I remember playing Sonic a whole lot since I was 7 and nowadays, I see these videos on YouTube of chainchumper beating the Dark story of Sonic Adventure 2 with minimal rings while at the same time, getting an A rank on all levels. I see other challenges created on the Internet from time to time and I thought you could try some of these challenges.
What kinds of sonic challenges would you want to try from this list below?
- Low Score
- Minimal Rings/Ringless
- Score Attack
- Ring Attack
- No Damage
If you want to try those challenges, here were the original created rules for these challenges:
- Low Score - In this challenge, you have to try to get the lowest score you can including the end of level tally bonus. Here is the list of 0 point bonus times:
Sonic 1 - 5:00
Sonic 2 - 5:00
Sonic 3 - 5:00-9:58
Sonic & Knuckles - 5:00-9:58
Sonic 3D Blast - Above 10 minutes
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 - 9:25.00
Sonic Heroes - 10:25.00
This isn't the full list, I can't confirm some games.
You also avoid collecting rings if possible in this challenge.
If you get hit without a shield without or with rings, you must restart the entire level.
- Minimal Rings - Like the name says, you must avoid all rings if its possible. If there's an enemy that can block you from avoiding rings, kill it if possible. If you can't avoid rings no matter what path you take, take the path with the least rings and try to avoid those if you can. Applies to all games. If there's an option where you can have only Sonic, do so. It makes it way easier to not collect rings.
If you collect rings, you must avoid taking damage except for when you have a shield that doesn't pull rings to you. If you have rings and you get hit without a shield, you would have to start over.
- Score Attack - In this challenge, you would have to get the highest score you can get in a single stage. The strategy is to find the best strat for rings while speedrunning the stage quickly to get a big bonus. Green Hill Zone act 1 is a popular example. The stage can be beat as fast as 25 seconds, and there are good ways to max the score.
In Sonic 1, collecting the invisible point bonuses are allowed. They don't exist in any other game.
- Ring Attack - For this nice challenge, you see how many rings you can get. If there's glitches that allow you to get rings you can't normally get, break the game with glitches. Glitches aren't cheating, and there a collection of them, such as game-exclusives, like infinite flying where you thundershoot as the flight character at level 3 into a kill plane or thundershoot right at a wall while hugging it tightly.
[IMPORTANT] Back rings aren't allowed! If there are switches that give rings, they are banned and sometimes restricted to just one use.
- No Damage - You just simply avoid all ways of taking a hit. Use invincibility boxes if you need to. You can't take damage when having a shield too, otherwise, you restart the stage. Recommended to try on the hardest stages in any sonic game or super hard levels.
The former 4 challenges are very strategic because they require a lot of planning to do.
