I am not a soccer fan. I never was and I never will be. Then why am I reviewing a soccer game, and why did I give it such a high rating? I will get to that in a second. My friend Ryan is a huge soccer fan and he convinced me to give FIFA a try. And I am glad I did. Even though I hate soccer, the FIFA video games a really fun and enjoyable, even if you don't like the real life sport that the game is based off of.
Graphics (10):
FIFA 14, especially the PS4 version, has some of the best graphics I have ever seen. Not quite as good as MLB The Show, but pretty darn close. Everything looks stunning, from the players, to the stadiums, to the fans, etc. Everything is extremely realistic as well, and all of the players look different. If I knew any soccer players, I am sure that I would be able to tell who was who just by looking at them. EA doesn't always have the best graphics, but they definitely put in everything they had when they made FIFA 14. Everything just looks amazing and is very well done. That is why I rated the graphics a 10 out of 10, because they are absolutely phenomenal.
Sound (9):
The sound in FIFA 14 is great. The music is good, the sound is clear, the announcers have a good variety of sayings, and the announcers are British, which fits in well with the game. Even though the announcers being British is appropriate for a soccer game, it does annoy me which is why I did not give it a 10. I find the announcers to be annoying. Their accents irritate me a little. Even though they fit the game perfectly and are really well done, they just don't appeal to me. I rated the sound a 9, but you could argue that it deserves a 10. The only thing that caused me to not give it a 10 was the accent of the announcers, which is a matter of opinion.
Addictiveness (9):
I came in thinking that I was going to hate this game. I thought it was going to suck. I did not think that I would enjoy it at all. Not only was I wrong, I also managed to get pretty addicted to the game. I played it (and still play it) pretty often. While it is not as addictive as NHL 14, FIFA 14 did hook me a little. One thing that makes FIFA 14 so addictive is the FIFA Ultimate Team game mode. Much like Hockey Ultimate Team, FIFA Ultimate Team is one of the most addictive game modes of any game ever. If you only want to play the game causally, you will be able to. Just as long as you do not play FIFA Ultimate Team. I gave this game a 9 in the addictiveness category because it definitely has some addictive qualities to it.
Story (N/A):
There is no story. You just play soccer. Just like any sports video game, it has absolutely no story at all.
Depth (9):
FIFA 14 has a lot of depth. Not only can you just keep playing games since they will always have different outcomes, there are also a bunch of other game modes for you to enjoy. These game modes include Kick Off, FIFA Ultimate Team, FIFA Interactive World Cup, Be a Pro, Skill Games, and more. Kick Off is you basic game mode. You choose a team and you play a normal game with that team. FIFA Ultimate Team is an online game mode. You start off with a team of crappy players and you have to try to build the best team that you can by playing games, buying and selling players, making coins, opening packs, etc. The FIFA Interactive World Cup mode is huge tournament that you compete it against players from all around the world for a cash prize! Be a Pro is exactly what it sounds like. You control only one player and you have to try to be the best player and make it to the Hall of Fame. Skill Games are a bunch of fun mini games that you can play to help work on your skills and make you a better player. Since there are a lot of different game modes that you can play and the game has unlimited replay value, I decided to give it a score of 9 out of 10 in the depth category.
Difficulty (9):
FIFA 14 is a very hard game to master. It requires precision controls, perfect timing, etc. It will be very hard for you at first, but it gets easier with time. There are also a ton of controls, and it is very hard to learn which button does what. FIFA 14 is one of the hardest sports games to play, and it is definitely not something that you can just pick up and become a pro at. It requires a lot of practice. I do not recommend FIFA 14 to people that get frustrated easily, because it is a very frustrating game. Until you get used to it, it is very likely that you will lose. A lot. I gave it a 9 out of 10 in the difficulty department because it is a very hard game to get used to, and it is still hard even once you get used to it.
In short, FIFA 14 is a very fun game. The graphics are out of this world, and the sound is pretty darn good too. The only complaint I have about the sound is that the British announcers annoy me. It is a pretty addictive game, especially if you play FIFA Ultimate Team. There is no story, just like all sports games. There is a lot to do in FIFA 14, so the depth gets high marks from me. It is a very hard game, and it takes a lot of practice in order to master it. Not recommended for people who get frustrated easily, but highly recommended to everyone else. Even if you don't like soccer, you will probably still like this game.
