I have a few thoughts on what I think spirit is, particularly because there are different definitions, but I'm going to give it a go.
First definition of spirit: Alcohol. If you know anything about alcohol at all, they're also known as "spirits." I think this is because before human-kind could scientifically understand what alcohol actually did to your body, people thought that "spirits" were the ones who brought about drunkenness. I could be wrong, but I think that's what it means. But the reason I bring it up is because of how it has played a role in my life.
Essentially, I worked as a server/bartender for a while, and while I enjoyed the job, it gave me pause to consider a few things. The same people, every single day, would leave their jobs and come to the bar and drink. And drink. And drink. And drink. And it gets to the point where it's extremely sad, because even those these people have nice jobs, nice cars, and all this money, they aren't happy. It's a bit stereotypical, but seeing it first hand really has had an impact on my life. It gets worse when you consider the majority of my coworkers abused these "spirits" because they're unhappy as well. Because of this, because of what I've seen on a daily basis, I rarely ever drink. It's most definitely overrated.
Second, I'll talk about what "spirit" is in respect to action. When you are "spirited," you are motivated to act. If you have spirit, then you are full of fire, locked, cocked, and ready to rock anything that comes in your way. I'm a pretty spirited person in a lot of ways, particularly because of the fact that I was bullied. I went from being a quiet, intellectual-type person to an out-going, athletic, and fiery person. It's funny how surprised people are when I do showcase my intelligence, and even that is part of my spiritedness, because people who assume I'm stupid get to find out how wrong they really are.
Third, the spirit refers to the perfected man in me that God created, the one who was connected to God's Spirit before we fell and the one that was born again after I accepted Christ. This "spirit" is separate from my soul in that it is not guided by the morality that is my own body, whereas my soul is more my mind and my consciousness. The spirit is the part of me that I strive to submit myself to and become, because as I said before, it is the perfected me. It's the me that God looks upon and sees, not the slightly-over weight, slouch-postured and sometimes irritable me that likes to present himself often. This is the person I know I will become, and it's really what keeps me from going crazy with agitation at myself and my imperfections.
The fourth meaning of Spirit is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity of God, including the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit, to me, is the power and the "being" of God that is with us on this earth now. The Holy Spirit is what I believe speaks to us and guides us to live a holy life, protecting us from ourselves and helping us to grow in Christ. Kind of with the third definition of spirit, we have to submit to the Holy Spirit, and the submission process takes some time. I also think that it is the Holy Spirit that interprets His Word to us. I think the Holy Spirit was with Jesus while He was performing His miracles, and actually was the driving force behind the execution of the miracles. It's my belief that the Holy Spirit needs to be worshiped and credited as much as the Father and the Son, as the Holy Spirit is just as much God as the other two.
Anyways, I know this was long, but I take these kinds of questions seriously. And I know "religion" or "Christianity" wasn't asked to be brought into it, but it's just as much a part of me as my leg or my arm, and so it's very important to me. I hope these answers are acceptable, and I'm looking forward to seeing more.
