On this day 20 years ago, a game was released that would forever change gaming, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic 2 was released November 24, 1992 (In America anyway). The release date was dubbed "Sonic 2's Day" (It was released on a Tuesday) and since then, it has sold over 6 million copies. This game also introduced a staple character in the series, Miles Prower (I see what you did there), more commonly known as Tails. In this game, he just follows you around, but usually can't keep up and flies in every 10 seconds. This game is also very special to me as it is one of the first video games I ever played along with Super Mario World. This game made me an instant Sonic fan and I've been one my entire life, through the good times and the bad, Sonic is just the series that I always come back to for nostalgia. But enough about my personal history, let's wrap up Sonic 2 Month and talk about why I think this is the best video game I've ever played.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are some of the best on the Genesis, but I kind of expect that because after all, Sonic IS Sega's mascot. The sprites in this game are the best in the classic games in my opinion and the level art is just amazing. The backgrounds are done really well and really fit in with their respective levels. The animations are done really well, the only bad thing about that is there aren't many cutscenes to show them off. I keep forgetting to mention this, but I always get a little kick out of Eggman's look every time you hit him. It almost looks like he's saying "Why are you doing this to me?" or something like that. Anyway, let's continue with this review, shall we?

Sound
The soundtrack for this game is probably my favorite out of the entire series. It's the only video game soundtrack that I've downloaded the entirety of. I love every second of this game's musical pieces. From the "SEGA!!!" chant at the beginning to the ending credits, every piece is just really good to listen to. The music in this game, especially Emerald Hill Zone, just gives me a rush of nostalgia that almost no other game can. While Green Hill Zone may be the "nostalgia starter" for most fans, Emerald Hill is mine. There's just something about the entire soundtrack that screams "Sonic" for me, Even the little jingles like the Invincibility or Level Clear jingle (I really think they need to bring back this Level Clear theme for future games, just saying.) are pretty good. I guess I should move on before I get carried away and make this section the longest review section in history.

Addictiveness
This game is very addicting. I usually come back to it once a week because it's just that good. The different paths you can take, speed run attempts, exploration, you name it, you can do it (As long as it relates to the game itself anyway). I'm always taking a new path through every level, sometimes I find secrets I didn't even think were on the paths I was already taking. I love coming back to this game because I know I'm always going to find something new. Sometimes I find glitches, like one where I have already gotten Super Sonic, then pull a Sonic 1 and attempt to jump over to goal sign with 50+ rings, it literally makes it impossible to continue, at least on my actual Genesis cartridge, I don't think it works on this site. There's a lot of other things too, but we'll save them for the Depth section.

Story
Well, you could basically take Sonic 1's story, slap Tails in occasionally and say that's Sonic 2's story, but I'm going to summarize the story from the manual anyway. Why? Because I can! Here we go; Ever since he was a baby, Tails dreamed of being able to run like Sonic, and eventually, he succeeded, but Eggman has appeared once again, kidnapping Sonic and Tails' friends and turning them into robots. It seemed that Eggman had everything in his grasp. Everything except the 7 Chaos Emeralds, which, if gathered, could give Eggman all the power he needs to control the world...forever. It's up to Sonic and Tails to find the Chaos Emeralds before Eggman and foil his evil plans once again. Once again, the story here isn't too in depth, but it does give you enough to understand Sonic and Tails' motivation. There are a few cutscenes near the end of the game that show a little bit and show how Sonic ends up in space for the final fight.

Depth
This game has tons of secrets, new pathways, secret monitors, hidden checkpoints, etc. There are a grand total of 11 Zones in this game, each with 2 Acts instead of 3 from the first game (There are a few exceptions). The levels are; Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Casino Night, Hill Top, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, Metropolis (3 Acts), Sky Chase (1 Act), Wing Fortress (1 Act), and Death Egg (1 Act, final 2 bosses are here). If there's one thing I can say about this Sonic game compared to any other, it's that I don't hate any of them. Sonic 1 had Labyrinth Zone, Sonic 3 had Carnival Night Zone, and Sonic & Knuckles had Sandopolis. Here, I don't find one Zone that I don't look forward to. I also think this game has exactly the right amount of levels. I don't find it too long or short. There are also Special Stages in this game, but instead of jumping into a giant ring at the end of an Act, you simply collect 50 rings, find a checkpoint, and jump into the ring of stars on the top. I will say this right now, I actually like Sonic 2's Special Stages out of all the other games. I think these are the most "Sonic-like" Special Stages in the games. To complete a Special Stage, simply nab the amount of rings for each of the 3 sections, and the Emerald is yours. Collect all 7 and you can transform into Super Sonic, but I'll get into that a little bit later.

Difficulty
Now, for me, who has been playing this game since he was only 4 or 5, this game is pretty easy to me. Except maybe for the final 2 bosses, where you have no rings. For first time players, yes this game will be a little difficult, especially Chemical Plant Zone Act 2. But after playing it for so long, it's almost like a walk in the park for me. Regardless, I still have fun playing this game. Believe me, I would rather have a short and pretty easy game than one that's ridiculously hard and takes years to beat. Metropolis Zone could also be considered difficult, I guess. Mostly because of enemy placements, but once you figure out where they are, you can defeat them easily. Well, that's it for that, on to the most important aspect of ANY game.

Gameplay/Controls
This game is the best controlling game in the 2D Sonic library, to me anyway. This game controls about the same as the other 2D games, but with a few minor changes to physics. The controls for this game are really simple, the D-pad moves you left and right and allows you to look up and down. There is one new move in this game that would become a trademark move for Sonic, the Super Sonic Spin Dash, that's what the manual calls it, everyone else simply calls it the Spin Dash. How do you perform this Spin Dash? By holding down and mashing any or all of the buttons repeatedly, then releasing down for a burst of speed. This move makes traversing through levels a lot easier and faster, but if you wanna just roll, you can simply press down while running. Now, remember I was talking about Super Sonic a little while ago? Here's how you use him. Once you have the 7 Chaos Emeralds, simply collect 50 rings, then jump and you'll become Super Saiyan...I mean Sonic, Super Sonic. As Super Sonic, you are invincible, can jump higher, and run faster. The downside? Well, it is somewhat difficult to control, especially if you're trying to do precise platforming. Also, you consume rings at a rate of about 1 ring per second, but you can collect more rings to keep Super Sonic for as long as possible. Everything else is pretty much the same.

Overall, I think Sonic 2 is a must-have for any gamer and ANY Sonic fan. To me, it's the closest to perfect any video game will ever get. The game looks nice, the music is great, and it controls really well. Something I very highly recommend you play if you haven't already. With all of this being said, I give this game a 10 out of 10, the only perfect 10 I will probably ever give a game. Well, that's it for Sonic 2 Month, join me next month for Rage Month, where I review the games you should not play during the holidays. I rage so you won't have to. I really hope you enjoyed this month and I hope to see you again soon. 'Till then, peace out!
