For those who've been watching, Lauren Silberman worked out at a regional combine for the NFL.

http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2013/03/03/first-female-kicker-competes-in-nfl-tryout/

Or you can use any other news outlet of Fox makes you quiver with anger.

She had two kick-offs of 17 and 13 yards and ended the try-out early.

Is this good for women or did she embarrass the gender by doing so poorly?

I feel she was trying her best. But by nature most guys will be sexist and think they are for sports and women are for cleaning, cooking, and being a "trophy wife." I knew at one point there may be a female NFL player, but she'll probably be treated like a outcast on the field--being the only girl.

mister sandman : Yes, but it'd be a huge step for a woman to get into the NFL. It's not about there already being one, but proving that a girl can do stuff that a guy can do.

I think she embarrassed herself, and that it was a publicity stunt for her company. She had never played football before that point. She could not give any evidence that she had.

mister sandman : Do you honestly feel a woman could legitly compete in the NFL as a quarterback?  You think women can sling footballs 50 yards with the speed and accuracy required to compete at the top levels?

If they could, they'd be doing it now.  As it is, so few of the most elite players in NCAA football get to the pros.  Women, much less the abilities, have not shot at quarterback.

warmaker : I want to say that a woman probably could. One reason we don't see that level of ability in women's leagues is probably because many women don't play football, as 1). it's considered by many to be a "man's game", and 2). not as many women are interested in football as men.

However, I don't think it's a good idea for women to compete in an NFL game, for the same reason a man shouldn't compete in a women's league game: Regardless of strength or ability, the average man's frame is considerably larger than the average woman's frame. The result? Many serious bone breaking injuries. IF a woman were to be in the NFL, I would say a Kicker would be best, as it contains minimal contact.

I don't see a need in a woman joining the NFL if there is already a women's league, as it would make the women's league pointless. However, if this was to be done, she should have left it up to someone that was more capable. But then again, it may encourage some woman who is capable to try it now. Who knows?

I say if she is good enough them by all means she can play. If she gets hurt playing against men that is the risk she must choose to take. No one is forcing her to play in the NFL. However I can only see this being a negative thing overall. Does she get ready, showered, etc in a separate locker room or does she share with all the guys and get harassed? I don't see this ending well.

That tryout was a farce and all it accomplishes is fueling the argument that men are athletically superior to men. Stunts like that make me so mad. If a female really wanted to be in the NFL and out in the required effort, it could happen. Not enough really try though. If you think of how many guys fail, obviously you won't see a smaller pool likely to produce a sucess. It's simple probabilty.

Also so what if there is a female league? There is a LPGA. Does that mean girls can't compete with guys in golf? That isn't a big athletic game even.

I stay with what I originally said on this topic: It was a publicity stunt for her small company that was going out of business.
