Kirby's Dreamland was the first Kirby game to hit the market. The game was released in 1992 or 1993 for Game Boy. Here is my take and review on Kirby's first game.

Story: 5
The story in Kirby's Dreamland was hilarious and kind of lame for a plot at the same time. King Dedede, king of Dreamland or so he thinks, wants to have a midnight snack. The king steals I kid you not all the food from the citizens of Dreamland. Kirby a resident decides he will go retrieve the food and save the day. Okay this is were the plot kind of gets lame. The main bad guy in this game steals food. Really, does a plot to the first Kirby game have to be this lame. Most villains in games try to take over the world such as Dr. Wily or Sigma do in the Mega Man games. Other games like Mario Bowser kidnaps Peach to hold her as a ransom while he takes over the Mushroom Kingdom. Even King Rool in the Donkey Kong games steals food but he does it to torture the Kongs and he wants to take over Donkey Kong Island. Here the main bad guy steals food. What was Hal Labs thinking by having the bad guy steal food just so he can have his midnight snack. This is why I think the plot suffers it does not have creativity. Hall could have had King Dedede not only still the food but try to take over Dreamland or something else. I gave the plot a middle rating because it is kind of funny that the main villain is stealing food to get his snack. Hey gotta have that midnight snack.

Graphics: 6
Okay the Graphics in this game were decent considering it is a Game Boy game. Some of the backgrounds do sparkle which is very nice. The stars in the backgrounds also shows that this game had potential. However, sometimes the graphics just seem to lag at times. The sprints were not the best in this game. The sprints of the enemies at times looked like they were out of whack. They were not as clear as they were in Kirby's Adventure or future Kirby Games. I do not know if that is because this was a Game Boy game or if the game was rushed. Also I noticed that sometimes it seemed like there was lagging in the game. I  noticed a few lags in the boss battles and some of the stages had a lag. The controls in this game were eh not the greatest but not as bad. Sometimes Kirby seems a sluggish especially in boss fights or during long levels. Other times the controls feel okay. I was kind of disappointed in the Graphics. I did not expect the graphics to blow me away but I was not expecting them to be flawed either. I have played game boy games that had very good graphics. So I was hoping this game would be well rounded but it was not I hate to say.  The background of the stages is what keeps this rating a middle of the road ratting. I really wanted to rate this game higher. In summary, the graphics were not horrible but not sharp or real good either.

Sound. 7
The sounds of this game were overall decent though they did have their problems. I really liked the beach theme and the garden theme in this game those were very nice. They also fit the worlds theme very nicely. Another good sound is when Kirby gets a power up and the tempo of the music speeds up that was a nice touch. I also think the sound when Kirby dies is funny. In fact, the sound of Kirby dying has become a staple in future Kirby games. However, the sounds of this game do have their problems. Sometimes it seems like other world's themes in this game tingle. Moreover, it sounds like sometimes the tempo gets out of rhythm too. The later worlds and the boss battles had this problem.  For some people tingling and out of rhythm do not bother people when it comes to music or sound. However I do not like tingling and I like music to have good rhythm to it. Also when Kirby gets hit by an enemy that sounds short of scratchy. I remember playing Kirby's Adventure and whenever Kirby got hit it was smooth. This game not so much. I do not know if this game was just rushed. I do not think it is because of the Game Boy I have played very good games on that system and the sounds were very good. In conclusion, I give the sound of this game a decent rating. The beach and garden world's theme in this game as well as Kirby's death sound really bump the rating up. The issues, the tingling, scratchiness, and out of rhythm tempo is what keeps this rating from being higher.

Addictiveness: 5
The replay value of this game is not as good as other Kirby games. Kirby's Adventure, Kirby's Dreamland 2, Dreamland 3, and the Amazing Mirror all had high replay value. Compared to them I find myself playing this one the least. The other Kirby games are so much better and more fun to play. A few times I have gone back to this one simply because it was the first game. Moreover, it is nice to see were the whole series started. On the other hand, this game was not as fun compared to the others. I kind of had the feeling after I beat this one I wanted to go play the other Kirby games. So It was hard for me to rate this but I think a middle of the rating is about right.

Depth: 5
Here again is were Kirby's Dreamland suffers. The depth in this game was kind of low. The worlds are not that very long so its a short game to play through. There are no power ups in this game the player can take from enemies. The other Kirby games had a lot of special powers. Another thing is the worlds are not broken into stages and as stated they are very short. I was hoping this game would have been like the other Kirby games. When I first played this game I thought it would be like Kirby's adventure have lots of weapons and lots of stages. I was once again disappointed. Now, with the negatives being said time for a few positives. This game does have items to collect so that kind of helps the rating out a bit. So I give the depth of this game a middle rating.

Difficulty: 8
Kirby's dreamland really shines on how difficult the game is. Unlike other Kirby games now special powers are gained from eating enemies. That lack of ability makes fighting the bosses a pain. In future Kirby games they were hard but since you could have a special power you at least had a chance. Not in this game, it is so easy to get killed in the boss fights. The bosses have special abilities but Kirby does not. Also another thing that makes this game tough to beat is the enemy placement. A lot of times enemies hit sneak up on you hitting you behind. Other times enemies will gang up on you thus draining your health. Also, it is bad for enemies to drop down out of the sky without warning. Also the power ups they give you in this game do not last long. I remember dying quite a bit in this game especially when fighting the bosses. I like games that challenge your skill to beat. But this one does that but it is aggravating at the same time. So, Hal Labs made sure you would have a hard time beating this game.

Overall: 6.2
Okay here is the deal. I got this game at a discount long after it had come out. I had played the other Kirby games before I played this one. I was hoping this game would be like them. I didn't expect it to be sharp for one reason. The reason being first games in a series can be out of whack or really good. Mega Man one was a game that was out of whack but it was the first game. Mario Brothers one had its flaws. Then there are games like Donkey Kong Country that are very good. I was hoping this game would be good. This game does have some good points to it. The difficulty is good and part of the graphics are good. However, this game was flawed quite a bit. I am not saying this is a horrible game because it is not. On the other hand it is not a super good game either. I find this game to be Mediocre at best. It is nice to play this game just to see how far Kirby games have come. But as far as recommending this game its iffy. If you want a game to learn how Kirby works, and the special weapons. Than go play Kirby's Adventure as that game had very good controls and all the special weapons that have become staples in the series. If you want to just see how far the games have come than play this game. I play it a few times. But in conclusion I would recommend Kirby's Adventure over this one. Thankfully, Hall Labs learned from this game and made improvements in future games.

tornadocam : Wow, I completely agree with you! The game is really difficult, but not as addicting as the other games. But it's a good game even though the successors were much better.

The first Kirby game had some great qualities, but obviously the newer ones are better. If I ever have time to kill I play this.
