I love reading. Unfortunately, I don't do it as often as I like any more. This got me to thinking... how fun would it be to read a book with some vizzed people?! I've enjoyed doing a lot of things with you guys, and this just seems like a perfect activity. We could all go buy a cheap book, find a free one line, or even buy a cheap one on our phone!

We could discuss favorite chapters, how we feel about the story, ask questions about parts /symbolism we don't understand.....

There's a lot we could do! Just out of curiosity, would anyone be interested in this?

If you are, please state what kinds of books you like to read. Obviously, we wouldn't be able to satisfy everyone, but maybe we can get close?

I'd love to see this happen.  I love to read, but like you, I haven't picked up books as often as I should in order to read.

My interests:

I love all sorts of subjects.  If the book is clean and fun to read, I'll read it.  It doesn't matter what it's about.  But I tend to like Fantasy and Science Fiction most.  I love the Beyonders series, Percy Jackson, Redwall, among others.

I love humor.  I used to not care very much about that, but since I've become a sort of humorist, I love to read books full of laughs and puns and more laughs.  If a book is funny and insightful, I'll eat it up, whether or not I'm its target audience.  I once bought a good, clean women's humor book at a yard sale for 10 cents and loved it (I was young).  I would probably still enjoy it today, maybe even more, since I'd really appreciate more of the humor now (although I can't fully relate, since I'm not female).

I also love biographies and such.  Sometimes I enjoy biographies even more than other books I was interested in reading the most initially.  Well-written biographies balance interesting stories, humor, and insight well so that it inspires and interests the reader.  There are many biographies that are good but are really bland and uninteresting outside of its target audience.

I absolutely love comics.  Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Non Sequitur, Dilbert, Spider-Man, and others used to fill my free time.  I include manga and more traditional comics as well.  But I like none more than those that make me laugh and make me feel good at the same time.  Comics can sometimes give laughs that other mediums cannot, and greater laughs, too.  This is why I will always love comics.

I don't read much, but i really do think that this would be really fun to take part in. If we do this, I will be at every meeting with a couple of Vizzed sodas. Like I said, it seems really fun, and if we get enough people, I would like to take part of this.

I have my ways of finding Books online for free, so any book that isn't too complex (I have about an 11th grade reading level, so almost anything) I would be fine with.

My favorite type of book is of course Manga, but do to the fact a few people may not enjoy doing that, I guess we wouldn't go through with that.

But other then manga books, I do enjoy science fiction. It is the most interesting to me, and I like to talk about those kinds of books with friends.

I really like the idea and hope people would like to do this.

I am interested, but do I have to be committed to this? I mean, I guess you can say I'm very picky about what I read. So I may not want to join in if a book I don't very much find interesting is being read. Likewise, I may join if the book piques my interest.

I think you already know this about me, but I do love reading (what I call) children's books. Some examples that I've already read include; A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and uh, some others I can't remember right now.

However, I'm into very realistic themes. Perhaps a bit of drama and suspense for excitement. Romance? Err, maybe. Historical themes fascinate me to no end, especially if it's written in first person perspective. It's as if I had traveled back in time when I read those.

I actually already have a whole bunch of books that I never got the time to read. Some of these include; The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion by Jane Austen, and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I wouldn't mind reading something more modern, it would actually be easier on me if it were.

I guess reading all these is a bit demotivating if I have a whole bunch of textbook material I have to memorize. But it's always more fun to read when you're not alone.

Interesting I love reading but like most people I don't do it as much as I like anymore. This could get me back into reading more so I'd do it.
Me I'll read anything. My favorites are fantasy and mysteries.

This is a great idea! I'm always wondering about what to read and I either end up reading something really bad or then nothing at all. We should definitely try this out and agree on some rules, such as does the majority's choice win or should the book be something everybody agrees on (that could be difficult, though!)

I enjoy literature of all sorts so I can't really put my mind on any favourite genre. Sometimes I feel like reading something funny or preferably a story coloured with dark humour, but at times horror or crime stories are the ones to spike my interest. I'm not very familiar with fantasy, even though I've spent my childhood reading Harry Potter and various vampire adventure stories. I also finished the Song of Ice and Fire-series a little while ago, so I'd be very happy with anything similar.

I'm super excited about the responses I have received so far.  I wasn't expecting so many people to be interested, nor was I expecting such detailed responses! I guess I should have expected it, seeing as a book club would be filled with readers, but still... XD

As for what book to pick, I'd of course want to pick one that would make the majority happy.  I'll pretty much read anything so long as it doesn't have magic or tons of sex in it.  If you guys all opted for a book with magic, I could just skip that book and wait for the next one, so it's not a big deal.    The same could be said for anyone who doesn't like a book pick.

Do you guys have any suggestions for titles? I want to make sure that whatever we read is on a level acceptable and understandable to everyone. I have a few free ones on my phone I thought might be okay.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I also thought we could do something like read a series that has been or is being created into a film. For example, we could read the Hunger Game series, or the Divergent series ( Don't know what the actual series name is, sorry).

These aren't free, but I wouldn't mind paying for them.

Mistress also gave several good suggestions.

Singelli : I haven't gotten into the Hunger Games-films so reading the books would be a thrill! So I'm all in with the that series, Mockingjay appears to be the name of the last book. The plot of the Divergent-series sounded quite interesting, but I think I'd be more interested with the Hunger Games. Any other opinions?

I've read treasure island and it's not too easy of a read.
I would recommend From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming. It's a good book that isn't too hard a read. There is a film that is AMAZING.

You guys can suggest any books you want and then we'll take a vote.  Also, thanks for the information, from both of you! I've only read The Secret Garden out of all the books I've listed, so I don't know a lot about the others.

Singelli : Redwall (by Brian Jacques) might be a good one (starting with Mossflower).  It had its own TV series for a while.  But the main attraction, of course, are the books.

Also, Beyonders (by Brandon Mull) is a good book series.  It takes inspiration from The Lord of the Rings and modern teen fantasy, but succeeds in not feeling too off-the-wall.  It takes itself seriously, but can be funny when it's needed most.  Although it draws a lot of inspiration from various sources, it's quite original (especially the first book).  His previous series, Fablehaven, is also worth a read, but is far less original and exciting to read.

Just an fyi, barathemos is on the money with treasure island. Despite the image the name conjures up, its actually a heavy read. Its not really as much adventure and fantasy as you expect, and things like death, and maiming are recurrent themes.
Dont get me wrong, its a good book, but its not a good choice if you want multiple age groups to take part.

I actually wouldn't mind reading the Hunger Games series. I get a little intimidated by huge books with multiple series, so it would be a great challenge for me to read something like that. Plus, I thought the movie was awesome.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the books might not be available in the bookstores here. And 3 books? Might be a little too much for our first activity.

Hm... an easy read... I can only think of (what I consider) children's books, really.

If anyone hasn't read it yet, I recommend A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

It's an easy read that has a feel-good ending as well. It's also one of those books that got turned into a movie (twice!) with Shirley Temple being in one of them.

I haven't seen either movies yet (but I probably will, since I love the book so much) but I can definitely reread A Little Princess over and over again.

thenumberone : Thanks for the confirmation. I had read the first page or two and didn't think it was that bad.  I'm glad to know I should remove that from the choices!

I would like us to start this pretty soon if you guys are up for it.  ^.^  So it's time to vote.  Keep in mind that whatever book is chosen, if you want to participate, you have to be willing to acquire the book somehow... either through a library, buying it, or purchasing it on your phone, etc etc.

The choices seem to be (if I haven't missed any):

Hunger Game series (first book)
Divergent series (first book)
A Little Princess
The Secret Garden
Mossflower
Beyonders
From Russia with Love
The War of the Worlds
The Little Prince
The Good Earth
Black Beauty
Pride and Prejudice
Persuasion
Wuthering Heights
some kind of comic?

Can we vote for our own choices? From Russia with love would be my choice, as it is a thriller, but anyone under the age of 14 should skip the beginning. If we can't pick our own, The War Of The Worlds would be my pick. I can use my library to get it, so I'm really open to any of these. I hope this goes through and we have a ton of fun.

I shall vote for The Hunger Games. I'm still very interested in it and I found it in my local library!

That's funny. I only remember suggesting A Little Princess. How is it that all the books that I claimed I haven't read are listed down? Your letting your fascination show, hehe.

Hm.. this is tough. Right now, I'm torn between The War of The Worlds and the Hunger Games. Perhaps I'll wait until other votes come before I make my final decision.

To be fair, I won't vote for my own stuff.  I'm going to caste my vote for The Secret Garden.  It's been so long since I've read it, and I think it'd be a great, uplifting read for the gang.
