Metal Gear Solid is considered one of the greatest games of all time. This third person strategy game offers a new play style that revolutionized the psx and the gaming industry. The plot to this game involves a group of terrorists trying to take over the world using the nuclear weapon “Metal Gear”. In order to prevent this, the famous “Solid Snake” is sent in by Foxhound, the organization attempting to prevent a nuclear war. This game relies heavily on stealth and patience, which provided a new challenge. This forced players to take their time and think carefully about what they did beforehand, rather than rush through and finish the game in 10 minutes.
The graphics in this game are spectacular. The terrain and enemies are easy to see and it also comes with a portable visual radar that allows snake to monitor his position in accordance to the enemies. The faces are a little blurred, but the detail is still great for a psx game. The movement is smooth and simple, a huge step forward after games like croc and tomb raider. It’s easy to read and understand; Visually Pleasing. Shooting is somewhat difficult, as well as the line of view sometimes, but it becomes easier after playing for a while.
The sound in this game is good, and very important. As with any stealth game, hearing is an important sense to have and use, when sneaking around. The terrain provides certain spots that are louder than others and by walking over them; you run the risk of being heard, and possibly discovered. Sound can also be used to your advantage. By knocking on walls and hiding, you can lure enemies to a specific area where they can be easily dispatched with a silenced weapon-or you can lure them to sneak past if you’re trying to reach a certain location. Loud weapons, hand to hand combat, cameras, and other things will give away your position to the enemies, sounding the alarm. When the alarm sounds, an endless supply of enemies may come, and the only way to escape is to hide for a certain amount of time and get out of their line of view. This game only introduces a few friendly characters; most of the people you’ll run into are terrorists, excluding a few victims you’ll meet and Foxhound communicating by radar. The invoices and people are vocally understandable and keep with the flow of the game.
This game is quite addictive, and provides the player with a real and genuine sense that they are sneaking about a heavily guarded Alaskan base on a secret mission to save the world. It’s very important to save a lot in this game because when you die, you will lose everything you did not have before you last saved. You might be like me; and be used to rushing through super Mario world. Well in this game, I had to learn the hard way that patience make perfect. It might be boring to wait for the slow moving terrorists to walk down a hallway or for cameras to turn in the opposite direction, but it sure beats doing the whole floor over again. I’ll have to rate this 9, because the Psycho Mantis boss is nearly impossible to defeat in this game (In fact, I think it is impossible, but I’m not completely sure).
The story is good and makes sense. It’s easy to follow and comprehend, and by listening to the cut-scenes, it’s easy to understand where you have to go next and what you have to do. If you get stuck, you can always call headquarters and they will give you a clue on what you have to do next (or you could just go online and look it up like a cheater, you big cheater). The people you have radio contact with have many different voice overs, and you can call them during/after almost every event to receive a new message that may not help, but still makes the game more interesting.
The depth in this game is not bad. Unfortunately though, as I’ve said, cannot be fully accomplished unless Psycho Mantis is defeated, and it’s nearly impossible using an emulator. Beyond him, I cannot remember exactly how much longer the game lasts, but the content surely makes it worth the while.
The game is somewhat difficult, although it becomes very simple over time. The more you use stealth, the more likely you’ll receive positive results. In order to progress through this game, you’re going to need to make use of your abilities and equipment in order to evade the enemy and successfully infiltrate the base.
This game deserves a high rating. This classic will forever be the highlight of the psx, and the original masterpiece which ignited the creation of many sequels attempting to recreate a powerful game that could innovate and control the gaming era.
