well for the first time in my pokemon career I'm doing a nuzlocke challenge. for those who don't know, you must follow some pretty cruel rules in a nuzlocke, and once you finish the main story and beat the champion it's over. that is... IF you beat the champion.

the rules are as follows:
first of all...

second is probably the biggest change of pace, if your pokemon faints it must be released I already don't like this at all...
third, the only time you may catch a pokemon is when you first enter a new area, where you can catch only the first pokemon you see. if that pokemon is caught, faints, or the battle is cancelled (like it flees or you run) you cannot capture anything from that area ever again. also no traded pokemon are accepted, but you can receive pokemon from npc's
fourth, even if you have a pokemon in your pc, if your entire party faints and you black out that counts as a game over

now there are many mercy rules you can add to make the challenge easier, like allowing legendaries or shinies to be caught or giving second chances to pokemon who faint, and if you want an even harder challenge you can add rules like limiting uses of pokecenters and pokemarts, but i live by those four rules above.

Rules:


No heart containers, only heart pieces.

You're only allowed to assemble a heart container after beating one of the four dungeons.

You are allowed to assemble one more heart container after completing the ancient castle of Ikana.

Only 2 bottles.

Only one bottle till you get the zora's mask.

No great fairy upgrades outside of the deku bubble ability.

No inverted song of time.

That's all I can think of in the moment.

yeah, hiker kenneth cleaned out 3 of my pokemon upon me leaving union cave (the b****) and left me with my sandshrew. i then caught a paras, lost the second geodude i found in the wild, and i named my new togepi "hope". unfortunately he learned metronome and my hope exploded

I have never heard of that before. It sounds like a little too much for me though. The only kind of odd challenges I do in Pokemon games is I will pick one type at random and only use that type. Some times you luck out and get a good type and sometimes you get stuff like bug. It adds a little challenge to the games.

I love doing Nuzlocke runs on my Pokémon games. It adds a lot of challenge to the games, and makes them way more interesting because you actually start to care for your Pokémon after a while.

Mecha Leo : Don't worry, you can lose to your rival at Oak's Lab and still continue the game. Most people follow a mercy rule which states that the Nuzlocke Challenge starts as soon as you get your first Poké Balls.

I enjoy nuzlocke but I suck at sticking to the rules to much xD also I never knew it was outside of Pokémon I thought nuzlocke was a Pokémon thing only the big issue is I mostly just play Pokémon hacks blind so it makes nuzlocke a lot harder when like everyone Pokémon are 10level higher then your but all the wild Pokémon levels are the same so you can't grind either

I have never tried a Nuzlocke, maybe I will do one for a hack or something on my Youtube channel.

There are many rules that make the challenge either easier or harder, but I think that they can be somewhat flexible. You're probably not trying to prove anything by playing the game that way, so every time you cheat you only truly cheat yourself. That's why I personally have made some borderline "illegal" moves such as
*capturing Pokémon that are not the first of the area as HM-slaves, without intending to ever use them at battles (because I really don't want to give Cut to torchic)
* only considering the first catchable Pokémon of each area one that I haven't got already in the box or in my team
* and yes even continuing the game after Gym-leader wiped my entire team (like hell I was going to start over again from that point).

With that said you shouldn't try to find loopholes in the game because  the point of the challenge is to show how easily a single mistake can destroy something you've put a lot of effort and love into. The challenge really makes you know and trust to your team, so when a Pokémon dies because you tried to push it too far or the enemy got one lucky shot, the game suddenly becomes much more dramatic. The comic that gave the name to the challenge illustrates this rather well.

I think I've only Nuzlocked two pokemon games. Pokemon Red and Crystal.

I messed up on my Crystal Nuzlocke and had to start over again from the very beginning (after completely losing to the 5th gym).
