I just did a speedrun of Super Mario Advance 1: Super Mario Bros 2 on a VBA emulator I have. I did a cheated speedrun, which used the following codes:

Infinite health
Infinite jumping
Invincible forever

I did a run, using the frame counter to time myself. Every game is 60 fps for NTSC systems, and I finished in ~40,000 frames. Guess what the most jaw-dropping part is. I did it in 666 seconds! DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN! But my real time was 11 minutes, 6 seconds. Cheated speedruns with codes enabled are not allowed for speedrunning, but I tried for curiousity. Very fun run, I need to say. My first run before this one was maybe 1-3 minutes slower because I started later because I was goofing off with the file select and speed throttle settings. I fast fowarded only the boring parts which was the waiting between levels with the bonus game.

The run is classified as for me:

• Uses warps.
• Uses cheats.
• Starts from save to start at world 1-1. I already did beat the game and got all the special A coins. It was a awesome run.
• Character: Toad only
• Ending score: 1,457,950 (Started from save data)

I started from game reset (frame 0) and ended the run by entering the last door after beating the final boss, at around frame 40000. I didn't do a VBA movie recording, so it is not entirely correct. I will keep a speedrun history of this game for me with the cheats. All runs I will do of this game will use the cheats said above.

Speedrun history with the said cheats:

3/1/2013: Stevie 764 / StephenIsFast - 11:06.5x
3/2/2013: Stevie 764 / StephenIsFast - 10:56.4x

READ THIS: I just did another run, which my goal was 10:50 or faster, but I failed by 6.4 seconds. I still didn't bother recording the run, because, I would have to setup a lot of stuff. First, the .vbm file has to start recording, and then I have to quickly start as fast as I can.

From what I saw in my unrecorded (again) run was that I lost time from the following:

• Forgot to instantly press buttons to cancel the warp screen faster. Time lost: 1 to 1.5 seconds.
• Mouser refight in world 6. Time lost: 2-3 seconds.
• World 6-3, couldn't find the correct vase to find the key instantly. Time lost: 3-5 seconds.

So in total, I lost maybe 7-8 seconds in the run. 10:50 is still my goal. I will record the run for real this time in 2 hours. Going to post a announcement when I am about to do the run. I don't have video cameras to connect to my computer, so I can't stream or record the videos. My computer also doesn't have enough space to record 5-7 minutes of the run or more, so nope, not bothering a stream. At 6 PM, the announcement will be posted, as in I am ready to do the run. VBM recordings aren't too bad, and they are only not even around 25-50 KB unless it is a run that is more than 5 minutes. My run might be 100+ KB in size for my goal, but it will be worth it.

Anyways, this is for speedrunning, and also to celebrate about around 3 years of my awesome speedrun history. It offically started in 2010 and 2011, but I never did full game runs. I did time attacks. But now, I just did a awesome full game run. Like I said, cheats aren't allowed in speedruns, but I really couldn't finish the game on the NES because I never had a cheating device, and the game was too hard. Everything is okay up until world 6, where I can barely get to the first door before dying. I tried luigi and toad, the best characters, and no luck. So only the GBA is mentioned.

When you play Super Mario Advance 1-4, you will get a save file corruption error for no reason. To fix, just go to options, then Emulator, and switch flash 64k to 128k, nothing else needs to be changed. Reload the game, and it should play. This also applies to vizzed, but vizzed doesn't have emulator settings, so you will need a VBA emulator, works best for everyone, and basic emulator users. No$GBA is like one little program that won't run my Super Mario Advance games.

Ok, enough talk. I will speedrun at 6 PM. I will create a announcement in this thread once I am starting. Once I finish the run, I will post the exact time I got. 10 minutes and 56 seconds is my current record. Go go sub 10:50!

Announcement: I am starting the run in a minute. I will post the results of my run once it is done. I will record a VBM file so it show the exact time it took to beat the game from game boot up to the final door entry which is TAS timing rules.

EDIT: Final results from run:

Time: 10:08.98
Frames: 36539
Timing used: TAS
Non-TAS (no rerecording)

I restarted a few times because I screwed up World 1-1 and 1-2 killing birdo with my invincibility, because I landed right next to him twice, and I had to reset the run after that. I then got this.

I had a barely noticable screw up and a minor screw up. I almost grabbed Birdo's orb to complete a level twice, and I could barely see it. I had another screw up at the final boss with King Wart. While I was throwing veggies at him, when I was catching one to throw at him, his bubble attack had made one of my veggies go poof before I could catch it. I am too scared to try jumping where the veggies spawn to get them because I will miss very easily, and then I will have to restart the entire run. But I improved by nearly 50 seconds, but I wanted the improvement to be as big as possible. At this rate, I could hit 10:07 or 10:06 in the future, but no sub 10 is going to happen because I pretty much had the run 99% perfect. No more goals will be made, but 10:05 will be my future goal if I ever get enough improving and remove the screen scroll problem the GBA port has, which costed 15-20 seconds. I autofired the A button for the long climb in World 7-1 because I didn't have a VBA camhack emulator which would let me see where I am offscreen, because I could save more time from that. But only about nearly 4 bonus seconds, so near sub 10 can happen in the future with camhack VBA emulator.
