Bomberman 64
This game was treasured by many children back in the day for what it was. A balanced game, with good characters and fun bosses. Power ups were not too complicated, but instead balanced well and just plain fun at times. (red bombs anyone?) The game was complete with 5 worlds and a huge bonus for collecting all 120 gold cards. And who could forget the true ending of the game? It added an entire new layer of depth to the whole thing and even gave us a returning character.
Regulas.
But when looking back at this game, I noticed something that's kindof odd, yet more apparent when you take a closer look at it.
Scroll down below if you will.
We can gather a few things just from looking at these facepics. But, did you notice something?
Orion doesn't have one!
No only this, but I have to ask another question.
Why make facepics that are used so little in the game?
I mean, hey, we have Altair, and Artemis, but their facepics are only used during the intro cutscene. Sirius's pic is used a lot, as is his android model's. His angry facepic not so much though.
Regulas's facepic is used probably just as much as Sirius's angry facepic, or a little more actually.
But I want to know something.
Why make facepics that would appear so little in the game? Seems like a waste of work, I mean, yeah, I am glad that they're their, its just that game with facepics have a lot more dialogue, you know?
And was there a beta facepic for Orion that we never got to see?
Now, I don't consider the mini bosses you faced in Bomberman 64 any normal villains. The masked Trio is very, conspicuously different. (Unlike the Asral knights. . . . grrrrrrrrr)
I mean, look at them.
Each one is very unique, and has a character all their own. For what screen time they did get.
Orion is apparently silent, and lazy but tactical. Throwing Bomberman into the lava rather than using bombs.
He escapes and attacks again piloting a giant machine called Hades which was actually a mining vehicle that he remodeled!
Artemis fought to the death, and appeared as a female commander with attitude, as we see her giving orders to troops in the intro rather than one of the other masked trio members.
Regulas faced Bomberman, but flies off to be seen again after the defeat of Altair. Apparently loyal to his master, and even SPOILER.
He was fixing for a fight, but wasn't rash or unwise either. That last fight was epic, so epic. I can't believe that Hudson went that far to do that with the last battle! I love it! Why doesn't Mario ever do this?
I wish they were developed more. But that's just the way it is I guess. But all things considered, and if we look at what Regulas says before the true ending of the game, we kindof learn a little bit more about where they all came from. What they came from.
In the end, because of the diverse character design, the existence of facepics that weren't used that much surprisingly, and the awesome backstory, I would have to say . . . . .
I think that there were going to be more story elements in this game. Not a whole lot more, but still, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that there were more plans.
Either way, I'm satisfied with what they did. And I personally think that this was the beginning of epicness from the Bomberman series.
Hudson did a really good job not only capitalizing on the N64's power, but also making Bomberman more of an awesome series. All those of you who complain that Bomberman is a multi player game stuck in a retro format can go home.
This game was epic. ^^'
PS:
Not sure why I'm putting this here, but it's titled on DA as "More Like Regulas Bomberman 64"
