I have this question to ask What am I fighting for!. Okay not really but if you got the Zero reference than good for you . Okay today I am going to reviewing Mega Man X4 the first game for the PlayStation in the X series released in America around 1998 I believe.

Story: 9
The story in this game is actually good. Some time after the events of X3 apparently it has been years or decades since then. Repliforce is formed to help the Maverick hunters. In fact they are an affiliate of them. Their job is to assists the hunters and to also keep peace. Repliforce is lead by the General and the Colonel as well as several officers. However the Repliforce starts getting very big so big they no longer want to be part of the Hunters anymore. The repliforce wants to be its own organization to also hunt mavericks. The Hunters do not like this and a rift between the two is caused. One night a familiar figure, cough cough Sigma, cough cough visits the General. Sigma tells the General that he needs to become independent. The General throws Sigma out telling him to get lost but Sigma says Repliforce will change its mind. It is revealed later on that Sigma has his spies in both the Hunters and Repliforce. The spies start creating criminal offenses and thus the two sides start blaming each other. Meanwhile, Sigma watches back in delight as a civil war has started and his plan of having the organizations destroy each other is going well. X and Zero set out to discover the truth and to find out has Repliforce really gone bad? Along the way they ask the Colonel to come into the Hunter Base for questioning. Colonel refuses saying Repliforce fights to the death and never surrenders. Thus they are judged as mavericks. General orders his armies to start planning for independence. Now the player can chose to play either as X or Zero. Depending on who you pick opens up sub plots. X's subplot is he questions the colonel, wonders why does this civil war have to happen, he also has to train double a rookie hunter. Can double be trusted or is he working for somebody else? Zero's subplot involves his girlfriend. Zero's girlfriend Iris is a maverick Hunter but her brother happens to be the Colonel. Zero has to eventually fight his friend the Colonel and Iris is torn as she is part of both sides. I really liked this plot. Capcom was really trying something new here. I really like the idea of a civil war. I thought it was creative and nicely done. In addition, I also like the sub plots and how each character has them. The only thing that might have been confusing to some players was this. Sigma is referenced in the cut scenes and mentioned in the manual of pulling the strings. However, X or Zero do not know it is really him till after their battles. I guess Capcom was trying to add suspense here. Still, a very good story line.

Graphics: 10
What can I say the the graphics in this game were perfect. I really like the backgrounds in this stage. The graphics really sine in the Jungle stage. The waterfalls were a nice touch. Also the ice stage looked very cool with the snow falling. The other stages such as the Air Force base was also nicely done. I really liked how the graphics shines in this game. The sprints were also very good. X and Zero have good springs. Zero has better sprints and looks cooler since he uses a Saber to attack. Zero's saber really glows in this game plus later in the game it can be enhanced. They are also not lags in this game either which is great. The controls are smooth no matter which character the player picks. In fact, this game has very similar graphics to X2 and X3 which their graphics were very good. This game has just as good graphics which I would suspect since it is a play station game.

Sound: 9
The sound in this game was pretty good. I really liked the music in this game. Now it was not as good as X2 or X3's but those games are just special. I really like Slash Beast's stage music. Frost Walrus's music was also good. Magma Dragon, and Storm Owl also had good music. In addition the weapons in this game had a good sound that lets the player know they are powerful. Enemy shots are also powerful it lets the player know that the enemies have got it in for you. The bosses have very good attack sounds. One thing that was nice was when your character loses 75% health they will say phrases. X will say its time to get serious. While Zero says it is not over yet. Now, there is a minor problem with the sound in this game. X and Zero often say things when they attack. It sounds like X is saying he and Zero is saying Ha. So sometimes hearing he ha he ha can get annoying. However that is only a minor problem and due to the other sounds it can be drowned out. Thus, I give the sound a good solid rating of 9

Addictiveness and Depth: 9
I really liked this game and I often play it. It was nice to be able to play as Zero throughout the entire game. X3 if you recall Zero could be used but if he got damaged he would be lost and Zero could not fight bosses in that game. Here if you chose Zero you are stuck with him the entire game. I like to play this game through with Zero and then play it again as X. I think getting to see both players sub-plots and story lines adds replay. The depth in this game was also nicely done. The items that are needed to collect varies. Playing as X has more depth for a few reasons. First of all, X can use the light Capsules, get life ups and sub-tanks. Zero on the other hand he can't use the light capsules in this game so they are absent if you chose to play him. Zero though still has the other items to collect. So there is a lot to offer in this game. It probably does not get a 10 like I gave X3 for one reason. X3 had regular light capsules and then you can chose 1 super capsule to equip. So it was fun to play that game through using a different special capsule. X4 did no have that choice so that is what keeps it from being a 10.

Difficulty: 8
The difficulty was hard to rate because it will depend on who you chose. Zero is more difficulty because his weapons are close range so you have to get close to enemies to hit them. He also has to get closer to bosses to do damage. However his saber is very powerful. X is not so bad because he can charge his buster and blast from a distance. Now, overall this game did have some challenges. The enemy placement in this game was a problem sometimes. Enemies just love to swarm you and corner you. Zero does not really have this problem because of his saber. X however does. Also some of the items such as the capsules and power ups require special weapons and creativity to get so that is a challenge. The Mavericks were not that bad there were a few that game me trouble. Storm Owl and Magma Dragon are the hardest ones in this game. The fortress stages were more of a challenge. So while this game gives you ways to get out of jams it can still be difficult. If you play as Zero the difficulty is probably a 9 out of 10 just due to him being a close range fighter. If you play as X the difficulty is a more moderate 6 out of 10. So I think 8 out of 10 is about right for this game.

Overall Rating: 9.1
I got this game when it first came out and I played it a lot. Now is X4 up there with X2 and X3 probably not. Those two games just have a special place among my favorite games and to be honest it would be hard for an X game to topple them two. Still, X4 is a very good game. The graphics are very good and so is the sound. If X4 suffers any it is due to the fact that once you chose a character you are stuck with them. Unlike future X games were you can bring a different character to a different stage. This game if you chose Zero you have to play the entire game as Zero. Now that is not really a bad thing because it bumps up the difficulty and requires skill which I like. I also wish the sound did not have he and ha all the time, that can get a bit old. X4 is unique is because it has a decent plot to it. I guess Capcom wanted to try something new. X4 came out when the play station one was at its peak. The only other game on the play station that was decent like this one was X6. In conclusion, this is a great game. It turned out to be a huge hit for Capcom in 1998 I believe or that is the year I remember seeing it advertised and available in stores. Some experts have said this was one of the last great X games in the series. I kind of disagree with that but oh well that is their opinion. Just like it is my opinion that X6 was a good game. Would I recommend this game. Yes I would highly recommend this game.
