Welcome citizens of Vizzed! it's time for another review by me, MitsuriZX! This time, we will be reviewing Double Dragon Advance! Challenging. Exciting. Cool. These are only a few words that can describe this game! Luisa and Lucas will be helping with the review, so say hello!
Luisa : Hi everyone! Lucas : What's up?
Double Dragon is, without a doubt, one of the most influential beat'em'ups ever on consoles. It got so famous, it actually got ported to the Game Boy Advance! And now, we will be talking about this port, or rather, this incredible remake of the original Double Dragon.
The concept of the game is simple. Get to the end of the stage while beating enemies. Can't get more simple than that. At the end of each stage, you'll face a boss that is much tougher than the regular enemies. However, there will be also items that can help you in the game! Some weapons even provides you with some combo capability, so look out for them!
Luisa : - Some stages are filled with deadly traps, so be careful! However, you can also use these traps to your advantage! Lucas : - Falling in holes/spikes or water will instantly kill you, so watch out! But, you can also throw enemies into these death traps, and oh boy, it feels very satisfying!
Aren't we getting a little ahead of ourselves? Before you can even play Double Dragon Advance, you must understand one thing... This game has awkward controls. Not like bad controls, more like too many commands for you to execute. Instead of having only one attack button like most beat'em'ups, you have a punch button and a kick button. Good use of these two buttons will lead you to victory!
Luisa : - When you are dashing or jumping, if you press the punch button and kick button at the same time, you will unleash a spinning kick! Lucas : - If you stand still and press the punch+kick buttons, you will enter a special stance where you can deliver two kinds of different attacks! Variety is this game's middle name!
The graphics look interesting, stages are well made, and the soundtrack simply rocks. You feel like you're actually watching one of those Kung-Fu movies. There are some nicely drawn cut-scenes between stages, which absolutely increases the cool factor of this game.
Luisa : - If you press your guard button, you can defend yourself agaisn't some attacks, however, guarding too often will leave you wide open to attacks! On the other hand, Guarding with good timing will allow you to counter-attack your opponent, leaving them defenseless! Lucas : - And, the final attack that finishes an opponent changes depending on what button you're pressing! Gotta have style!
If you're looking for a worthy beat'em'up that can be played anywhere, anytime, this is it. I highly recommend Double Dragon to all beat'em'up fans. It has a gentle learning curve, but that doesn't means it's easy. If you want to be the best, you have to practice!
Thanks for being an awesome reader! Here are some secrets for you!
Luisa : - Is the game too hard? On the options screen, press and hold down the select button, then press: L, R, Down, L, R, Down, L, R, Right. You will hear a ring if you did it correctly. This lets you start with 10 credits! Good for begginers. Lucas : - Is the game too easy? On the options menu, press and hold down the select button and then press: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right You will hear a gong if you did it correctly. This enables Expert Mode! I dare you to finish it!
