Oh, boy that's a hard one but I'd have to answer Gauntlet, to be honest. That's the game we played the most. We loved Mario World and Duck Hunt and Frogger and Pong on the Atari and Pacman and yes, yes I am old, thank you. But once we got our hands on Gauntlet, that was our go-to game for years and years.

Dragon Warrior 4 for the Nintendo was THE game that aided me in my childhood. The whole series had a hand in my love of the games, but number 4 was my absolute favorite.

For the whole series, it helped me how to read and understand different concepts. For example, I learned the difference between a healing spell and an attacking spell. It also taught me strategy, such as always have some sort of healer in the party is important, unless I want to be playing healer. I did not learn any advanced strategies until I was older and learned of what "weaknesses" and "resistances" were.

This is the game series that led me into liking stories and themes of magic and medieval eras, as well as liking RPGs in general. Heck, it is a big factor in how I started liking Pokémon since they both used menu based combat.

As for WHY Dragon Warrior 4 in particular, it was a game that set you up with MANY party members at one time (up to 9 in the final part of the game). Of those party members, it gave you 2 different style of healers (one had attack magic and a sacrificial revive-all spell, the other had better buffs and a simple guaranteed revive spell), 2 different styles of wizards (one was more of a support mage while the other was much more offensive; they also both had different elements), 3 different styles of fighters (a slightly fragile but fast critical hitter, a durable yet slow tank type, and an in-between that had wacky skills that sometimes popped up), and then you, the hero.

You were set up with these people, given balanced parties throughout the game (though there were some challenging times without a balanced party), so all you had to do was figure out how to use them. In the final chapter of the game, you could no longer control any of your party mates, but guide them with strategies such as going full offensive or focusing on healing. For a beginner, I loved this, though I did grow irritated when some characters would constantly use failing spells. Still, the game was made easier for me to play, even if I had to rely a bit much on the artificial intelligence. Also, before I understood how AI worked, I kind of felt as if the characters were real people; they made mistakes just like I did!

Definitely have to go with Super Mario Bro. 1 and 3, along with Chrono Trigger, several Zelda games, and dragonquest. I could name several more if only I could remember the names.

My favourite games I played growing up are Super Mario World, Pokemon Emerald, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I had played Super Mario World a ton back when I was really young, around 4-8 years old, and have beaten it over a dozen times. Pokemon Sapphire was my first Pokemon game, but I'd say Emerald is better, if anything for the Battle Frontier. The Battle Frontier in Emerald is my favourite Battle Frontier out of all the Pokemon games. I also liked that you could travel underwater. I also liked the region, more specifically Fortree City, Pacifidlog City, and Sootopolis City. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one my favourite because it too I had played a ton of one I was young, and I really liked the music and the overworld in it. The boss fights were also really good. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is one my favourites because I really like the levels in the game, like City Escape, Metal Harbour, Green Forest, and Final Rush. I also really liked the music from City Escape and Metal Harbour.

As the above poster have said, there are just too many games to mention but I will mention some of my top favorites of all time.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - I rented this game 3 times from a video rental place and each time I would get closer to beating it.  Then I finally had the money to buy the game and beat it.  I've replayed this game many times.  Beautiful graphics (at the time), memorable music, and gameplay was top notch!

Super Mario World - When I first saw this at my cousin's house, I immediately saw it's vibrant colors and smooth gameplay.  I knew I had to get a super nintendo!

Final Fantasy IV - I was in the 2nd grade when I first played this on my Snes and even though I couldn't read some of the dialogue, I fell in love with the battle system and the storyline.  This was my first taste in RPGs and I haven't looked back since.

and last but not least...

Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior - My obsession with fighting games started when I was very young and even though I wasn't the best, I always loved how different each character was from each other.  So many different fighting styles and knowing that one of them fit me well was the draw for me.
