OVERVIEW

I'm fully aware that this game is only in Japanese and a translation patch has not been release for the game as of yet but so what. Once you figure out how to play this game then the game becomes enjoyable. This game is a mixture of a Action-RPG, Puzzle and a shooter towards the end. It is based off the anime series of the same name and despite the show and the game's name is that of the older son, the main character in both is actually his father who took away his spotlight sometime ago.

STORY - B

Bakabon's little brother, Hajime, has gone missing and it's up to Bakabon's Papa to scurry around for clues to find out where is and bring him back safely but little does he know that there is an even much sinister plot at hand. Once you find out where he is and locate him after a shooting sequence, you play a game of 15-puzzle where you eliminate one Hajime after another until one remains then it turns out that aliens are planning to invade the earth in Japan and thus Papa defeats the main alien in another shooting sequence and gets to choose one of three endings: Alien Spa, Alien Entertainment Show, or All You Can Eat at an alien restaurant.
GRAPHICS - B-

The graphics are good enough for a passing grade. The characters and portrait are drawn to look just like their anime counterparts and the backgrounds are awesome. During the cutscenes where you can choose to speak, fight, or give, the character faces are picture perfect especially when one party gets beaten up. An interesting part of level design you will discover is that during one part of the game, you will enter a bar and buy any drink that gets you thrown out. Go back in and buy a beer (middle one). You will learn about a secret that involves jumping on a manhole three times to enter a secret tunnel. The first secret tunnel has rocks that are arranged to spell out the name Bakabon in Japanese Katakana.

SOUND - B-

The music  and sound are also good enough to pass. Nothing that you would want to play on your iPod or anything related but at least there is no ear rape involved. The best music in the game in my opinion is during the shooting sequences but overall it is a good game soundtrack to have on the computer.

GAMEPLAY & CONTROLS - B-/D
(depending on if you know what you are doing)

Upon first impression, you will see Papa just kick and jump but you don't attack anybody with the kick. That is only used to reveal hidden objects and break rocks that lead to new places. When you start going through the game you will find a lot of interesting sequences and secrets. The shooting sequence can be a little tricky and cheap. One hit and your ship is destroyed but there is no game over for it. During the first shooting scenario you just buy another UFO. The order of yellow, green, and blue vary in terms of quality, speed, and how expensive the ship is. During the final ship sequence, you get to retry the sequence over and over until you defeat the final boss.

ADDICTIVENESS - B/D
(depending on if you know what you are doing)

If you are not that Japanese literate then you might not find this very addictive but if you know what to do, then it is hard to put this game down until you beat it. It starts to get frustrating towards the end when you try to play the 15-puzzle because it is easy to make one wrong move and have to reset the puzzle but to be nice, I'll give you a solution that will help you out.

The puzzle is arranged like this:

     A B C
      D E
F G H I J
 K L M N
   O     P

H is empty at the start and you will play a game similar to chinese checkers.

1. A to H
2. M to D
3. C to A
4. O to H
5. E to K
6. F to O
7. J to H
8. G to I
9. P to J
10. A to H
11. L to E
12. J to H
13. E to L
14. O to H

REPLAYABILITY - A-/D (depending on if you know what you are doing)

With three different endings to choose from, you may want to play the game over a couple times to see them all.

OVERALL - B-

Never judge a book by its cover. I actually got a kick out of playing this game even without the translation. I had a little bit of help from my stepgrandma to beat this game and I enjoyed every minute of it.
