I just...couldn't stay away. Now I feel ashamed because...I love this game more than any other game. Yes, this is my favorite game ever. And I only want to sing it's praises JUST this one time. The game of my childhood AND one I STILL play to this day. Where to begin...

Megaman legends is a game that has sort of a story in it's very existence. First of all, yes I know this particular version I'm reviewing is megaman 64 but it's really a port of megaman legends. There's nothing different. But this game is sort of stuck in a stalemate between being well known and forgotten. It was the first megaman game to be brought into the 3d universe and how sad it was that this was too far fetched for most people. The fan base that grew with this game was small compared to the rest of megaman but it was strong and dedicated. Anybody who's played this game most likely shares my sentiments. But I think I can take it a bit further. Here's the deal with this game.

Story: The entire setting of megaman legends from the get go is rather amazing. While the game has it's own story to play through, there are many instances where a bigger world is pictured and referenced. Possibly the strongest point to this game is this one aspect. The sheer amount of life that can be FELT within everything and everyone. There's nearly limitless room for speculation and many little comfy details allow for a level of immersion that's intensely rare these days. You really feel the world that the N64 is supposed to create. That video games create.

Your heart-warmed eyes are first greeted to the scene of the main character whom you play as. Megaman Volnutt. A young digger found and raised by Barrel Caskett, grandfather of Roll Casket, your mechanic and the one who named you after her favorite fictional hero. Now, excuse me and my interruptions once more but this right here is one of those details. The very fact that a character fictional to us to also fictional to them nails another board on the bridge between the game world and the real world and brings us a step closer to the characters we play. Anyways. Your journey starts in a dark, mechanical tower as Megaman narrowly escapes an over-the-top and rather comical death trap set to protect a large refractor they've been searching for;

A crystal of varying size and color containing large amounts of energy that are used to power machines, seeing as you live on a flying ship you can see why they're important. The very first minutes of the game are utilized escaping this dungeon by battling through the reaverbots, mysterious and dangerous mechaniloids taking residence in ruins to protect the relics hidden within. These machines, by just existing, create a great level of depth and intrigue in the in-game history and potential. They come in any number of sizes and shapes as though they adapt to their surroundings. Curious for machines.

After (thinking you) defeated the boss reaverbot of the tower, you fall off the entire thing and are saved at the last minute by Roll who brought your ship, the flutter, around just in time. With a mocking wave, you're off. The victory is short however as the engine of your ship goes haywire, your power source malfunctioning, and you find yourself crash landing on a nearby island called Kattleox. With no other choice remaining, you take residency on this island and search it's many ruins for refractors and relics to repair your ship and further your adventure, as well as your own goals, as well as take an interest in a great mystery beneath the island. With pirates tailing you around and increased activity of reaverbots building up the suspense of the once peaceful island, Megaman is getting into more than he bargained for. But what's really beneath the island?

Did I make it sound fun? I hope I did. Some people would say the game doesn't play half as awesomely as I described it but I had to have gotten this inspiration somewhere! Now that you're caught up on the events, how would you like to know how the game plays?

Gameplay: Megaman legends has one thing about it that bugs people. How the game plays. I say they're crazy. Megaman legends is complex in this category though. For the most part it's all in how much faith you can have in it and how much you're willing not to give up on it. I personally love the controls because they give you a beautiful thing. Complete and utter control.

You are the one who decides everything from where exactly the camera is pointing to where Megaman is firing to HOW he moves. You're given three ways to move. You can turn in place which makes you a stationary target and centers the battlefield around you. This allows you to survey the area around you and be precise while tasking you with managing multiple targets at once. It's not as bad as it sounds really. The most unlikely scenario however. While you're stationary, you are able to lock on to enemies which makes you more accurate. You can only lock onto one enemy at a time.

You can move freely in any direction while the camera stays focused in one. Whenever you stop moving, megaman will re-adjust himself to look in the same direction as the camera. You can turn the camera while doing this and re-center it around Mega but it's unnecessary as it's actually more helpful to have the camera in one place. This allows you to keep a frame on your target(s) while navigating, albeit blindly, the area around them. When you are doing this, you are able to attack so long as you are running within a 180 degree radius. Which is fancy talk for if you're running left and right around or straight forward at your target. You won't be able to shoot if your back is facing them. This is also helpful if there AREN'T enemies as far as you can see but you want to be cautious.

The third way to move is strafing. Hitting L or R will automatically make Mega run left or right which is very important for all scenarios. While strafing, you can always fire and your shots will fly towards the center of the camera at the moment. You can turn while strafing which lets you move in a circle motion around your enemies which allows you to keep a steady aim on them while on the move. Simple, yet effective.

There are also a few special movements you can do. Little things that add a lot of extra control. You can perform a dodge roll which lets you quickly evade to the left or the right. During this dodge roll, you have a quick frame of invincibility which can be used to save you from countless attacks. A very important feature to learn.

The second is Sidling. You can make megaman do a very small slide left or right which can be very important for long range precision instead of trying to run back and forth obnoxiously. The third action is the ability to turn 180 degrees quickly. You can completely reverse the camera and the direction megaman is facing to have control of the full 360 degrees around you. Like I said, this game is all about control.

I know that took a long time and a lot of space but that's really the biggest thing about Megaman legends' gameplay that I wanted to go into. Just about any complaint people can have with the game will most likely revolve around the concept of MOVING...well, maybe that's not entirely true. There is one more 'problem'...

Difficulty: I know it's sudden to bring this up but this will be quick. Megaman legends is sadly a very easy game. Even on hard mode, while it is still a challenge and all it can be easily nullified by the insane amount of control you have compared to the enemies. But somehow, and this might just be me, but I think that in itself is an UPSIDE. The game really shows you the effects of your skill and precision with the controls. As long as you ignore how you can circle strafe just about anything...moving on!

Graphics: Okay, so it's a 64 bit game and there's not a lot to say in that regard but I'd like to credit this game on a few things they did. First of all, the game has pretty and colorful textures on just about everything. It gives personality to all the people and enemies and it can be a bit cute as well. If you can get past the fact that it's somewhat anime-styled.

The second thing I want to say about the graphics, and this isn't even really a graphics thing but a modeling thing, is how beautifully they did with the interactivity of the people and environments. You are most definitely not the only thing up and at 'em. This is another of those life-giving details. Megaman legends was possibly even ahead of it's time! There are any number of things moving around and doing things other than you and with how open and alive the game already feels, this can even make the game feel epic with almost breathing enemies all around you or a single enemy facing you down or a giant machine nearly off in the distance for you to topple! It's really hard to explain, but with an open mind you can easily see what I'm talking about in the game itself. Give it a try!

Sound: Now this is both a slightly controversial detail, and a very important detail. It's controversial because there is one difference between the N64 version of this game and the PS1 version. The voice quality on the PS1 version was a good bit better than on the N64 version and the music was a bit faster. However, I think these are both negligible details. Just though it was worth mentioning.

Really what I want to say about the sound is that it's like no other game before or after. The music is phenomenal and all the tracks are practically orchestrated. The music has a style you can only recognize in megaman legends but these styles are often inspired by great classical tracks. The final boss theme is Little Fugue in G Minor. That's class right there. The music is in a genre of it's own really and beautiful tracks they are. The soundtrack is almost worth a platinum release. For me anyways.

The sound effects are LITERALLY nothing I've heard in almost any media. Unique, satisfying, exhilarating and fitting to say the least! It's as simple as that.

The voices COULD have used a little work in some areas but at the same time in others they can be perfect! I suppose it's all in the actors you hire but I always love listening to this game.

Depth: Have you ever thought Zelda was the leading side-quest simulator? Maybe. But let's introduce contender number one. Legends one that is! Yes, Megaman legends has side-quests. Optional, lengthy, though actually surprisingly few. They're all very entertaining though and are more than just Get X for Y and the like. Bringing gosh darned hope to a young girl in the hospital for Christ's sake! Pardon my language...

But other than the side-quests, let it be known that Megaman legends once more wants you to be the leader here. Where you'll find most of your new special items and secrets will be various hidden rooms around dungeons but also in the big ruin. The big ruin is just what it sounds like, a free-roaming ruin you can enter that's connected to many places all over the island. There are many reaverbots and even more treasures waiting down there if you're willing to risk it. And there's even a sense of progression as points you may not access early on are unlocked as you obtain a certain weapon. I mean a single certain weapon really but nevertheless!

Addictiveness: There are at least 10, 20 save file locations or so for megaman legends. I've already looped around them all from how many times I've taken it upon myself to play this game. Call me crazy, but there's an addictiveness to this game that comes entirely on how truly fun it is just to play it. Me? Well the difficulty and length of the game add up just nicely enough for me to still have it in my N64. I hope it's the same for you guys.

Overall: As you can see, I am a huge fan of this game and it's sequel. I nearly cried when the third game was cancelled! But I will continue to remain faithful and with all the things I've said here, I hope you see why, I hope you might feel the same, or at least understand. This is a great game with nearly everything balanced out perfectly. It's the kind of game you have to go into with more than the intent to beat it. You have to want to 'play' it. Don't look towards the goal. Watch the road before you. They say the point of the adventure is not the destination, but the journey itself. Let's hope when they make another Legends game that they, that everyone remembers this.

And to be perfectly honest....

iN008 : No person can make any argument longer than 100 words by himself it seems? I'm sorry but you'll find no other place on the Internet with this review. The only excuse I have for why it's three posts is that long reviews are encouraged and this wasn't far above the 2000 mark. Plus when I'm writing these I'm not exactly given a grid to show me each milestone mark of the thread that will be created for the review I wrote, whether I want there to be a thread or not. Your 'criticism' is well appreciated...

Dewybmt : Nice review. I enjoyed the detail you went into. It's rare to see reviews this extensive around here these days. Especially with the TDv going on.

As far as the game itself goes it was a decent game. No 10/10 by any means, but then again I personally feel that few games deserve that sort of score. I do understand how nostalgia can kinda cloud your perspective though. It has happened to me for a ton of games so I totally can relate.

Keep up the great work on the reviews! The only thing that I think would help it is to format the categories by bolding them or underlining them to make it a little easier to see. Other than that, it's great.

mourinhosgum : Thank you for the encouragement! Admittedly at first I thought I had done something wrong. I'm usually cautious about doing things for the first time, ha. But seeing as I plan to look around this place a lot more I can guarantee I'll keep up the good work. I only wish I knew about this place sooner!

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
