I wonder how many quarters I spent on this as a child??? I would guess a couple of hundred! Seeing this game at my local arcade was a shock in itself, mostly
because it combined my love of Marvel comics and my enjoyment of
fighting games and it produced a great tag team based game with fast
paced combos. This game opened up a larger array of characters since it did not focus
solely on the X-Men, but rather the Marvel universe. That meant fans of
Captain America had a chance to be the WWII icon and “web-heads” got to
use Spiderman’s agility. The game also had Sakura and the laughably bad character Dan. In fact, I could remember
selecting Dan on accident and being extremely amused at the weakness of
his hadouken. I didn’t realize at the time that he was more of a joke
‘bragging rights’ character than a serious contender. Still, Dan allowed
for a certain amount of cockiness since a defeat at the hands of Dan
meant that your opponent was the joke. But what really interested me was the complexity of combos and hyper combos. I was used to simple combos, but this had air juggling combos, two different types of hyper combos per
character and a wide selection of fighters that would mean a different
approach for each player. Anyway this is a great game that brought back a lot of old memories of Friday and Saturday nights at the mall. The graphics are great (considering the time this came out) and the sound is addictive and just perfect for the game.
