgot, the middle layer baskets, which are all golden, are worth 2 points instead of 1. Also, midway through the minigame, the direction of the baskets change, so there will be few free spots left. Score the most points to win.

Photo finish: L and R to rotate the piece, control stick to move it, A to drop it.

Puzzle time! You have 30 seconds to put back together the 6 pieces. Take advantage of the fact that the animation shown in the photo is still in movement when piecing it back together. The first to complete the picture, wins.

Mr. Blizzard’s brigade: Control stick to move.

A survival game lasting 60 seconds. Avoid the snowballs being launched to prevail. Caution with the big one, the ball is immense! The minigame with the highest chances of having more than one winner.

Bob-omb breakers: Control stick to move blocks, A rotate right, B rotate left, X and Y

The most addictive minigame in the whole game without doubt. Time to play some tetris, sharing your space with your foolish adversaries. The goal is to reach 100 points as fast as possible. Try to not just stick to your personal space and use your adversaries combos to your advantage.

Long claw of the law: R move right, L move left, control stick up and down, A to catch.

Find and catch the wanted character. There are 3 hidden somewhere behind all those doors. Be the one to catch all 3 and victory is yours.

Stamp out!: Control stick to move, A to jump.

Paint time! In a very particular manner, I must say. Anyway, the key is to at least colour up a 5% of the picture, very easy to achieve. 30 seconds is the time limit, the one to paint the highest percentage of the picture wins.

Mario speedwagons: R to accelerate, A gearbox.

3,2,1… GO! A drag strip race of short distance, the first to reach the goal wins. Be careful to not accelerate too much before the start, or you won’t be able to achieve a high speed.

Personal record: 9’’30

Take a breather: L-R alternate to breathe.

You have 10 seconds to catch your breath. After that, you will have to endure as much as possible underwater. Pretty simple.

Personal record: 9’’40

1 vs 3

Candlelight flight

Solo Player: Control stick to move

Group: Control stick to move, A to shoot the water gun

The solo player must resist the attacks of the group and keep the candle burning when the 30 second timer runs out. 5 hits means a loss for the solo player. Be careful where and when to shoot, since the gun’s range is close and you will not move for a couple of seconds.

Makin’ waves

Solo player: Control stick to move

Group: Control stick to move, A-A for Ground Pound

The solo player must balance the weight for 30 seconds. The group will try to knock the solo player off by sending waves from all directions. If the solo player falls, it’s a win for the group.

Hide and go BOOM!

Solo player: B/A/X/Y light a fuse

Group: B/A/X/Y select cannon

A minigame relying heavily on luck. The group has 4 cannons to hide in. The last few seconds, the group is off-screen, and the last pressed button will be the choice. The solo player has 3 tries. If he fires all other players, it’s a win for him/her/it.

Tree stomp

Solo player: Control stick to move

Group: Control stick to turn, A to move forward, B to go backwards

The solo player must evade the giant and clumsy robots for 45 seconds. If this wasn’t enough, banana peels can appear on the track. Sometimes, golden bananas may also appear, which speed up however touches them. Avoid these if you’re the solo player, you need absolute control over your movements. Any contact with the robots is a loss for the solo player.

Fish n’ Drips

Solo player: B/A/X/Y/L/R sequence shown

Group: B/A/X/Y/L/R button shown

Both parties have to fill the tank for the Cheep Cheep to swim. Whoever fills it faster wins. The solo player must input a 6 button sequence, while the group has one button to pass the bucket behind. The group must do a good teamwork to go fast, as the solo player has an advantage with a full sequence.

Hop or pop

Solo player: Control stick to roll around, A to jump

Group: Control stick to adjust direction, A to jump

The solo player must try to pop the group by running into them within 60 seconds. The solo player has fluid movements, but the group are restricted to jumps. A basic jump can be immediately followed by a bigger one, and another one after it. This has an advantage, the group can do abrupt changes of direction which the solo player can’t follow up. If any member of the group remains unpopped, they win.

Money belts

Solo player: Control stick to move

Group: Control stick to move

As a bonus game, the key is to obtain the maximum number of coins within 30 seconds. The group is on a conveyor belt right beneath the solo player’s one. This means that the main resources for the group are whatever falls down from the solo player’s belt. Be careful not to fall or you will lose a lot of time.

Goooooooal!!

Solo player: Control stick to move, A to jump

Group: Control stick to adjust direction, A to shoot (hold for more power)

The solo player acts as a goalie, and has to avoid being scored 10 goals by the group in 30 seconds. The group must try to continually move the goalie from side to side to create an opening for easy scores. If 10 goals are scored, the group wins.

Blame it on the crane

Solo player: Holding A moves the crane, release to lower it

Group: Control stick to move

The solo player has 60 seconds to capture the group with the crane. Capturing a Shy Guy will make the solo player lose time. The group should try to hide between them, and be extremely careful with the speed to difficult their catch.

2 vs 2

The great deflate: A-A for Ground Pound

Both teams will have to deflate their Thwomps in less than 30 seconds. The higher the jump, the more air gets deflated. Coordination here is crucial, as well timed jumps produce better results.

Revers-a-Bomb: Control stick to move, A to press the switches

Bob-ombs are freely walking from side to side. Press the switches to divert them to your opponents. If 10 Bob-ombs explode in your side, you lose. If after 30 seconds this hasn’t happened, the team with fewer explosions wins.

Right oar left?: B+A paddle forward, B turn left, A turn right

Split screen for the first time. Each team paddles a boat through a grotto. During the course, obstacles like stalagmites and fire-breathing statues will be faced. The team to get first to the exit, wins.

Personal record: 43"48 (I never got to like this minigame, personally)

Cliffhangers: Control stick to move, A to hold on

Again, split screen. You have to climb the mountain up. When the controller vibrates, or when a !! signal appears (only if vibration is off), it’s time to hold on against the strong wind! Failing to hold on means you’re blown down, and have to climb again from a lower spot. The team to get to the peak wins.

Team treasure trek: Control stick to move, X/Y to see the map

One of the finest minigames. Each player starts in a corner of a maze. When the screen splits into 4 parts, one per player, each team has to find their treasure chest and its key, and then unite them to complete the game. One member can only carry one item, so teams will split up to find the items and then reunite somewhere in the labyrinth.

Pair-a-Sailing:

Boat driver: Control stick to move, A to speed up, B to slow down

Parachute sailor: Control stick to move

The final bonus minigame. As in the others, the key is to collect the maximum number of coins. Here, the screen splits in two, and you’re randomly placed as the boat driver or the parachute sailor. The driver is responsible for guiding the sailor into the coins, since the speed of the boat will affect the height of the parachute, while the sailor will struggle to move to collect coins. After 45 seconds, the minigame ends.

Order up: Control stick to move, A to open the box

Full screen again in here. Each team is presented a round table with a variety of ingredients. After a few seconds, the food is covered by boxes, and the table spins around a little bit. When it stops, Toad orders 2 food items. You have 15 seconds to reveal the desired food, and if you do, you earn a point. Scoring 3 points earns the victory.

Dungeon duos: Control stick to move, A to jump, B to pull levers, X and Y to rotate platforms, L and R to fill the balloon

My favourite, and a very complete minigame, almost an adventure on its own. The screen is split in two, one side for each team. We start with blocked paths. Each player must pull the levers twice for its partner to advance. Once done here, you’re faced with two rotating platforms. One member rotates them with Y to carry its partner to the other side, and the carried member does the same from the other side. Next there’s another platform, but this time it’s a single one, rotated with X. Repeat the process and you will face some pipe fun. First, there are 5 pipes, only one of them connects to the following chamber while the other 4 are connected between them. In the following chamber, there are 9 pipes, and the process repeats itself. After entering the correct one, both members arrive at the final scenario, where they must inflate the balloon. The team that successfully takes off in the balloon wins.

Personal record: 1’40’’83

Cheep Cheep Sweep: Controls stick to move, A to fish, B to empty the net

Full screen again. All players are in a pond with several Cheep Cheep swimming by. You have 60 seconds to catch as many as you can. Red ones are worth 1 point, while golden ones are worth 2 points. Your net can only hold a total of 3 fishes, so be sure to empty it every so often. Walk very slowly, otherwise you will scare away the Cheep Cheep.

Battle

Trace race: Control stick to move

A long path ahead awaits to be traced. To this end, you’re given a giant crayon. The path presents many curves and even loops, but it’s not that hard to follow. At the end, the accuracy of all players is calculated, and the most accurate is declared the winner.

Chain Chomp fever: Control stick to move

You have 60 seconds to survive against Chain Chomp’s charges, falling down to the lava pit and the fire emerging from the cracks in the stage. Whoever is the last one standing wins. If the timer runs out, all players still standing win.

Paths of peril: Control stick to move

You must clear a course in the least time possible. The course is split in 2 paths, one right and one left. One of them is a twisty, 90-degree turn maze, while the other one is simple and winding. This left-right choice must be made twice, first at the very start and once again after clearing the first path. The key here is to go as fast as possible without falling down, so be extremely careful if you happen to choose the twisty path, because it’s very narrow!

Bowser’s bigger blast: Control stick to move, R to press the pump

A game relying purely on luck. You’re presented a Bowser bomb, and 5 pumps connected to it. Each player has 5 seconds to select a pump, and if it happens to be the only one that activates the bomb, said player is eliminated. The next bomb will have only 4 pumps, and the next one just 3. The player that doesn’t activate any bomb wins.

Butterfly blitz: Control stick to move, A to swing vertically, B to swing horizontally

You have 60 seconds to catch as many butterflies as you can. The yellow ones give 1 point, the red ones give 2 points and the blue ones give 3 points. When the timer runs out, the player that has more points is the winner.

Rumble fishing: A to reel in

Time to hone your reflexes! The game is quite simple. All players are fishing, when suddenly your controller rumbles (the !! sign will appear if rumble is turned off), meaning you have a bite. The player who reels faster wins the game. It will be easy to know your position, the bigger your Cheep Cheep is, the faster you were.

Bowser

Darts of doom: A to throw

In this minigame, you have to throw 3 darts simultaneously to a spinning dartboard. You have 5 seconds to throw. The one who scores the least points is declared the loser and burned by Bowser’s breath. Hitting the center of the dartboard, that is, Bowser’s face, ends the game immediately and the player who threw is declared the loser and burned.

Fruits of doom: Control stick to move, A to select fruit

It’s time for Bowser’s dinner, and you’re responsible of it! Bowser will announce a list of fruits, a list that speeds up to barely understandable limits at the very end. Then, each player takes turns and brings Bowser a fruit. If said fruit was announced by Bowser, you survive one more round. The player who brings a fruit not announced, or brings too much of a fruit, is declared the loser and burned by Bowser personally, maybe becoming the main meal.

Balloon of doom: A-A to Ground Pound

In this game, players take turns to inflate a balloon. As easy as it may seem, at some point the balloon is going to pop, so be careful the player popping it isn’t you! There will be some hints when the balloon is about to pop, like the two Koopa Kids hiding from the burst or all players waiting their turn cringing when the active player does the Ground Pound. The player who bursts the balloon, or a player that doesn’t even attempt to inflate it within the 5 seconds time limit, is declared the loser and burned by Bowser.

Story

Bowser Bop: Control stick to move, A to bop

Minigame unlocked when winning in Toad’s board in Story Mode. The challenge consists on hitting the different Koopa Kid or Bowser heads that burst out of the furniture in the room. Koopa Kids are worth 1 point, while Bowser is worth 2 points. After the 60 seconds time limit runs out, the player with the most points wins.

Mystic match’em: Control stick to move, A to choose card

Minigame unlocked when winning in Boo’s board in Story Mode. You must get 3 copies of the same instrument in your hand to win. First, you discard a card, which remains face up, and cannot be picked up, and then you pick a face down card. If you pick a Boo card, your hand and all cards in the table are shuffled, and you get 3 new cards. The first to complete the trio wins.

Archaeologuess: Control stick to move, A to press switch

Minigame unlocked when winning in Shy Guy’s board in Story Mode. A game of odd-one-out, you must determine which of the 5 figures has a different shape from the other 4. A correct guess sends the figure flying towards the Shy Guy picture in the background. A wrong guess makes the figure fall over the player’s head. The first player to get 3 correct guesses wins.

Goomba’s chip flip: Control stick to move, A-A to select chip

Minigame unlocked when winning in Goomba’s board in Story Mode. 20 chips are placed face down in the playing field. Both players take turn to flip the chips and add their values to their personal count. Be careful, some have negative values! The first player to get 50 points is the winner.

Kareening Koopas: Control stick to tilt table

Minigame unlocked when winning in Koopa’s board in Story Mode. Each player is presented a board with 4 holes and Koopa shells. The goal is to put the shells into the holes by tilting the table. Be careful, as shells can pass by a hole if they go too fast, but once a shell enters a hole, it stays there no matter what. The first player to clear 3 boards is the winner.

Etc.

Bowser wrestling: A to advance on opponent (start), L/R alternate to shove opponent

To unlock this minigame, you must pass by Bowser while in his board and being under the effects of a Mega Mushroom or Super Mega Mushroom, for Bowser will challenge you to play a minigame. More than wrestling, it’s more like a sumo battle. Each player must shove his/her opponent out of the ring, but be careful with the stamina level. Randomly, Golden Mushrooms will fall down onto the arena, and the player consuming them is granted invincibility and his/her stamina isn’t decreased for a few seconds. The player who rings out his/her opponent wins.

Panels of doom: Control stick to pick tile, A to confirm tile/hit dice

Same unlocking requirements as the previous one, you have a 50% chance of either unlocking this one or the previous one. Both players are pitted in a 3x3 grid with tiles numbered from 1 to 9. Both players select one tile to stand, and the minigame begins. Each player takes turns in rolling a dice. The number that appears causes the same tile to break down. The player who takes out his/her opponent wins. There exists the chance of winning this minigame without doing nothing, as your opponent can be first to roll and be unlucky enough to roll his/her own number tile, thus somewhat “committing suicide”.

The final battle!

The epic finale of the game, unlocked after clearing all boards, Bowser’s included, in Story Mode. You are transported to a variation of the Party Cube to face off against Bowser and his minions throughout the cube’s sides. You have a health meter measured in 10 hearts, and each time you’re hit by anything, you lose one. No need to say that falling off to the lava pit is an automatic loss.

First and Third sides

These sides involve platform hopping. The first side has 4 platforms, with some fire jets. The third side has two different paths to follow, each with 6 platforms, some without fire jets, some with even 3 of them. You have 60 seconds to clear each side. Simply use the control stick to move and A to jump to another platform.

Second and Fourth sides

This time you must complete a puzzle. First, the puzzle only has 3 pieces, while the Koopa Kids will try to stop you, by dropping flaming cannonballs and mini-tornadoes. The second one features an 8 piece puzzle, with Bowser himself trying to stop you with his fiery boomerang. Complete the puzzle by Ground Pounding (A-A) over a tile, which will move onto the empty side.

Fifth side

Bowser decides to face you in person. It will have a health meter of 5 hearts. To harm it, you will have to connect 3 of the 5 switches on the perimeter of the arena. Ground Pound the desired switches, and they will be connected to form an ethereal triangle, which will be struck by a lightning bolt moments after being created, damaging anyone standing in said triangle. Of course, Bowser will fight back, charging at you and breathing fire. Draw Bowser to the triangle, let it be struck by lightning, repeat the process 4 more times to deplete Bowser’s health and the win is yours.

Extra Room

Aside from the Story Mode, Party Mode and Minigame Mode, there’s an additional place to note in Mario Party 4. This Extra Room provides either one player challenges to multiplayer challenges, divided into 3 categories.

Thwomp’s Backroom Ball

The multiplayer section. Here, Thwomp offers 2 boards to play like in Party Mode, but with no minigames whatsoever. It also has a variation of 2 minigames seen above.

Challenge Booksquirm

By playing the Booksquirm minigame once, this variation is unlocked. It consists in a challenge to see how many pages can you manage to pass. The minigame ends when ALL players have been squashed, unlike the original one. Be careful, after roughly 10-15 pages, there’s only 1 spot to go through, so be sure to have good reflexes.

Personal record: 24

Panel Panic

A variation of the Panels of doom minigame. This time, all 9 characters (the 8 available + Bowser) occupy each of the 9 tiles. Also, all characters roll the dice at the same time. The numbers rolled make their respective tiles to crumble apart, defenestrating the character standing on it. The process repeats itself as long as 2 or more characters remain alive.

Whomp’s Basement Brouhaha

The single player section. Here, the player is challenged to obtain the best result possible in specially designed minigames.

Jigsaw jitters

The only exception to the rule mentioned above is this one. Inspired in Photo finish, this minigame offers 3 variants: a 20 piece variant, a 30 piece variant and a 40 piece variant. It’s not a quick minigame, as the 40 piece variant can take roughly 5 minutes the first tries.

Personal records

20 pieces: 50”48

30 pieces: 1'32"38

40 pieces: 2'33"04

Barrel baron: Control stick to move, A to dig (must dig 3 times)

The player is in a desert place, with oil teeming under his/her feet. You have 60 seconds to get as much oil as possible. You will know where to dig when the controller rumbles (if not active, a ! sign will appear). Depending on how potent the rumble is, or the amount of ! signs appearing, the resulting oil geyser will be more or less abundant. Little rumble, or a ! sign, means a small geyser worth 1 point. Medium rumble, or a !! sign, means a medium geyser worth 10 points. Heavy rumble, or a !!! sign, means an abundant geyser worth 100 points.

Personal record: 250

Mushroom medic: Control stick to move cursor, A to choose

Time to be a doctor! 5 characters will enter the room, and they will be given a poisonous mushroom to eat. Only one of them, however, will be infected. To see which one, you will have to compare their heartbeats, and the one different to the rest, is the poisoned one. At first, you have 20 seconds to cure the patient, but each round you’re given 1 less second, until you only have 5 seconds per round. The game ends when you’re unable to find the infected character, or give the medicine to a non infected character.

Personal record: 35

Doors of doom: L to open left door, R to open right door

Yet another one of those minigames heavily based on luck. The goal is to try and cross as many doors as you can. One of them is the right one, the other one holds Bowser inside, which means game over. You have a 50% chance of choosing the incorrect one, but how many doors will you cross until that moment comes?

Personal record: 7 (the goddess of luck likes to ignore me)

Bob-omb X-ing: Control stick to move

You’re pitted in a closed intersection, in which you will have to avoid the Bob-omb for as long as you can. Some of them will simply walk around until they simply explode, but others will chase after you until exploding, and they can be damn fast. Being hit by an explosion means game over.

Personal record: 3'44"71

Goomba stomp: Control stick to turn around, A to move forward, B to move backwards

Remember the machine from Tree stomp? Well, it’s back for more action. This time, you will have to hit as many Goomba as you can. The game ends after 60 seconds of massacre.

Personal record: 39

Ztar

This character also has a special minigame for you. It is unique because it has 2 modes: Battle Mode and Free Mode. Battle Mode is a tournament against NPC players. If completed, the Free Mode is unlocked, basically the multiplayer, non-tournament version.

Beach volley folley: Control stick to move, A to hit/dive, B to jump, B-A to spike (opponent’s shot only)

Well, the title says pretty everything. A 2-on-2 beach volley match. The first team to score 5 points will be declared winner.

EX Palen : Looking forward to trying what seems to be a fun game, in the future. This guide makes it seem worth it, except that I have yet to try Mario party 1 & 2 first. I've only played #3 so far.
