Hi, this is 9-Volt reviewing Domino Man. For a long time, I always wanted to review Domino Man. In fact, it was the first game I started reviewing. Unfortunately, I never got around to finishing it. I'd only done the intro (what you're reading right now) and the 'Graphics' section. Well, one day I started to start over with the review and this time, finish it. So here we go, this is 9-Volt reviewing Domino Man! See my review of Super Mario Bros. (TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine pirate) for my ratings scale.

Graphics: 10
Like I've said before, I don't like to rate things a 10 (it looks like an exaggeration every time), but here, what else can I do? An 11? The ingenious Bally Midway MCR II hardware allows for detailed, colorful,
big sprites. For whatever reason, the backgrounds and sprites are drawn on a 4:1 scale, making the background look pixelly when played in an emulator. I don't count that as a flaw, however; not only does it look cool, but on the CRT monitors this game was built for, you probably can't tell. Anyway, this game takes full advantage of the MCR II and draws cartoony, recognizable, wacky characters and objects that are easily distinguished. They even have the time for black outlines! The backgrounds also look nice and detailed.

Conclusion: Graphics are colorful and recognizable and take full advantage of the game's advanced hardware.

Sound: 10
Again, I hate giving things a 10 (
especially for more than one thing), but also again, it's too good for a 9. Gameplay features a delightful 8-bit rendition of 'Maple Leaf Rag' (slightly off-topic trivia: the Maple Leaf Rag is now one of my favorite songs of all time, but I never would have known it if not for playing Domino Man). Sound effects are fitting and remind me of cartoons a bit, like the graphics. The bully steps with a THUD, the bee is whacked with a whoosh (which is because you attack it by swinging a domino at it), and dominoes are set up with this noise that you can't really write down, but trust me, it fits. One thing you may point out as a flaw: when the time is almost up (a little clock guy walks around the edge of the field and when time is up, he arrives at the first domino and walks into it, thus knocking it down and losing you a life), the audio tracks in the music will get out of sync. However, this should alert a player to the fact that something's up, so the person will look around and notice that the clock guy is almost to his destination. In fact, that may be on purpose in that case. Also, to top it all off, the stinger from the end of the Maple Leaf Rag plays during the game over poem.

Conclusion: Sound is beautiful. Soundtrack is taken from the Maple Leaf Rag. Effects sound fitting.

Addictiveness: 7
Domino Man is one of those games that I regard as my ultra-favorites to revisit often along with Metro Cross, Wonder Momo, Tapper, and other games made mostly by Midway and Namco. So, it's always a nominee to play again when visiting the RGR. As for in-game addictiveness: I'll usually play it a few times, then maybe eventually get bored.

Conclusion: Type 1 addictiveness lands it in high territory. Type 2 is a little lower.

Story: 5
Basically, the classic story of a guy with lots of time on his hands trying to set up the world's longest domino chain. While this story is a little boring, it's very realistic.

Conclusion: A shallow story, but nevertheless an OK one.

Depth: 7
There are many varying patterns of domino chain throughout the levels for you to set up. I've only played though the first 5 levels, but I can honestly say I've never gotten the same pattern twice in the same game. Also, depending on exactly how many dominoes you put up, a little poem is shown about your game. There are around 24 possible poems in all. I think I'd like to try taking screenshots of them all, but they go up to 1,000+ dominoes, and I don't think I can do that.

Conclusion: Features varying domino patterns and end poems.

Difficulty: For me, it's a 7
I rate a lot of things 7, it's weird. Anyway, as usual, difficulty varies by the person, but for me this game is in the hard zone. It's not the controls or anything; it's all legitimate difficulty. (Embarrassingly, I couldn't get past the third stage to reach the first intermission [between sets of stages, a little movie plays, like in Pac-Man] while recording a video. I wanted to get all the footage I could, including the intermission, but I also didn't want to record a whole new video, so I stuck with it and uploaded.) I think it's the amount of things that can do you in. There are multiple doofuses walking around like they don't care about your world record, endangering your dominoes. When someone walks into a domino, it'll fall down and start knocking over your whole chain, losing you a life if it reaches the first domino. Worse, there's a huge bully who will walk down the screen and just stomp through your chain! At least you can push away the normal walkers, but with this guy, all you can do is whack his pants down with a domino, embarrassing him and temporarily distracting him. Luckily, he doesn't appear often, and you can take some dominoes out of his line of destruction by walking over them while holding the 'swat' button. In addition to these hazards, you're on a time limit, as I explained before, and you have this killer bee that will follow you and try to kill you. You get rid of the killer bee by swatting it. Sorry to get all sidetracked there, but I need to explain exactly what makes this game hard.

Conclusion: The game's only difficulty is real difficulty, no controls problems or anything. It's still hard to me because of the many, many ways you can lose a life.

Conclusion: 9.2
"Domino Man. A classic, yet often overlooked, arcade game. It takes the old concept of setting up the longest domino chain in the world (You know you want to!) and puts a strange but enjoyable twist on it." - The intro to my first draft of this review
This game has its flaws, but overall Domino Man is something to really enjoy. 9-Volt (Review Mode) out.
