Mega Man is back to save the world from Mavericks. Here is my take and review on Mega Man X6 so here we go.

Story: 6
The story is revealed reading the manual and the intro. It has been 3 weeks since the events of Mega Man X5. X and Zero saved the earth, defeated Sigma but only one of them returned (X). Gate who is a scientists with good intentions emerges to lead a team of reploids to repair the Earth. Gate comes to the wreckage of what appears to be Sigma's lab. He often wonders what happened was there a battle here? He makes the statement we can have no more sacrifices. However, Gate picks up either a piece of Sigma or something. Gate gets infected with the Sigma virus and becomes evil. He creates a nightmare ghost version of Zero. Uses his top researcher Isoc to lead other reploids into a trap. Gate has also resurrected 8 of his past reploids that were killed in the past. Okay you have that plot but then you get another plot if you find Zero. Yes Zero is playable in this game you just have to find him. I will not tell you how to find and unlock Zero because that would be spoiling. So here is the plot if you find Zero. Mega Man X is sent out to put an end to the nightmare and to bring Gate to justice. But not alone, X finds that Zero did not die, he hid and repaired himself. Isoc tells reploids to join them or they risk of being deleted by Gate. The reploids go to work for Gate and then end up getting in trouble due to the nightmare threat. Zero joins X and the two set off to end the nightmare. However, they find that Gate is being manipulated by Sigma. X and Zero must put an end to the nightmare, rescue reploids, bring gate to justice and defeat Sigma. They also discover that the nightmare deletes reploids similar to what happened years ago. Okay anybody confused yet? The plot did have some potential it adds suspense and mystery to the story. Now for my critique of the story. Seriously Capcom what were you thinking and Doing? This plot was so confusing that it turned a lot of people off from this would be great game. It seems like Capcom tried to make two plots into one. Not to mention this is the only X game that does not match the plot in the manual. The manual says it has been 3 years since the events of X5 but the intro to the game says 3 weeks. This tells me Capcom was really rushing this game. Here is how the Plot should have been to make this a good game. X finds out that Zero did not die and is reunited with his comrade. The two discover a new threat. Gate who was once a good scientists with good intentions, starts to investigate the battle scene. Gate finds a piece of debris with the Sigma Virus. The Sigma Virus consumes Gate. Gate thus causes the return of Sigma. Sigma than manipulates Gate into creating a ghost of Zero and the nightmare incident to lure reploids into getting possessed. Now that plot, would have been really good and would be more in line with other X plots. I do not know why we got what we got and what Capcom was thinking. Thus I give the plot of this game a 6 out of 10 and that is being gracious. The only thing that keeps it from getting a low rating is the suspense and drama.

Graphics: 8
The Graphics in this game was pretty good I thought. I really liked how the backgrounds have color to them. The stages change due to the nightmare. Some stages have rain, fireballs, large snow balls, metal plates, and the lights going out in them depending on the nightmare effect. Capcom really did good changing the stages like that. I really like how some of the stages sparkle and shine. The sprints in this game were also nicely done. X and Zero have their awesome sprints. But enemies also have their awesome sprints as well. The game does have some lags though. However, I did not notice the lags until the fortress stages, again this game was probably rushed. The controls vary and this is were the rating suffers just a bit. X's controls are very nice and smooth. But Zero he sometimes appears to be sluggish. In the past X games Zero was known for having very good controls that were smooth, but in this game he appears to be sluggish at times. So yeah, Zero being sluggish keeps this rating from being a 9 or a 10. Still, at the end of the day I give the graphics of this game a good rating of 8.

Sound: 9
The sound in this game is what makes X6 shine. This game had some good themed music. The Blizzard Stage and the Rain stage were my favorites in this game. I even liked the Museum stage. I found a lot of the stages had an upbeat tempo which was really nice.Gates Fortress and even sigma's stage had good music. X and Zero also have good sounds especially since both are using a saber in this game. They way the sound when they are fighting enemies makes them sound like they are serious. I also like the sound the enemies make, the way they fire their lasers was a nice touch. Moreover, there are no tingles in this game so that is a big plus for me. I do not like tingles at all. However, there is one annoying sound in this game and that is what keeps it from getting a perfect score. Every time X or Zero get hit they scream ow so many times its like they are in pain. Seriously Capcom did you have to make the two great hunters scream ow every time they get hit. I could understand X or Zero saying ow when they are about to lose all their health bars. But hearing ow every hit does get a little bit annoying. Therefore, that keeps the rating down from being a perfect 10.

Addictivenss: 7
Despite the flaws in the plot I really like this game. I do often play this game quite a bit despite the flaws as crazy as that may seem. No with that being said is this game up there with X2 and X3 no. X2 and X3 have a special place with me because those are my two favorite X games. Not to mention they were also big hits selling several copies. X6 is a good game so I do play it again but I think it has too many flaws to be in the league with X2 or X3. Still, I give this game a decent rating because It is fun to play and I do play it quite a bit, just not as much as the second and third game in the X series.

Depth: 8
Okay X6 had some depth to it and that is why I also like to play this game. The first thing that adds depth is you can find Zero. Finding Zero is pretty easy in this game. Second they are lots of reploids to rescue in the stages. When the player rescues one, the reploids can extend your health bar, give you extra lives, and even give you parts to enhance your attacks. In addition, you also have items to collect such as extra points on the health bar, parts and Dr. Light enhancements. This game gives you two armors to find in this game. Players if they enter a code can get the 3rd armor in this game. For X you have the blade armor and then the shadow armor parts to find. Every stage has at least one part. 4 stages with have the blade parts the other 4 have the shadow part. You can also collect souls. Okay collecting souls is a little creepy. But, if you destroy enough of the nightmare enemies you can collect their souls. The souls also improve your power, yeah creepy I know. So X6 had a lot to offer in this game. So you may be wondering why did I not give this a perfect 10 here is the thing. They make finding zero so easy in this game so why it is part of the mission the makers of this game are handing it to you to find him. Also some of the items are in plain sight. So those two things is what kept me from giving this a solid score.

Difficulty: 10
Another part were this game shines is the difficulty. I have played the first game through the 6th and I have even played the eighth some. Of all the X games I have played this one is the hardest. In fact, this game is so difficulty that some players were turned off from this game because of its difficulty. I even remember seeing this game compared to Battletoads in difficulty yeah that says a lot. The enemy placement in this game can be a nightmare. It is so easy to have enemies surround you and just wear you down. In addition, some of the special weapons, buster or even the saber do not have an effect on them. While playing this game so many times I died just due to getting surrounded. Also the enemies in this game hurt more than they do in other X games and their attacks are more powerful. Another thing that adds the difficulty is you have to rescue all the reploids. If a reploid gets possessed with a nightmare than that reploid is considered to have been killed. Some players including myself are irritated with that. You also have to rescue pretty much all of them to get all the power ups in this game. The maverick bosses in this game were pretty tricky to beat mainly because of their powerful attacks. But a lot of them are really fast. Some of the mavericks have small hit boxes as well. The fortress stages are a pain to get through so when you go through them be sure you have extra lives. Item collection can be a pain in this game at times. Some of the items are in plain sight but others are not. Some of the items have to require nightmare effects to get, special skills, special weapons and enhancements to get. It should be noted you may lose a live while getting them because you guessed it Capcom put death spikes around some of them. So yeah this was a very hard game. I like difficult games but sometimes this just gets irritating. X6 really test the players skill, creativity and most of all a lot of luck to beat this game.

Overall: 8.9
Mega Man X6 has its flaws but it is still a good game. However, this game could have been a huge seller and been up there with X1-X4 in terms of sells had it not been for the flaws. This game came out I think in late 2001. The original play station was at its peak and being replaced with the Play Station 2 counsel. I really feel like Capcom rushed this game. The plot is so confusing that a lot of players were turned off. I will be honest having two plots under one plot is not only confusing but it kind of ruins the story. It could be though that Keiji Inafune, who was the director and creator of all the Mega Man games, did not know this game was released or being made. Capcom made this game without him even knowing it till it was put out on the market. I think that might have do with some of the flaws in this game. The graphics were mostly good in this game accept for the controls. I know a lot of people do not like this game, but I enjoyed it. It is probably my 3rd or 4th favorite game in the X series. But enough about the negatives I'm going to be talking about the positives. This game tried to offer something new by having a nightmare effect instead of just having Sigma try to take over the world. Sigma is doing that in this game but its not stated the first time till you find Zero. The game had an awesome soundtrack as well as awesome backgrounds. In addition, this game had a lot of depth to it which I really like. I also like the difficulty in this game. I love games that challenge the player. Now would I recommend this game despite its flaws. Yes I would recommend this game. Again it is not up there with X2 or X3 in my opinion just has a few flaws. But, this is still a good game and it is fun to play. So yeah I would recommend this game. I give this game a decent rating of 8.9

Good review.  The Mega Man X series always were pretty good.  I don't remember X6 all that well though so sometime I might have to play it again.
