Oh man this game, let me tell you I am a big fan of the Legacy of Kain series but this was indeed one of my first favorite games of all time, well mostly. Soul Reaver was in my opinion an underrated game by most and the lack of advertising I believe may have hindered most from even hearing about it however I will say that this game was a huge push for heavily story based games. I mean the voice actors are spot on in their emotions and depth of their character that they are portraying and the sound and feel of the game is in a way otherworldly. Ok now that you obviously know that I am a complete fan boy of this series I decided that I will conduct this review with my first experience of the game when I was a kid and a little criticism from me as I am now. So shall we begin in this epic tale of humans and vampires fighting to exterminate each other in a battle for superiority? Ok lets dive into it. When you first start into the game you will be greeted with an amazing and really well use of the PlayStation's graphic capabilities cut scene which sets the mood for the entire game. Now I don't want to ruin any plot or spoilers such as characters and their development so I will leave these details pretty vague. As the video comes to an end you finally come to actual game play. Now this game is generally a plat former, puzzle mixed with some combat type game though I will admit that your main problem in this game is going to be the camera and sometimes the lighting though that depends on what type of tv you are using. The controls in way feel a little stiff as you are moving around and jumping from platform to platform and the camera angle just really makes it worse though its not that way through the entire game another problem I noticed is that its way too easy to get lost as in there is no map or screen to tell you what your main objectives or mission is so you really need to pay attention in what is going on in this world to actually be able to navigate. And right now as you go through the beginning stage and learn the controls you come to a combat tutorial where you learn how to dispatch your enemies. Since you are fighting vampires and the occasional human you must utilize their weakness such a fire, water, sunlight, and impalement. Another component of this game is that your main character that you play as can only heal by absorbing the souls of the fallen to regenerate himself. Now this component of the game is pretty basic such as even though you can get different weapons your attack combination {combos} are the same. And the battle sequences eventually can get boring or even annoying as you progress cause the game play in itself can be boring but I believe the story is what makes this game I mean its like your reading a book, watching a movie, and playing a game all at once. And that is what this game is all about, the story. Now throughout the game you solve a number of puzzles and fight quite a number of different type of enemies. ( really there are so many different types of enemies in this game and it bosses are amazing, really immerses you into the world and the character). Everything you do in this game and everyone you meet all have their purpose and are explained in detail about their origin and clan. Now I really think this in all this is a game that any gamer who enjoys a good tale with mythos and lore would enjoy heck I have talked with individuals who have not played the game and actually don't game at all enjoy and become fascinated with the story and crave more. So in all I would give this game a 9/10 because it doesn't disappoint in any way even with the few flaws that it does have.
