I look at games like a coin, they have two sides, story and gameplay, for a game to be truly good both sides must be good. Wild woody is a 90s game for the Sega Genesis, and not one of the memorable ones. There are many aspects of the game I need to get into so let's start at the beginning. Graphics: The game's graphics are nothing truly special, they're average for the Genesis and are nothing special. But then again, graphics don't hold any true meaning in deciding a games reputation, so this category is simply for show. 7 Sound: The game is notable for having a soundtrack composed by Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, an American guitarist and songwriter. And is also known to have a short list of sound effects, mostly from Woody himself, so get used to hearing "Ow!" over, and over, and over again. 6 Addictiveness: Being addicted to Wild Woody is about as likely as being addicted to getting a brain freeze. The game's shoddy controls, dull environment, and brutal difficulty make this game very unattractive to the human gamer's eye. This is why it's important to note that no known walkthrough of this game has ever made it past the first realm. 2 Story: Though most may not agree I actually find the story rather entertaining. It's important to note that most video games of the 90s never had truly good or even realistic stories behind their games. However Wild Woody seems to make it's premise fairly creative and somewhat entertaining. The story revolves around an archaeologist who's uncovered an ancient artifact from an ancient temple. Under certain circumstances, (which are blown out of proportion in the game) the artifact has the power to successfully destroy the universe. The artifact itself is a miniature totem pole, consisting of five totems, due to an event in the game they are separated and all flee into universes they created themselves, where they can garner immense power and eventually destroy the world. One totem, low man isn't evil, and actually fears for the well-being of the universe, and uses his powers to create someone who can stop them, though in his current environment he doesn't have much to work with, leaving him the only choice of bringing to life an ordinary pencil, to save the world. Though it is a rather stupid plot line, what do you expect in a game starring a talking pencil? The animated cut scenes between gameplay is pretty cheap, but the voice acting and characters definitely don't make it boring or annoying. So though the game may not have been a star, at least the plot wasn't poorly stitched together. 7 Depth: Wild Woody's programming is it's ultimate downfall as an enjoyable game, but it's important to note that the game did have some potential. Though irritating in it's final result, the game did feature a more original combat system, instead of a typical run and jump strategy that was done to death in that era. The game is also important for the creative Draw and Defeat combat ability, that allowed you to gather notebook page as ammo, and sketch pads as weapons, allowing you to draw up a variety of items such as weapons to defeat enemies, or difference modes of transportation such as jet packs, sports cars, and pogo sticks to speed up the level. Though like most ground breaking ideas put into video games it didn't work out as well in the end, for example, though you can find plenty of paper, there are few sketch pad items for you to find, as well as a time limit on all objects makes it fairly useless, but I do give credit for trying. 5. Difficulty: There is a reason why there is no known walkthroughs of this game anywhere on the web(trust me I've tried) it's because this game is like nails on a chalkboard in game. The most gruesome offence by this game is Woody's poor jump ability, which is difficult to learn, and impossible to master. And of course Woody's poor ability to attack enemies, where you must jump on them and erase them(termed "rubbing one out" in the game manual) has a massive margin of error between hitting the enemy head on, and completely missing and taking damage when you make contact with them. But this entire failure of a combat system could be overcome if there weren't so many traps, obstacle, and enemies! One level of the game entitles at least 50 enemies, over 100 obstacles, and countless moving platforms and leaps of faith. This all culminates in the fact that Wild Woody is the hardest game known to mankind. And you can take that to the bank! 10 Overall, my review on Wild Woody with everything considered would have to be a 4. Because the game utterly fails in combat, level design, and overall entertainment value. Making it by far one of the worst games I have ever seen, and played. But hey that's just my two cents, if you really want to take my review into perspective, play the game yourself, and read this again and see how much it lines up. Thank you for reading, please respond to this review and tell me what you think. This was a pretty nice review. You put in some good details. I have played this game one or two times, and I find it pretty weird, but not a terrible game. It's not all that fun to play, but it's ok. |
