Hi all!
The name's Shell Master Tortwag, nice to talk to you!
I didn't find any fitting place to post this thread, so I guess going into a general sub-forum about Internet works. I'm basically going to do a series of reviews about what I find on the net, but I will specialize myself in roms, animations (sprite animations or not), Flash games and fan games. I hope it'll be entertaining enough for you all. Let's get started !
The first review I'd like to make is about a pretty good fan game called Megaman Battle Network Chrono X.

Plot:
The year is 20XX. It's been a year since the Cybeasts threatened the peace of the world. Lan Hikari and his friends think life couldn't be better, living in a quiet, peaceful net society. But deep inside, Lan wants to continue his life full of adventures, when he was still fighting against net criminals. His wish would soon be granted: indeed, a dark and new evil secret organization was about to threaten the earth...

Many years ago, a beast was unleashed upon the Net. Sci Lab created a powerful program to subdue the beast, but it swallowed up their weapon before it could take effect. This program was named "Program Z". The monster went out of control, destroying everything that stood in its way. The Net Society was in peril, until a pure hearted duo rose to save the day. This duo was none other than Lan and Megaman.
But now, a mysterious organization wants to resurrect the beast with the remains of the Z Program. What are they up to?...

Gameplay:

As usual a little battle against Gutsman to show him who's the boss...

For those who are not familiar with the Megaman Battle Network series, it is an alternate timeline of the Megaman classic series were net has become part of every single piece of electronic device, from a T.V. to an oven. Humans are using Net Navigators A.K.A. NetNavis (personal and totally customizable programs) for many activities. Most of the time, children like Lan Hikari (main character of the series) use them in order to battle and show their skills to the others, in some sort of organized and friendly game. However the navis can also be used for bad purposes, such as controlling virus to wreck havoc in a city, hijack a bank computer to make money, etc.

Now let's put away the details and enter in the subject. Megaman Battle Network Chrono X is supposed to be the 7th installment of the Battle Network series (who had 6 games). The gameplay created by MDProductions is EXACTLY SIMILAR to the official gameplay and mechanics, which means that those who played the game before won't be disappointed by some weird new features concerning the overall feeling of the game.

Game System:
 uhh...Help?

Select a bunch of battlechips, use them, wait until the Custom Bar is fully loaded, select again, continue battling,... You know how it works after 6 games. MDProductions are perfectly aware of that fact though, which is why they also upgrated the difficulty. Beware! And there's more: a new system totally custom-made makes its appearance.

Yup. Megaman got himself some new forms!

This is the Merging n' Modify Enbodyment Navi-Transform Operation, A.K.A. The Me.M.E.N.T.O. System. This new ability allows Megaman to harvest some of the abilities and features of other Navis through the power of the mysterious X Program. Reaching back to friends and enemies from the past and present, Megaman will grow stronger and stronger on his journey. We still don't know however what relation has this X program with the Z one, or even Red Infinity (the mysterious organization). Find it out while playing, but keep in mind that this is only a demo!

NOTE: your save state will still count when the demo updates, which means that you won't lose your datas when playing a better demo.

Personal Observations:

When MDProductions said that they were going to upgrate the difficulty, they were tremendously serious. From Gutsman to the final boss of the demo the dungeons and enemies are all very challenging, and I had a great time wandering around with Megaman.exe while busting everything in my way. One of the most surprising battle I had (and the most thrilling to me) was against this guy...

Though situation here...

The Heel Navi has the ability to summon virus, use a long sword and teleport quickly. Quite basic battle pattern, and he's really not that hard to fight against. However he appears at the beginning of the game along with an awesome and intense custom-made boss music. Having played only 2 of the 6 Battle Networks, this was a real challenge to me and I acutally almost died in the in this fight. Being used to Roms and Emulators, I sometimes forget how exciting a difficult situation can be when both you and your opponent have low HP, struggling to survive and find an effective strategy to finish the battle without any quicksave to restart at the exact point you were before dying.
We had both 30 HP or so until I finally took a regular sword, waited for him to attack me and finished the job Had I missed the strike I would've lost the battle, since he tried to hit me with a sword as well. One more epic video game moment to add in my collection

Personal Score:
Here I'm going to use the usual Vizzed ratings, as if this was an actual game in the RGR room. Let's get to it then!

Story: 8/10
A generous 8 for this part. I found this story really fitting with the overall style of the Battle Network series, with another evil organization, custom-made navis, and some mysterious characters as well. I can't wait to play the next chapter of the demo and dive deeper into it

Depth: 6.5/10
For a demo, the game is pretty deep. We already have lots of story development, but I can't go over 6.5. After all, the game is not complete yet.

Graphics: 10/10
10 out of 10, simply because the custom features from backgrounds and large elements to sprites and custom navis are perfect. And by perfect I mean that if I had told you that Megaman Battle Network Chrono X was made by Capcom, you would've believed me, because everything in terms of graphics is similar to what Capcom would've done for a brand new Battle Network game.

Sound: 10/10
Pretty much for the same reasons. All the music here are custom-made, and there is ONE in particular that I enjoy, and that is Battle Vigor, the boss theme. This is the theme that kept me thrilled during the entire adventure (I was literally searching for it and overjoyed each time I had to confront a new boss), and I am sure that you would enjoy it as well. And if you don't believe me...

Then feast your ears! And don't forget to imagine that this theme plays every single time you're against a tough boss.

Addictiveness: 8/10
As I already said, this game is immensely deep for a demo, and what's more impressive is how professional it looks for a fangame. That adds to the addictive feeling, as well as the few side quests alongside the main story parts (not to mention the Heel Navi that can be fought in said side quest).

Overall: ~7.5
The demo perfectly introduces the potential of the project, and how thrilling it's going to be. They also put some nice references to other Megaman fanchices, like Battle Network likes to do.

Don't tell me you can't recognize her! Hint: her name starts with C

In any case folks, it is time for me to say goodbye! I hope you enjoyed this review, and I really hope you'll enjoy the demo as much as I did. But now I have to go, as I have lots of things to do... And a heavy shell on my back!
