Title:Outlast System: PS4 Review by: Golgo 14                                                                                                                                                                      THE MOST TERRIFYING GAME EVER MADE
Fear is internal and external. It is a force that can bring us together or divide us.It is one of the many things that makes us human.
As filmmakers endlessly over saturate the market with cheap gore-fests and found footage type films and reboots of super unscary relics of the past, game designers I feel, have a more difficult task at hand when attempting to be successful in this regard but when are successful, the effect cannot be matched by a film.A film is roughly 90 min where a game can take hour upon hours so when designing a successful horror game, there has to be a greater understanding of how to manipulate you in being scared for a longer period because of player interaction that has to be integrated seamlessly into the scares, where in a film the person is idle and I feel the filmmaker has less to worry about when designing scares. Since the inception of what I consider to be the grand daddy of horror games, Clock Tower, the only games that have truly scared me were Resident Evil and Silent Hill 1&2, and both series scared me in 2 different ways. To me, Resident Evil goes for the more obvious, classic jump scares where Silent Hill is more of a slow burn psychological horror. Both to me have been highly effective and share one thing in common when begging for you're screams..atmosphere.For Resident Evil the scares come from what you suddenly see where Silent Hill the scares come from what you don't see.I love them both so much and it was sad to see both series eventually go down the wrong path(more so Resident Evil as Silent Hill wisely chose not to stray too far from it's proven formula). It brings me great pleasure to report a horror game that to me combines BOTH of the type of terror that made those classics..well classics and takes it to the next level..prepare yourself for an unrivaled experience that will consume you ..Outlast.

STORY: 7 You play as a reporter Miles Upshur investigating an Asylum that shall we say, practiced psychiatric treatment in a slightly unorthodox way. Then he gets trapped and has to find a way out.The story will vary from player to player depending if they decide to grab all of the hidden messages in the form of patient documents etc. or if you happen to find anyone still alive that might tell you something regarding the story. To me, this is the only element of this game that cannot match the gravity of Silent Hill's stories in part 1 and 2 and it doesn't have to because this entire game is reliant on scaring you with the moment to moment game play. The story is creepy as heck and does add to the overall experience but it is really how the programmers designed the scares though the game play that what makes the experience terrifying.

GAMEPLAY: 10 Survival horror was to me,was defined in Resident Evil by managing you're health and ammo and surviving the many traps and monstrosities that were set up for you. Silent Hill defined it's take on survival horror by making the player less combat effective when in danger, making the player feel under powered and really sold the experience of playing an ordinary hero.In Outlast you are simply ALWAYS helpless which is truly an element to the game that shines and realizing this is what helps define the survival horror element in Outlast, the designers prey on this concept and succeed. First of all you have no weapons or form of attack, just you're trusty camcorder, two feet and a heartbeat. In order to escape the Asylum you really have to pay attention to you're surroundings and plan every step like it's you're last. The feeling that you are always being watched or hunted or one slight misstep can spell doom is what drives the fear into the player. The enemy encounters within the Asylum are all nightmare inducing abominations that in some instances to me, feel like the Nemesis encounters which were the true highlights of the 3rd Resident Evil game.To suddenly have one of these beasts tear down a door right in front of you installs that jump scare and adrenaline kick that Nemesis provided the player with but takes it one step further. You see,you could always run and eventually escape the Nemesis where in Outlast, you also have to high tail it outta there but instead of the chance of running through to the next screen to escape or firing a rocket the only option at most times is to hide.I love this because this design choice keeps you feeling helpless but more importantly you feel trapped, alone and terrified. Before you enter a room in Outlast you have the option to slowly open a door to peek what lies behind( which by the way.. will scare you at least twice!)or open it quickly to hide from an oncoming attacker which to me is a genius mechanic and NEEDS to be in every true horror game. Finally, you have you're camera which has a night vision feature that is the only means of navigation when the lights go out and is the final game play element that successfully helps binds this horror masterpiece. There's nothing like being chased, hiding under a bed then suddenly nothing..then the lights go out and when you're camera is on night vision it cuts you're line of sight in half where you can only barely see just a few feet in front of you.My hats off to the team for making me feel like the prey so effectively within the game play mechanics.

GRAPHICS: 9 The graphics, art direction and environmental effects are sublime. The engine powering this beast runs at a silky smooth 60fps that push the ferocious enemies and dimly lit hallways at you with ease. Each room has a great variety of detail and by looking around at everything you feel more and more aware that something went terribly wrong here. The use of light on shadow effects really help build the atmosphere similar to Silent Hill where the atmosphere is founded on a lot of what you can barely see, leaving the scariest images for you're own imagination to decipher which is BRILLIANT! This leads to the last element that takes Outlast over the top...

SOUND: 10 Without a doubt the audio in Outlast completes the overall experience and really pushes the concept mentioned above where the fear that lies in Silent Hill comes a lot from what you don't see. It's what you hear that helps create the psychological terror in Outlast.Insane laughter, thunderous bassy growls and cries of tortured souls await you inside the darkness. The creak of a door as you slowly open a door to the wet sound coming from you're shoes as you walk through puddles of blood go hand in hand with not only the Resident Evil type jump scares but also the psychological scares you get from Silent Hill. The way you can hear you're character pant and catch his breath is also a nice touch and adds a sense of tension to the game.

CONCLUSION: Outlast takes the scares that made other survival horror games and creates it's own unique vision of what a survival horror game should be.It doesn't last too long(5 hours or so) but it will and should scare everyone in some way or another but most importantly I was always having FUN while being scared out of my mind and to me coming from a game that is really quite special.
