So last lesson we worked on the basics of holding the pick, and how to hold the guitar. This lesson we'll work on the notation, the fretting, and then in the next lesson we'll work on the rhythm and classification of notes and music.
Notation - The composition of notes on a musical staff.
Musical staff - Has five lines that have notes that can go below, above or on.
Fretting - Is the process of holding down a string in a position in which if played would make a note.
Tablature - An alternative to notation in which six strings are represented by six lines where numbers are place in order of which is played first. The numbers stand for which fret is supposed to be played, and is displayed on a certain line to signify which string is played. NOTE: With Tablature the strings go from the bottom string, which in standard tuning is the high E string, or the thinnest string. As it progresses down it goes to the thicker strings.
Now we will analyze a key for guitar notation /
Memorization of things like this is key in being a musician and learning a instrument, especially guitar.
So in standard tuning the strings are tuned to E A D G B E and that is also the note letter for the open notes on the six strings. Before you try to play/fret these notes. First practice strumming the strings, strum down. Then up. Then watch carefully and strum each individual one. After that start from the bottom and go to the top strumming each individual one. After doing that attempt it while closing your eyes or looking away. Eventually you get used to the guitar neck and string placement, but at first it is a tricky matter.
After doing those exercises with strumming refer to the first picture. Get a lined piece of blank paper, and draw the musical staff, and draw the notation from the first image and attempt to play it while referring to the second image that we'll refer to as "the key."
That's all for now. Next lesson we'll work on the measures of music, notation rhythm, beats, and so forth so you can soon begin playing small pieces of music.
