Well, here's something that surprised me when I saw it on Vizzed, a Super Metroid Christmas hack. I just skipped over it at first, but then I decided that since Christmas is coming closer, I should start doing a few Christmas game reviews to help me get into the spirit. This is my first of them, Metroid Wet Winter. Luckily it didn't take very long to finish it, so it was pretty easy for me to start this review. Anyway, hope you all enjoy my first Christmas hack review of the month.

Graphics: The
graphics actually look pretty nice, which is to be expected if you played Super Metroid in the first place. They didn't change much, just using different layouts of areas. I still was happy to see the game looked this nice, with the winter area the game takes place in being used relatively well. The ice graphics and snowy backgrounds are actually pretty visually pleasing. Though don't expect much variety in these graphics. Except for the second part of the game, which is mostly cavernous, the generic snowy forest in the background is all you'll be seeing there. The caves look nice themselves, but are just that really. Luckily the hack keeps all of Samus' animations, so she still moves pretty well. Ridley even seems the way he used to be, so there wasn't too much harmful tinkering in some places. The graphics get an eight out of ten, for bringing over the nice visuals of Super Metroid and animations, plus the enemies that still look great. The lack of variety doesn't get much a chance to become boring due to the hack's short length.

Story:
The only thing I can really say about the story is that it's Christmas themed. It starts with Samus saying MBD left her a Christmas present at the research station with the baby Metroid. So she goes there and the game continues exactly the same way as the original Super Metroid. Ridley takes the baby and Samus heads down to Zebes after him. There's not really much to speak about with the story except there seems to be a bunch of Kirby-like creatures inhabiting Zebes now.. They mostly serve as small Easter eggs when you find some. Though really, the story isn't the main reason to play this game. I gave it a two, as it's not very important, plus the baby Metroid is taken by Ridley at the beginning, and yet this is never really expanded on.

Sound: Well, the sound is pretty good for what tracks it has, but don't expect to be very impressed by it. You see, the game did bring over all of Samus' attack sounds and the noises all the weapons make are still just as good as in Super Metroid. The only problem is that the only tracks that were brought was the droning overworld music, plus the boss/escape from explosion music. This means you'll barely be listening to anything other than these two. These tracks certainly aren't bad, but they're not exactly something you can just listen to for hours and love every moment of it. Luckily, all the attack sounds from Samus' and the enemies are intact, so you still get Ridley's roar and the nice explosion of missiles. Plus, the sound also benefits from the hack's short length. It doesn't really go on long enough for it to get annoying, so you won't have to worry about listening to these two tracks as your only music for hours. The sound gets a seven, for having two pretty good tracks and nice action sounds, plus the shortness of it means you'll be done with the hack before you're annoyed by it.

Addictiveness:
It was hard to give this game a rating in addictiveness, as it's hard to say whether I'll be coming back to it or not. After a while I decided this hack is something I might occasionally come back to. You don't really have much reason to go back to it more than once except for the gameplay, which is the exact same as in Super Metroid. So it's nice to play if you want to go back to Super Metroid, but only want to spend a few minutes on it. The lack of different enemies also hurts it, as you mostly fight generic space pirates, some underwater enemies, and a few bosses. The addictiveness of this game I gave a five. You might come back to it sometimes, and can be pretty fun. Though it's mostly something you'd play once or twice.

Depth: There isn't much depth in this hack, and it's mostly linear compared to Super Metroid. That's mostly expected though in a mini hack. Most of the items and upgrades are right in front of you and won't be passed by. The only item that really is hidden from you is the Plasma Beam, which can still be pretty easily found if you try and look for it. Other than that it's mostly just a quick run through of the linear game. There is one Easter Egg I found though. It wasn't very hard to find, but it was nice to see the developer thought of players going to a certain place. The depth is a three in this, as you do have one or two hidden items to go after, but most of the game is completely linear and quick to go through.

Difficulty:
I think the difficulty is pretty standard throughout the hack. You don't have to worry about getting lost, so that really lowers the difficulty that the original Super Metroid has. The enemies also won't give you much of a challenge, so they can be mostly breezes through. The only things that would really have a chance to kill you are the last two bosses, as they both can put up a pretty decent fight with the amount of weapons and health you have while fighting them. Neither of them are amazingly hard though, and can be beaten without too much trouble if you know what you're doing. I would give the difficulty a four, as most of the game is very little threat except for two bosses. Both of these can kill you, but they can be pretty easily beaten as long as you know what you're doing.

Wrapping up: Super Metroid Wet Winter is a pretty fun hack for what it is. You shouldn't go into a game like this expecting some huge adventure that'll keep you busy for a few days. While many games do give you that feeling, this is a mini-hack, something you play for a few minutes and then move on to something else. While it does have many problems, these are rating it by the scale of most full sized games. So a lot of these problems don't really mean much to a mini hack. Sure it's small and won't keep you occupied long, but you'll be having fun for the amount of time you do play it. I give the game in total a 7.5 out of 10. In my opinion that's a pretty good score for a game of it's size, and I recommend it if you want a small burst of Christmas themed Super Metroid gameplay.

Wow, you did an amazing job reviewing these games. I'm sure you appreciate reviewing the game as much as you played the game itself, so I'll give you many praises to future reviews. Keep it up!

Thank you both. I try to add as much detail as possible to the reviews I make. Nice to know that so far it seems to be paying off.
