Games are so good they had to be remade again. Super Mario Advanced 3 is a remake of Yoshi's Island I will be reviewing Super Mario Advanced 3 as well as comparing it to the original game. The question is will it hold up to being as good as the original?
Story:9 The story Super Mario Advanced 3 Yoshi's Island was left unchanged. The plot is exactly the same as the original game. The Mario brothers are born and a stork is carrying them to the Mushroom Kingdom. Kamek the evil koopa wizard, who is baby Bowser's caretaker, sees in the future the disaster these brothers will cause the Koopa kingdom. Kamek then decides he will capture the stork and the babies to prevent the upcoming disaster. Kamek, then flies out and captures the stork and baby Luigi, but he misses baby Mario. Baby Mario along with the map the stork was using falls on Yoshi Island on the back of a Yoshi. Yoshi talks with his friends and they decide they will reunite the brothers and liberate the stork so the brothers can go to their destination. Kamek is highly upset so he sends the koopa troop out to snatch baby Mario. Yoshi must defeat the koopa troop, rescue the stork and baby luigi.
Okay in the original game I gave the plot a 9 out of 10. Super Mario Advanced 3 brought nothing new to the plot. Thus I give the story of Super Mario Advanced 3 a 9 out of 10. In a way I'm kind of glad they did not change the plot here. The plot really did not need to be changed.
Graphics and Controls: 8 The graphics in Super Mario Advanced 3 were for the most part good. The backgrounds are nice and colorful just like they were in the original game. The waterfalls look like waterfalls, the clouds move to the music, and the winter themes look like winter wonder lands. However, the sprites were changed a little bit. In the original game the Yoshis had red feet. In Super Mario Advanced 3 the different colors of Yoshi's have different colored feet. For example the light blue Yoshi has yellow feet instead of red feet in the original game. I really did not like it, the colors look out of balance to me. Also, there is a point in the game were there is a lag. I do not know if it because this is a game boy game or what. I find that lag to be annoying.
The Controls were mostly good except there is a time were the controls feel sluggish and it goes along with the lag I mentioned above. In that stage the lag and the sluggish controls can cause you to miss your jump sending you into the pit. Aside, from that the controls were smooth in the other parts of the game.
In the original game I gave the controls a perfect 10 out of 10. Super Mario Advanced 3 brought the graphics and controls down a notch. That annoying lag and sluggish controls brings the rating down. I found the original game to have better controls. Thus, I give the remake a good rating of 8 out of 10 but nothing like the original.
Sound: 9 The sound in this game was left unchanged from the original. I'm glad they did not change the sound as Nintendo did with their other remakes of SNES games. The music is still awesome just like the original. The fortress stages still have that gloomy music to them. The caves still have their unique tunes to them. I was also glad there were no tingles in this game, which is nice. I do not like tingles at all. The sound the enemies make is left unchanged. Also when Yoshi hits an enemy with an egg it still makes a pow sound as it did in the original game. Now, when Yoshi gets hit baby Mario still screams to the top of his lungs. I find that to be annoying as I do not like screaming. I do not know if it is because of my Autism or what, but I do not like screaming. So if you are like me it is best to try not to get hit in this game. Since the sound was left unchanged I give the sound a solid 9 out of 10.
Replay value (addictiveness): 9 Super Mario Advanced 3 is a fun game to play. I enjoy playing this game as it has huge amount of depth and it is fun to replay the game after beating it. However, I find myself playing the original more. Do not get me wrong the replay value in Super Mario Advanced 3 is still very good, but due to the sprites and the one lag in this game. I find myself playing the original game more than I do the remake. That is not to take away from the remake. Because as I stated Super Mario Advanced 3 is still very fun to play.
Depth: 10 Now here is where the remake really shines. Everything the original game had the remake has. Flowers, red coins, and stars still have to be collected to get a perfect score. Just about every stage has a secret area that must be explored to get all the items. The game also allows you to unlock news stages and bonus games. If you get 700 points in a world you can unlock that world's bonus game. If the player gets 800 points in a world than that world's extra stage can be unlocked. However, Super Mario Advanced 3 added something to the original game did not have. If you beat the game than an extra stage will be unlocked in each world. The original game did not have that. So by doing that the remake actually has more depth than the original game. I find that interesting because usually remakes will take something out. So the depth of Super Mario Advance 3 really shines and I give it a perfect 10 out of 10.
Difficulty: 7 Super Mario Advanced 3 can be difficult in some areas. In my review of the original game I gave the difficulty a 6 out of 10. Super Mario Advanced 3 is slightly more difficult than the original. Enemies can bombard you in this game as it is so easy to get hit just like it was in the original game. Also the items can be hard to get some will require special items and skills to get as well as some creativity. Also it is easy to get knocked into a pit or miss a jump and fall into the pit especially during the auto scrolling stages. However, the game does offer several ways to help you out. Unlimited lives can be earned in this game by playing bonus games or just collecting coins. Also several items can be earned via the bonus games. Some of these items clear the screen of enemies, refill your star count, and show you were items are. So that brings the difficulty down.
But here is were the remake gets hard than the original game. The remake added extra stages if the player beats the game. So that adds difficulty as the extra stages are quite difficult to complete. Also the two stages were there is a lag in the game makes these game slightly difficult. Those two stages happen to be fortress stages so sometimes the lag will cause you to drop into the pit. I find it best to do an extra jump right before the lag to overcome the lag. Still it is so easy to miss and fall to your doom. Therefore, the difficulty in this game gets bumped up a little bit due to the extra stages and lags. I give the difficulty a 7 out of 10.
Overall: 8.9 Super Mario Advanced 3 is a great game and really holds up well. When I saw this was a remake of Yoshi's Island I was thrilled and bought this game. However, I was nervous because some of the remakes of the SNES games had changes to them that made them see not as good as the originals. I was hoping that would not be the case here. For the most part it wasn't. The music and depth were left unchanged which was quite nice. When I got this game I played it a lot and I found it to be fun. However, did I enjoy it like I did the original? Well I do like the original game better more on that in just a few. Despite the flaws in this game it was a nice effort to remake this game and it shows. If you did not get to play the original game than this one is almost just as good.
Their are a few flaws in this game. I did not like Nintendo changing the Yoshiis feet. I felt like red just went along with all of the Yoshiis in the original game. So I do not know why Nintendo felt like they needed to change it. It seemed like the shoes on some of the yoshii's did not really match their color. I also was surprised to see a lag in the two stages that I did. I wonder if that is because this is a game boy game and did not have as big of a screen to work with. The original game was for the larger SNES system. I just have to wonder if the lag was created due to them porting this to the smaller Game Boy Advanced system. Still that lag is annoying and it does pull the rating down some. On the other hand, I did like it that they added things in this game that the original game did not have. Adding the extra bonus stages was a very nice touch.
I guess due to the lag and different sprites I find myself going back to the original more. The original game was just so special in its own way. That does not take away from this game which is a remake. I still play this one quite a bit too just not as much as the original game. Now if you missed on on the SNES than you will probably find nothing wrong with this game. The flaws this game have are minor. So maybe they will not be a big deal to other players. So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game but I would also recommend you play the original version for the SNES as well too. Overall, I think this was a solid effort to remake Yoshi's Island the minor problems as I have stated or minor and some people will not be bothered by them. In my review of the original game I gave it a 9.6. Due to the minor issues the remake has I give it a lower rating, but still a high solid rating. I give the remake a 8.9 rating. |
