TITLE: J.J. SQUAWKERS SYTEM:MAME REVIEW BY :GOLGO 14

TWENTY,TWENTY FOUR HOURS AGO-O-O SIR ARTHUR LICKED A TOAD
There comes a time in every gamer's life when they come across a game that in some
way or another defies explanation. A game that visually,
if you try to explain all the details at once to your friends they reply like a deer in headlights with responses like "Huh?" or"Say that again?". After much thought and epic meditation I have concluded that the easiest way to explain the experience that is JJ Squawkers is this...Ghosts n Goblins meets Woodstock 1979 (minus any flaming guitars).

GRAPHICS: 9/10 From a pure visual standpoint, JJ Squawkers is kaleidoscope of colors and surrealistic dreamscape imagery. You will be surprised what these artists have in store for you .In fact, the visual design is such a compelling reason to plow through this title that you might miss all the little details like one of my favorite weapons of all time..a deadly slinky shot with sticky red shoes that zips across any solid surface to dispatch enemies..EVERYONE LOVES A SLINKY!! What keeps the graphics from getting a perfect score is that even though the artwork and enemies are beautifully realized it's the main protagonist himself that seems..well uninspired.I mean JJ is simply a green bird with not much personality at all. There are no "close to an edge" flailing animations that helped shape personalities like Sonic the Hedgehog which in my opinion JJ badly needs to add that special something to make him a compelling hero. Regardless, JJ Squawkers remains a visual delight.

SOUND/MUSIC: 8/10 The music and sound effects have an experimental vibe happening and really add to the surrealistic nature of the graphic design. From tracks that sound like there are tiny birds trying to harmonize with the bass to almost trance like slower meditative tracks that when coupled with the more intense boss music help bring a generous variety of listening pleasure to the player. The sound effects themselves are excellent and help bring some of the enemies to life, like when enemies take a run at you but go to far and need to slam on the brakes making that noise a car makes when you do the same, to shreaking giant suger cubes that get really furious when pounced upon , the sound effects are both funny and weird and I like that very much!

ADDICTIVENESS: 7/10 JJ Squawkers is a side scrolling action platformer that feels alot like playing Sir Arthur in Ghosts and Goblins. For example when you throw pumpkins it feels like when Arthur throws his fireballs and the same goes for another type of lazer shot that feels just like Arthur throwing his daggers. The feel of this title is very well executed and offers tight, responsive accurate control for the player. The Bosses all have a fun attack pattern that is really fun to figure out and some of the stage design exhibits some interesting traps to escape from which leads me to the main problem. The level design itself unlike the audio/visuals and excellent control are much like the main man JJ himself..rather uninspired. There is nothing broken or particularly wrong about what is offered here..it's just that there isn't anything you haven't played through before. To me if the designers put the same amount of creativity into the design and layout of the stages as they did with the art I would have nothing much to complain about. You see Ghost and Goblins or any great action platformer game succeeds not only because the graphics are excellent but because the level designs have a very distinct way of making each stage come alive with their own identity by offering a variety of new challenges to stump the player. JJ Squawkers simply does not. I know I'm coming down pretty hard but I just can't stand wasted potential. As it is though , JJ Squawkers IS FUN TO PLAY and a very good playing experience.(add a .5 to my score if you choose to add a second player to the mix).

CHALLENGE/DEPTH: UNLIMITED CONTINUES 0/10 Playing with 3 continues 7/10

You really have to play the majority of the MAME arcade titles with limited continues in order to appreciate any sort of challenge. I always settle for about 3.This title offers about 5 stages that overall can be completed in about 20 min(if you don't die).I had a very good time challenging myself to figure out the fun Boss battles, and would recommend intermediate players to do the same. The game does have a small fun selection of attacks that feel great to use(SLINKY!!)and figuring out which one works the best is as deep as this title gets.Because of it's deliberate arcade roots I'm willing to forgive its brevity.
CONCLUSION: JJ Squawkers is certainly a very good game with outstanding graphics that by themselves as mentioned earlier are reason enough to playthrough this weird obscure platformer and even more fun with a friend. It doesn't quite meet the potential to define it as a classic action platformer but boy the sights you see here will make you wonder if you did in fact grab a hand and go on a magic carpet ride!!
