A very unknown game really. Not a lot of people know this ps2 game released on September 1st , 2006. But they should if they like wrestling, because it stars THE ROCK as the main character. And yes, you can kill people in the game by the rock’s actual wrestling moves. I picked up this game at a GameStop a few years back. Playing it, it’s a great game! But I should really explain why. So, this is my review of Spyhunter: Nowhere to run.
Story (7): The story is quite cliché, just a generic “take over the world plot” with Dwayne “the rock” Johnson as the main protagonist. The villains are none other them nostra. Yes, that’s the name of the villains, nostra. (Don’t even ask) They plan to use a special car called a G-6155 spy car, otherwise known as: the “interceptor” and with this car, they plan to take over the world! (of course.). You have to go through about 12 or so levels and then you get to the final level. (Quite a long level, I might add.) The problem I have is that is that it’s TOO cliché, like I stated above. And it really knocks it down by quite a margin, so story only gets a 7.
Sound (9): The soundtrack for this game is awesome. The main theme is techo-ish and upbeat, but the loading music is good too. (Yes, even the loading screens have awesome music for this game.) My favorite theme though, like I said, is the main theme. However, the in-game sound effects are good too. For example, if you shoot someone in the game, it actually sounds like you shot them, and not just a simple *bang*. Also, you can hear their neck break when you use a neck breaker on them. Even times where you use environmental hazards against them, it STILL sounds very realistic. As a result, it immerses me into the game, which I quite like. Since it has an awesome soundtrack and good, realistic sounds to immerse the player, sound gets a 9.
Depth (9): The depth to this game is all over the place. You have multiplayer, trailers, survival minigames, concept art, and much more. Another good thing about this game is that it’s very non-linear. The game can have a few paths out of the way that house a lot of goodies for finding it. The way you get the unlockables depends on the unlockable itself. You might have to do everything on the list in a mission, and others have you trying to beat a mission under a period of time and to unlock the classic spyhunter game, you have to find an arcade machine in the 7th or 8th level and activate it. And beating the minigames…………That’s another story. With all this stuff to do in the game and the minigames, I must give depth a 9.
Addictiveness (6): This game isn’t one I would call “addictive” Mainly because you have a limited amount of things to do in the game. It does have the whole 100% game going on including beating all the minigames for the sake of……beating for you completionists out there. But all it really has in the way of the actual game is a 3-4 hour game doing objectives and nothing else. It really doesn’t have much to keep you coming back for more, so I have no choice but to give addictiveness a 6. (im sorry, but I just have much to say about this section.)
Graphics (9): This game looks STUNNING. A lot of detail was put into everything. (For example, the 5th level, counterattack. Where you’re dropped into some woods to counterattack against nostra, and everything looks very natural, a lot of the colors in the palette blend well, and it doesn’t look like geometry shapes pasted to each other. And for another example, the second mission, Undercover. There is a light layer of fog, several stains on the walls, and it genuinely looks like a very musty, private boat.) The game also has never dropped frame rate significantly to the point of lag (at least, not from my experiences anyway.) Plus, the game will not be afraid to show people dying. While this isn’t as bad as some games like mortal kombat, it can get questionable. Some of the less violent ones: you thrown someone into a laser and another has you throwing someone off a boat. In would list more, but it might spark controversy on vizzed. (Even though the game as a whole really isn’t gory.) And for all those reasons, I’ll give graphics a 9.
Difficulty (9): This game is random with the difficulty. The main game itself is fairly challenging, (mainly with not enough checkpoints in the levels.) But can get quite brutal at the end with some VERY irritating space between each checkpoint. And the minigames………Don’t even ask about the minigames, just dont. Maybe it’s because I suck at video games, but to me, these are the hardest the game could ever offer. These minigames usually require you to survive against some of the hardest enemies in the game on a motorcycle, or a car, or a boat, but some require you to defuse bombs, one even puts the game on slow-mo! These minigames WILL test your patience against your will, as some minigames can take a VERY long time to beat, and you think you’ve almost won, only to get in the middle of a bullet and a wall and have the game (practically) say “You died! Game over! Ahahahahahahahaha!” Making you really wish to make you had the power to crack your controller into a pile of nuts and bolts. Solely for those minigames, and their brutality, Difficulty easily scores a 9.
Overall (9.5): This game holds up quite well today, it has very non-linear gameplay, the graphics are nice, sounds very good, and has a lot of depth. Overall, this game scores a 9.5. If you love some shoot em ups and have a knack for driving in video games, I would definitely check this game out. Thank you for stopping by to read my review. This is Mega Mewtwo x: signing out.
