I have found that over the years, Final Fantasy games have strayed far from the path that has come to be renowned around the world, the old spells like Curaja and Osmose and their over the top graphics for the age. The modern games hardly even follow the same style, I definitely prefer the Retro games, IX and below. X and above clearly showed where they had begun to stray from the path

In my view Final Fantasy will always be retro.  The newer ones or the modern ones are only and extension to the already great series.  Sure the upgrades to graphics and actions have change but that game feeling will never change.

Depends which ones you call retro, and which ones modern.

For me, retro is anything before the PS2 (as it should be), which includes 7, 8, and 9.

For me, I have to say retro Final Fantasy games are far better. Of my favorite 5 Final Fantasy games, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are probably my favorites. In no order mind.

The only modern game in my top 5 is 12, which most people seemed to dislike for some reason.

Where did they stray? I don't think they "strayed" until 13 honestly. Every game was great until 13. Which was by far the WORST Final Fantasy ever.

I think it's savable though. Let's wait.

I'd go with Retro. 3, 5, and 6 were especially good. Once they went 3D, they started to lose it a bit. 7 was a less-interesting rehash of 6... 8 was at least interesting. 9 tried too hard to be "classic", 10 was bleh... 11 was MMO, 12 was pretty good, and I haven't even gotten to anything newer.

So of the modern FF games, 12 is the only REAL good one.

I'm going Retro but not too far. 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 in my opinion were some of best FF games I've played. I've never played 12 but I want to and 11 even thou its an MMO it didn't look that bad. Can't wait to play the remake of 10

Retro Final Fantasies were far better in my opinion.

I think most people agree anything before the PS2 to be considered retro.

Final Fantasy IX is personally my favorite of the entire series; VI coming to a very close second. Their stories to me were just a work of art in my honest opinion.

The new Final Fantasies don't seem to just have that kind of magic anymore. And that's around the time where Squaresoft became Squarenix it seems. :l

IX was the most modern version I played after X, XII and XII-2, XIII just tried to hard to play open action and just overall ruined it for me.

I love to grind and that classic victory music is missing in the newer games TT_TT I love all the old spells and having to ration your MP for the big boss battles... that don't take 3 hours to complete X_x on the other hand, I agree with the better polygonal graphics and the expansion of the background... though the freely visible enemies, while an interesting concept, fell short of expectations

legacyme3: Many people think FF12 is bad because they went from the turn-based battles to everything happening at once and the characters running around during the battle.

I think that FF7 and 8 are both over-hyped by fanboys as the best in the series. I think that FF9 is one of the best simply because it goes back to delineating characters in the game, with each one being good at something. Also learning skills and having to think about what will go onto a character given the situation just places emphasis on strategy.

FF13 is just a piece of tripe. What kind of FF has no exploration at all? FF13 is just cutscene to combat to more movies.
