Tom and Jerry, who could forget tom and Jerry? This lovable cat and mouse duo have been chasing each other since around 1940! There are a bunch of cartoons from the 90's I love, but tom and Jerry is one of my personal favorites. The duo also got some direct to video movies also, and one of them is tom and Jerry the magic ring, now I wasn't expecting them to make a game out of this, yet they did. This is tom and Jerry the magic ring for the Game boy advance.
Story-6/10 In the basement of tom and Jerry's mansion, a wizard named chip is making a potion, the ingredients needed for the potion are warts from a bullfrog, one stick of butter, and milk from a cow. Later tom ends up in the basement, chip orders tom to guard his magic ring while he goes to Calcutta to milk a cow. If tom does a good job, he will be rewarded with a big juicy salmon, but if not, he will be kicked out of the house. Behind tom's back, Jerry grabs the ring from the table then wears it as if it was a crown, then tom gives chase, THEN! The quest begins....
Addictiveness-4/10 Another thing about this game I can't get over, it gets old VERY quickly! I just shut off my game boy after like, what? The third level? Mainly, the game can difficult on alot of parts, such as this one level where you are in some sort space world and you must avoid the beam on the left of the screen or else you'll die, Meanwhile theres a bunch of obstacles spamming at you. WHO DESIGNED THIS LEVEL?
Depth-4/10 Once you finish the game as tom, you can play through all of it again as Jerry, except the order of levels will be different, and yeah, I guess that's all for replay value, Not much to come back to when you finish the quest....a reason to shelve this game.....
Difficulty-9/10 One of the game's high points, the difficulty! I remember getting stuck on around the fourth level! All that and those 2 flaws I mentioned in the gameplay section are main reasons why the game is so unplayable!
Overall-3.8/10 Overall, I would only recommend this title to hardcore Tom and Jerry fans! I mean, sure this is a kids title, but it is way too unplayable, difficult, and broken to even recommend to anybody at all! I ssuggest you rent this one....These are all the reasons why I gave the game a 3.8.
Gameplay-5/10 Tom and Jerry the magic ring is a double dragon clone, and a VERY mediocre one at that, there are a tons of problems with this brawler, and I'll go by them one by one. First, the hit detection, it is WAY OFF, either causing you to miss an enemy, or hit any of the scenery! (I:E Couch's, sofas.) Second, the enemies are WAY overpowered, meaning they take about 20 hits to defeat, you have alot of weapons at your disposal, such as eggs, baseball bat, etc. My personal favorite weapon is well....the baseball bat! You can get through a whole level using the baseball bat! It is that awesome! By the way, like every other Game boy advance game on the market at the time, this game uses password save, meaning you'll have use a special code to play previous levels or pick up where you left off. Luckily the codes are only 5 letters long, so it's not that big of a problem.
Graphics-7/10 Graphic wise, tom and Jerry isn't that bad, I mean they did quite a nice job with all the spries and scenery. While all the locales are just your standard stuff, construction sites, sewers, house, etc. The cutscenes are pretty nice too. All the characters have alot of emotions too.
Sound-5/10 Sound, eh. The BGM and SFX are OK....Nothing to write home about, all the songs seem to fit the levels nicely, yet if theres one thing i can't get over, it's the fact that the BGM sounds SO Game boy colorish! Meaning it sounds so 8 bit and such. But other then that, the music is OK...Sound effects, theres some little noise when you pick up a health restore, theres the usual banging and whatnot, and a while lot of more.....
