I play Brawl less often online because it's better to play it with someone beside you.  Like in a party for instance.  You play Smash Brothers while drinking with your buddies and gleefully smash your friend after a funny match.  P.S.: Not in a violent way....

I used to play online on Smash Brothers Brawl almost all the time I played it. I even played it with a Youtuber and someone famous on Flipnote, beating them both. I was very good at that game, it was all I played on the Wii for a very long time. Now I don't play it, it just got boring beating the same people again and again. There wasn't any challenge, I could complete all of the game modes in the highest difficulty plus we got an Xbox 360 so I never really played the Wii since. I played SSBB not so long ago at my friends house but I was really rusty and only won one game. I think I will get the new Smash Brothers for the 3DS when it comes out and see if I can do any good in  the future!

When I was young I would love to play SSBB online because
I would like to see the different play styles of every different user I played.
I would almost play like everyday because I loved the game in general and
loved whooping other people's booty online. I would not enjoy just winning against
the level 10 computers it was just too easy to smash them around.

I haven't ever played brawl online. It's just so much easier and quicker to put in AIs and play with whoever is with me at the time. Usually I have four people so it's no problem.

"I don't play the game online at all because I think the online system is jacked. It has been from the get-go. This is also a problem of the Wii, since you had to put in a ridiculously long code already, but then adding to the Brawl code just to get your friends to play is just silly. And you can't tell me that they couldn't have done a decent job with it, as the original X-Box's online wasn't terrible, and by the time Brawl came out, Xbox and PS3 had online support with their games (such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) having decent leveling systems and upgrades themselves. Whatever they did with Brawl was silly. The servers were terrible (THE LAG was terrible) and the fact that you could only play two minutes per game made it underwhelming. Mario Kart Wii was the best online Wii game I played; I would play it all the time and it wasn't exactly perfect. But they could have at least given Brawl's online a decent attempt rather pumping it up to be something great, then totally under-delivering on their product. I'm hoping that the next Super Smash Brothers is better, with the possibility of DLC. I know I would pay for extra characters if they could pull it off, and I'm sure that other would as well. Let's hope they do it."

This, basically. The developers weren't focused on the online play of the game. In fact, Sakurai stated--forgot the citation, but it was in an interview--after the game was finished that the online function wasn't great because he believed online gaming was too serious. He wanted his game to be fun, not cause problems. Regardless, I would've enjoyed the game so much more if there'd been a better way to compete online. I don't think Sakurai made the right decision when implementing this function, but hopefully the Smash series will redeem itself in SSB4.

I agree on the fact the Wii had potential. Honestly though, friend codes make sense to an extent. I'm not saying I support the idea--I've hated them since the DS--but it's a good way for the company to assure parents that their games are stalker-proof. (Also, my first go-to when explaining the fact that the Wii had potential for Online has always been Mario Kart Wii. Then again, Mario Kart DS also had decent Online, so they were already prepared when it came to the next gen.)
