The Game boy advance is well known for It's big variety of 2D side scrollers and platformers, Including our primo Mario. But then in 2004, we got this underrated gem for the Game boy advance only released in Europe, This game is none other then Asterix and obelix XXL. Will this game show us what 3D truly is? Let's see....
Story-6/10 The plot behind this game is that Asterix and his big tubby friend Obelix are about to go down to the forest to go boar hunting, But while exploring, a storm is occurring where they live, and the lightning manages to storm in on a tree. Their dog dogmatix is heavily frightened by this current storm... In the meantime, Our two heroes manage to see a fire in the distance, They manage to see what is going on, and then the two meet this roman dude in the service of Caesar, he then wants to help asterix and obelix, then our heroes quest begins....
Gameplay-8/10 Asterix and obelix is a 3D platformer, and quite a fun one at that, the 3D graphics are done very nicely! Except for one thing, It can get pretty laggy at times, causing this game to slow down, otherwise, there are no problems. In each level, you collect these Gray looking Knight statues, To be completely honest, I have NO idea what these things do, But sooner or later, I will find out! There are also 2 golden tokens in each level also. I think these items are supposed to help you with your level completion rate. The controls are pretty simple to master, A is jump, A again in the air is double jump, B is attack, L and R rotates the camera, Holding both buttons centers the camera, And select lets you switch between Asterix and obelix. Along the way you will be fighting Romans, evil Greeks, etc...
Graphics-9/10 My word these graphics are amazing! This game truly pushed the limits of the Game boy advance....All the words you'll be exploring are big, colorful, and just a blast to exlpore....Although, The draw distance can be quite a problem though, but other then that, There's nothing else to say about the graphics except, They are truly astonishing for the Game boy advance!
Sound-6/10 The sound in this game is....Uhhh I guess It is okay, It is truly nothing to write home about. The songs mostly repeat over and over and over again through the levels you'll be exploring, It's actually stuck in my head now when you come to think about it! As for the sound effects, they are Ok as well, there is a sound for when you collect items, When you beat up enemies, etc.
Addictiveness-7/10 Is this is a game I'm ever going to play again? Oh why yes it is, I don't see any other reason to come back it except to replay the fun levels and collecting everything you missed. It is a pretty long game as well, there are 5 big worlds to explore with 4 levels each, This game kept me quite busy....
Depth-7/10 The game is quite big, I mean there are 5 worlds to explore each with 4 levels, So the game will probably take you about 5 hours to beat at least. There are also alot of extras to collect such as the knight statues and yellow tokens I mentioned earlier, Otherwise, That is pretty much it for depth....
Difficulty-4/10 Uhhhh....what? If theres one thing I can't get over about this game, It is the VERY low difficulty level! I do not think I died even once in this whole entire game! It is that easy, I mean if your going to make a game, Then at least make it challenging, I mean this is just plain ridiculous.
Overall-8.1/10 So in general, If you want a good 3D game on the GBA that is not a racer, I suggest pick this one up! It was well worth the money as well. I gave this game a 8.1 because How amazing it does with the 3D visuals and everything else. So Give this game a go! You won't regret it. Anyways bye!
