Hello everyone, And welcome to the WWF Superstars review. I'm your host Cujo
and boy do we have a real slobber knocker here for you.
I can still remember going to the laundry mat with my mother as a very young child and asking her for "penny's" to play the "Hulk Hogan" game. Little did I know that my family was in a real rough patch financially and I was lucky if I got one dollar to play the WWF Superstars! Arcade game. That was only 2 plays for me because the machine at the laundry mat we were at cost me 50 cents a credit. It never took me any time at all before I was all out of "penny's". A few times I would get?
lucky and a teenager would come in and get really far in their quest for the "WWF World Tag Team Titles" Most of the time I would just stand and watch them play in pure awe as they would make their way to fight Andre "The Giant" and Ted Dibiase "The Million Dollar Man" accompanied by none other than "Virgil" him self.
Graphics 8 / 10
The games graphics were pretty standard for its time and had nothing really to break through in that department. The six wrestlers you can choose from look well and you can tell who is who. You really only get a little confused by "Hacksaw" Jim Dugen and Ted Dibiase at times. Other than that Andre "The Giant" towers over the rest of the WWF Superstars roster and that makes him feel some what intimating. The cut - scenes with the tag champions after each win are really nothing more than sub par low res drawings.?
Sound : 8 / 10?
As with the graphics the sound was also standard for its time but it also varied from arcade machine to arcade machine depending on how crowed the place you were playing WWF Superstars was. Also many of the WWF Superstars arcade machines suffered from really faulty, low quality and poorly placed speakers. If by chance you were ?a lucky "Hulkamaniac" and had access to a machine that was away from a lot of surrounding noise and had proper audio?functioning you may be able to under stand what the heck Andre "The Giant" was trying to say in the cut scenes after each win.
Addictiveness : 9 / 10
This is one of them retro games that was on my " classic games I have never beat as a kid bucket list" . Lets face it , this game must have raked in a bundle of quarters with players at 50 cents a credit. The fact that other than the first match, the computer players become very daunting and unstoppable at times. Yet they give you a sense that you can some how over come the computer players tricks by either a count out or submission hold. If or when you get a WWF World Tag Team Championship match shot VS Andre " The Giant " & ?"The Million Dollar Man " Ted Dibiase. It becomes a whole new challenge that you will with no doubt want to come out of victoriously no matter the cost.?
Story & Depth : 8 / 10
Not much of a real traditional WWF wrestling story line other than going for the sweet WWF Tag Team gold with a random WWF Superstar chosen at the hands of the Computer. Yet before the release of WWF Superstars, the very few and limited wrestling arcade games out really just played more like a fighting game of the time with grapples. With the release of WWF Superstars the arcade game, you finely got to experience the feeling of being able to be on the WWF wrestling circuit and moving up the ranks.
