Games just aren't as good?!
So I was playing COD 12 (ha) and hit one of those walls where you just think 'I'm always going to be crap at this, I remember when I was good at gaming' and I started to reminisce about the glory days. Then it came to me 'SUPER PUZZLE FIGHTER II on the PS1' I ruled at that!!
I remembered spending many many many hours with friends battling each other in to dribbling submission, how on free play no one could beat me as Sukura and how even on the dreaded random character selection I could hold my own with pretty much anyone. We even used to play competition Puzzle fighter with a prize at the end, £5 to enter with prizes for 1st and 2nd
I had to relive it and my PS is long gone, so I searched, found www.vizzed.com and once again fell in love with this gem.
Why?
I appreciate my geriatric ramblings may not be selling this, so why should you play this game?
This is a Tetris variant with bells and whistles - not a fan of puzzle games? then try it anyway! To start you choose a Street Fighter based protagonist who then has the age old mission of knocking seven bells out of your opponent. The two gladiators sit in the middle of the screen and are accompanied by a Tetris like vertical rectangular window.
Your fighters attacks are created / based on the removal of clustered coloured blocks from your vertical window which then appear on your opponents. They can be removed by laying either coloured fire blocks on matching coloured clusters or by dropping diamonds on a block which will remove all blocks of that colour. The bigger the clusters removed the greater the attack on your opponent.
Combos are the real way to pound opponents down I.e. multi chain attacks and big combos lead to some spectacular set pieces in the middle of the screen!
Victory of course comes when your opponents screen is filled with blocks and the room filled with swear words :p
3 key areasGraphics are cute and lovely manga stylee, nothing amazing of course, this is old hardware, but they gfx are perfect for purpose - The scraps in the middle can be very distracting, my tip is to watch friends play and just focus on the punch up!Sound is perfect - lots of cute squeeks, hadukens, plinky plonky tunes - excellent stuff. It brings a smile to your face hearing the wacky soundtrack. Addictiveness is off the scale in multiplayer, it just keeps going - even newer players quickly step up. A pretty decent but short lived one player affair.OverallOne of the best things about this is game is the way it can swing in a second. You can be on deaths door with your screen almost full with random blocks, and then one lucky or strategic drop of a fire block and your whole screen is clear and your opponents are shouting WTF!! Is someone knows a more fun puzzler do let me know because this is absolute magic
