First time here, let's see how I do.

Am I the only one who is tired of them ruining entire game series by making one-too-many sequels?

For a good example... Sonic the Hedgehog. The games were fun, but with each one it seems like they got worse and worse. Fans of the newer games will obviously disagree, but I liked the original ones A LOT more.

Another good example would be the Zelda games. Don't get me wrong, Twilight Princess was awesome. But it's the first one I've liked since Oracle of Ages/Seasons. Not to mention I'm shocked that Zelda didn't die after the second "Legend of Zelda" game was released.

Mario seems to be special. Asides from Mario Golf/Tennis, I've yet to find one I've actually disliked. I haven't tried Galaxy yet, though, so my opinion could change.

Newer game series, too, have suffered... Starfox 1, 2, and SF64 were great. I'm not a huge fan of Adventures and those other newer ones.

Games like Valkyrie Profile have suffered already, losing quality with the second game. It was still wonderful, but the story just wasn't too great to me... Answering all of the questions by claiming somebody traveled back in time isn't beneficial to the plot.

Anyways, enough of my rants. My point is, many games have been ruined (I didn't even touch Final Fantasy) simply because they did well and the company tried to make MORE of them. Is it just me who feels this way, or do I have anybody out there who agrees?

well, I think the only reason they bother to keep making them is because they've made money on the games already and they know the franchise is secure so why not pump out another game that will make money based on franchise name alone.

And with many of the games (SONIC!) you don't even have to redo the game.... you just make new levels with the same game engine you've already got and you've got a brand new game!

Some franchises did it well, Zelda, Mario, FF. They generally created good games (there were some flops... Mario paint, or FF7 ) but for the most part they've put enough time and energy into each game that they're good overall.

It's not just one too many, it's just too many in general. It's that way with the Star Fox games, Zelda games (I hated Twilight Princess to be honest) and definitely the FF games. I never played sonic games so I wouldn't really know

I am so happy to find someone else who doesn't like FF7. I am so sick and tired of that being considered the god of the FF series! It's only as popular as it is because it was the first three-dimensional FF title. But if you haven't played 12... or looked at 13... They're both awful compared to the older ones.

And to Ziggy:
Believe it or not, you're not the first I've met who didn't like Twilight Princess.

If you've never played Sonic and one day you decide to, make sure to start out with the old ones before you try any of the new crap. It went from Sonic running around jumping on top of enemies to beat them to a Final-Fantasy wannabe and Sonic running around with swords and the like.

well, I don't think FF7 was a flop... how can you considering how popular it is.... but I just don't think it's as great as some people make it out to be.

I've played it once all the way through and I've never been able to play it through again. Once you've played through certain games you just can't play them again. There isn't much that you can do differently with some games after playing it one time through. I feel that way about most RPG's though. Most of the time you get the same 6 abilities per person and that's all you can do and while they're fun the first time through, after you understand the abilities the game becomes so insanely easy to play it's pointless.

I don't think there is any certain number it depends on what it is.
For example the sport games that have come out every year since about 1998 they are getting better and sonic and mario and all of those are still great.
But Pokemon may have gone too far. It's too technical and for some reason I find the graphics too good.
I've never played any FF so I can't tell you about those.
Ziggy - HOW CAN YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED SONICE BEFORE?!?!?!?!
I didn't think it was possible to have never played Sonic haha.

I'll admit, I'm still a die-hard fan of Pokemon Red and Blue as well as the first 150 or so Pokemon. But they REALLY went overboard with the games and shows... Everything now just seems like a remake of an older one. Hell, Fire Red (I dunno about Leaf Green) was almost an EXACT COPY of old Red Version.

The sports games I think need to stop now. With the Xbox 360 and PS3's superb graphics, there's really not much else to improve on anymore (in my opinion).

If you haven't ever played an FF I feel sorry for you. I strongly suggest grabbing 1, 4, 6, and 10. They're the best in my opinion... Not so much 1, I just suggest it so you can see how much the games have evolved. But the newer ones are awful. The storylines just seem to fall apart... Plus, FF13 isn't even one game. It's 3 games (Two console, one mobile) that have *nothing* to do with each other, other than being in the same universe/dimension/whatever.

And yes. Never played Sonic is like having never eaten a cookie. You just don't find people like that.

A bit off topic. The Sonic show messed up a lot about the games. Nostalgia Critic really hit the mark on his explanation of the old Sonic TV series.

1 - Fire-Red is meant to be a copy of Red Version but with better graphics which it has.
2 - You just explained why they shouldn't stop. To make graphics better its not just the console. Think about it look at the first games that came out on PS2 compared to the games that are coming out on it now.
They are much better.

Sequals are definetely a great way to ruin a quality series, my prime example would be Tony Hawks. Every game up to THUG was great but they tried to introduce new features with every title which turned the series into what it is now. Just in my opinion, I think EA saw how unrealistic and fictional Neversoft was going with the series and thought theyd head in the opposite direction.

Thats my rant and rave, good topic thread urso.

Thank you, gtwalq. I agree, I remember sitting around for hours playing the old Tony Hawk games. They're just not so appealing anymore. Not that I don't still like them, the games just don't seem as fun.

And joebab, what I mean is now with the PS3 and 360 the graphics on the games have gotten as good as they will ever get (I think) until we start moving into things like virtual reality. Before I knew what it was, I thought the some of the video clips from Final Fantasy 13 were live-action movie clips.

I would have to agree with Urisofo. Video games are constantly used as a platform to continue a franchise that has either ran its course or simply lacks any new material to develop from. If the developers can't make adjustments and improve the quality of the game then they shouldn't be pumping out certain titles that make money simply because of a brand name like Wolverine or Batman.

Yeah, they do tend to make unneeded sequals that just drag a game on and on and on way past its expiry date.
Good example, the FF7 spin offs. Unneeded. The game ended, we're done. Move on to the next adventure.
Or like how Sonic is no longer a 2d platformer, I dont know what it is now.
When I saw the newer Sonic games I thought, thats just silly.
I mean Sonic with a sword and mutant abilities? WTF?
And Pokemon, well thats just getting silly, their just making stuff to cash in on the name now.
And the fact that there are so many legendaries you cannot get without events, as compared to the ONE event only Pokemon they had for RBY and GSC just makes it even more irritating.

I hadn't mentioned Megaman yet. I'm shocked at myself.
I don't think they should have ever left the NES.
Except to be ported over to handheld consoles.
But Megaman was definitely running out of ideas for enemies, and they kept on making the games.
They just kept taking random nouns and adding "-man" to the end of them to make an enemy.

I should slap you now
Mega Man is the exception to the rule, except maybe for the MMBN games, but they dont really follow the same formula as the originals.
I don't think there are too many Mega Man games, the X series is great and if it never left the NES we wouldnt have seen alot of great games like MM Legends or as I mentioned, X.
Mega Man just shows you cant keep a real villian (or hero) down (for long)

Eh...
They just lost appeal to me after they left the NES.
I tried them on the SNES, and I just didn't care for them as much anymore. I like my 8-bit.

How could they be working on FF14? They haven't even released 13 yet.

13 doesn't sound that appealing to me... Especially because they're trying to get as much money out of it as possible by releasing at as 3 different games (two console, one mobile).

And sorry to say, but Final Fantasy got old after 10. After that steaming pile that was X-2, the things after that went to hell. I dunno about FF11, though, because I was never able to play it (no PS2 internet connection)

I know I'm a little late but I find that if you change the focus to a back story character into a main character and do so for every game it would likely be like playing an all new game with an all new story right? for example the way they made that shadow game is the closest thing I can think of but I still have not seen all the endings in that one.
