Ok so I've decided to upgrade to Windows 7 but Im not sure which version to get for my laptop. Its an Inspiron 1501 with 2.00GB of RAM and its a 32bit operating system. I would think that since its a 32bit operating system, that I should get windows 7 32bit, but wouldnt 64bit be faster? O.O

ElectroGirl:
64bit is highly recommended.
It has a lot more memory, meaning it'll work a lot faster, and you will be able to download lots more programs than 32bit. I've currently got a 32bit computer, and I'm dying to get a 64bit. I really need Adobe After effects, but can only be downloaded on a 64bit. plus, a 32bit, which I've got, has very low memory. It doesn't work as that fast, and can't download lots of programs.
Get a 64bit.

last I checked, dell dont have 64 bit drivers so you will run into problems with 64 bit.
64 bit does NOT have more memory, it cand handle more. 32 bit can handle up to 3.5 GB
You have only 2gb.
You want 32 bit.
Before you do anything, download windows 7 upgrade advisor on your pc, it will scan your hardware and check if it can run the o.s properly.
Then you can proceed

I haven't had a Win32 for it, and always had a 64 bit computer and laptop. If you want better storage, a Win32 might be your choice according to TNO.

I have no problem with Win64 with all of my storage and softwares I used, so you can consider that

ElectroGirl : If your computer has a 64 bit compatible processor then you get windows 7 64 bit, if your processor is not compatible with 64 bit then you get windows 7 32 bit.

Also since you currently have a 32 bit operating system then you should get windows 7 32 bit because windows 7 64 bit is probably not compatible with your laptop. Hope this helps!

It depends on what kind of processor your computer has. If it was manufactured in the last 4 years, it most likely has a 64-bit processor. The advantages of using a 64-bit operating system is that you can use more than 4 GB of RAM, and you will get a slight speed boost when you use 64-bit software. Seeing as you only have 2 GB of RAM, switching to a 64-bit operating system won't change anything in that regard. Still, personally, I would recommend you get the 64-bit version of Windows 7, as developers are moving away from the 32-bit architecture, and less and less programs will support it as time goes on.
