Games are so good that they have to be remade again. Donkey Kong Country 3 was a hit for the Super Nintendo. A few years later the game was remade for the Game Boy Advance system. I will be reviewing the remake and comparing it to the original. Story:8 The story remains unchanged from the original game. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong go out for some fun. However, the boys do no come back. Dixie Kong worried goes out looking for them. Dixie after asking some of the other Kongs learn that the boys had not been seen since they passed by. She stops by Funky Kong’s shop and he brings out Dixie’s cousin Kiddy Kong. They borrow a boat from Funky Kong and discover foot prints. The duo lean that Donkey and Dixie have been kidnapped by the kremling crew. They also discover that the Kremlins have a new robot ruler named Kaos. However, is Kaos really a new ruler or is he being controlled by a familiar enemy to the Kongs? Dixie and Kiddy keep the question in mind as they set out to rescue their friends. To rescue their friends the duo must get through forests, mountains and the arctic. I was so glad that they did not change the plot. I really liked the originals plot. I thought it was good the way it was. Having Donkey Kong kidnapped along with Diddy was nice. I liked it how they tried to introduce a fake bad guy in this game. Rare made sure not to reveal who the bad guy really was till later in the game. So the players think that the fake bad guy really is the bad guy that takes creativity. A lot of times games that are remade will have some tweaks made to their plots. Since the plot was unchanged I’m going to give it the same rating I did in the original game 8 out of 10. Graphics and Controls: 8 The graphics were amazing in this game. The Mountains look like mountains, the arctic levels make you think you are in a nice cold snowy place. I really like how the trees stand out in this game. The game was very colorful overall. The sprites were also very good and nicely done too. The Kong's look like they did in the original game. The enemies also look exactly the same as the original game. I also liked it how the water in the lake stages really moves. It makes it look real and it was a nice touch. I also like how the lightning stage was done it reminds me of a stormy night. The controls though were not as sharp as the original game. It seems like sometimes that Dixie or Diddy can be sluggish at times. I do not know if that is because the Game Boy has less buttons and uses a smaller system than the SNES? It does not feel that way all the time, but I did notice it in the water stages. It feels like in the water stages the controls are not as smooth as the original game. So while the graphics were amazing the controls were not as sharp as the original game. I was hoping that they would be though. Again I want to say it is not horrible but it can be noticeable at times. The controls is what brings the rating down slightly. I give the remake’s controls and graphics a good 8 out of 10. In the Original game I think I gave it a 9 out of 10. The SNES version had a special charm to it. Sound: 6 If Donkey Kong Country 3 for Game Boy Advance suffers through anything it is the sound. Rare changed the soundtrack from the original game. I will be honest I did not like that. The original game had an amazing sound track and fitted the stages nicely. The SNES version had a special sound track that was very good. I still find the SNES tunes to this game catchy. The soundtrack in this game did have some nice tunes to it. But I felt like the tunes did not fit the stages very well. It seemed out of place for the most part. Now the sounds the enemies make was unchanged so that is good. Enemies still moan and groan when they are being knocked out. The bonus levels still have their amazing sounds. It’s a shame they had to change the soundtrack though. In the original game I gave the sound rating a perfect 10 out of 10. Since they changed the soundtrack and it seems out of place it brings the rating down to a 6 out of 10. Addictiveness (Replay Value) 8 Okay, the original game just had that charm that made you want to play it over again and again. This one is still a good game and I still go back and play this one a lot. But I will be honest I go back to the original a lot more than this one. Do not get me wrong this game is a nice remake and I do have fun playing it. It is just hard to top the original. The Remake has good graphics, depth and difficulty. I guess the minor issue with the controls and the so-so sound track make me play this one less compared to the original. So I give the replay value an 8 out of 10 Depth: 10 The Original game had a lot of depth to it. The remake really shines in depth. Donkey Kong Country 3 for GBA got an extra level added to it, so that means more stages. It also means more items to collect and more bonus levels to find. Also the GBA version added more quest games. In this game the players can complete Funky Kong’s challenges to earn rewards. The extra levels, the extra items to collect, and the challenges really bump up the rating in this game. Games do not get much better than this concerning depth. I give the depth a perfect 10 out of 10 rating. Difficulty: 9 The GBA version is more difficult than the original version. The games extra difficulty comes from the extra level, the extra bonus areas to complete and the extra challenges. The enemy placement in this game is about the same as the original version. Both are difficult regarding enemies. The enemies just love to hit you from behind or knock you down into pits. It is so easy to get hit in this game. Also the bonus levels can be hard as they require quick timing to complete. The items are hard to earn in this game as sometimes they require skills and creativity to get. It is very difficult to get a perfect score in this game as well. I also found the game to be difficulty due to the sluggish controls. Sometimes when the controls are sluggish it is easy to get hit, or not complete a level in time. The control issue is not a huge problem but they are instances in the game where it causes a lot of problems. So the GBA version requires more reflexes, more creativity, and in some cases luck to master. Thus I give the difficulty rating a 9 out of 10. Overall: 8.9 The GBA version does have its flaws and it is not as sharp as the SNES version. Still at the end of the day this game is a fun game to play. I got this game when it first came out. I was curious to see how it held up compared to the original game. For the most part the game held up well. I also liked this game for the same reason I liked the original version. Donkey Kong Country 3 had a science theme to it. I really like science so I was thrilled that this game along with the original had the science theme in it. I have a Biology degree and I do study Meteorology on the side so yeah I was thrilled about the science theme. I was also thrilled about the science theme because I have always been interested in science even as a child. Okay enough of my career rambling and back to the review of Donkey Kong Country 3 for GBA. While this game was good in the graphics, depth, and difficulty it had its flaws. Why oh why did rare have to change the soundtrack of this game? The original game had an amazing soundtrack that did not need to be changed. This game’s soundtrack does not even match the stages except for a few times in the game. I felt like the soundtrack in this game really hurt this game comparing it to the original version. I also felt like the controls were lagging as I stated. I do not know if that is because this is a game boy game or what? The original game had very smooth controls in it. Now, the controls are not usually a problem but when you are trying to get an item the sluggish controls can make the challenge more difficult. Overall this is a solid game despite its two biggest flaws the soundtrack and the controls. The game’s depth is amazing and is the type of depth a good game should have. The plot was unchanged which is a good thing. The game’s difficulty I really like because it challenges your skills, creativity and reflexes. I like games with that kind of difficulty. Now if the two biggest flaws of this game the soundtrack and controls do not bother you. You will find nothing wrong with this game. In my review of the original game I think I gave the SNES version a 9.3 or a 9.4, that game was that good. This game is a nice game for a remake and it deserves a high rating as well. But due to the two biggest flaws of this game it does bring the rating down some compared to the original game. At the end of the day I give the GBA version an 8.9 rating. The game is still good and it was a nicely done remake except for the two issues I have with this game. As far as recommending this game. I would recommend this game especially for those that did not get to experience the SNES or the SNES version. But with that being said I have to recommend that you try to find a way to play the SNES version of this game. I think most players who pick up the GBA version will enjoy it. I hope you enjoy this game and that you have fun playing it. Blessings in Christ and happy gaming. Donkey Kong Country 3 was a hit for the Super Nintendo. I would have been a bit harsher on the sound and music department. I noticed some of the sound effects were missing from the original from both enemies and environment. The music soundtrack was okay and maybe grows on you in time but the original was better. Everything else in this game was great as was your review! |
