Pac-Man World Pac-Man took on a whole new dimension in Pac-Man World 1 for PlayStation. The game was released for Pac-man’s 20th Anniversary, as you see in the title screen, and the original arcade game is included. Pac-Man’s family and friends have been kidnapped by Toc-Man, an evil robot version of Pac-Man created by a ghost named Orson. Pac-Man must journey to Ghost Island to stop him. To get to Toc-Man however Pac-man must travel through 6 worlds to get there: Pirate, Ruins, Space, Fun House, Factory, and Graveyard. Each world brings Pac-Man face to face with a different boss at the end of the last stage in that world. In addition to eating dots, chomping ghosts with power pellets, and getting fruit, Pac-Man can also Rev-Roll, which is similar to Sonic’s speed; and Butt Bounce, which is similar to Mario’s ground pound. As you go through the levels you try to collect fruit along the way: Apples, Strawberries, Oranges, Bells, Peaches, and more. Each level has a Galaxian which is a maze like classic Pac-Man. While looking for fruits you will come across letters that spell Pac-Man…. P A C M A N. If you spell Pac-Man you’ll unlock a surprise. You have 3 lives default in the arcade game with no settings to change it. Lives are also important in the main game as you have life pieces to collect throughout the game. Pac-Man has an additional power-up besides power pellets: a steel suit, similar to Mario’s metal suit from Super Mario 64. It allows him to walk underwater, where he normally swims, and butt bounce underwater too. This game is a more modern and updated Pac-Man introducing the gaming franchise to new generations of players while providing glimpses of the original game to older generations familiar with the original arcade games. The Pac-Man World family of games includes this game as well as Pac-Man World 2 and Pac-Man World 3. The new series of Pac-Mans is and will be a popular choice for PlayStation 1 systems for many years to come. Overall: 8.5 Building on the popularity of the original series in name, this game creates a new playing experience for both young and old gamers. Graphics: 7 Above average for PlayStation but not as good as later games. Sound: 9 The new songs in this game are somewhat catchy but the sound effects that match the new scenes and action are really cool. Addictiveness: 8 The newness of this game makes you want to play it again and again. Story: 7 The basic story is centered on Pac-Man searching to find his kidnapped family members throughout the game. Depth: 9 Since this is a new game concept, there are plenty of places in the six levels to explore and find out what Pac-Man can do as well as how he navigates new environments. Difficulty: 5 Once you get the hang of how to navigate Pac-Man, it is relatively easy to get through the levels. Some of the new skills take some practice at first to be able to use them in the levels.
