As you are all aware, Final Fantasy XIII is getting its third and final installment in the Lightning Trilogy, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. With an open world, the ability to move Lightning in battle, and a Majora's Mask-like 13 days system, Lightning Returns looks like it could redeem the original XIII like XIII-2 allegedly did (Sorry, I haven't played XIII-2 yet, but I hear it's better than XIII-1).

All this talk about Lightning is great, but does anybody remember this guy back in 2006?

Hey, who's that guy with that cool looking sword?

It's Noctis, from the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Versus was announced back in 2006 and was being produced by Tetsuya Nomura (You know, the guy who made Kingdom Hearts).  Obviously, this game is taking a long time to get made. and with only a few trailers released, for the past 6 years, very little is known about this game.

From what we know, this game will play like a souped up version of one  of the Kingdom Hearts games. It's an action RPG, so that means while you're hacking and slashing, you'll also be doing some RPG type things, like managing your stats, using MP to cast spells, gaining experience points, etc. If you look at a high quality screen shot, you will notice how much stuff is on your HUD. You've got MP, an EX bar for EX Skills (which are unknown as of right now.), and you also have a meter next to your health and I'm not exactly sure what it is supposed to be used for. Noctis can also do flippy stunts like in Kingdom Hearts 3D, and you can even do cool things like hijack tanks and mechs.

But in addition to playing as Noctis, you can also play as his buddies as well. One of them is an expert in firearms, so you play with him like you would a third person shooter.

Yeah, that explosion over there? That monster? Those graphics? All actual gameplay.

The reason the game is taking so long is because it is insanely ambitious. Nearly all of the cutscenes will be interactive and transition seamlessly, similar to cutscenes in a lot of FPSes. For example, Noctis is in some building and all of a sudden an airplane crashes into the building, this scene will play out with the player still in control. Even flashback scenes will be this way. This process takes a long time, and if they find it too difficult to make a cutscene interactive, they'll have an FMV to tell the story, but the gameplay to FMV ratio will be 7:3, so don't worry guys, this is no Metal Gear Solid 4. The world maps are also not going to be small maps with tiny avatars of you character moving around, the map will be large, and it will be full scale. The world's so big, you'll need to drive cars and take airships to easily get from place to place, it's like traveling in real life (except that you won't need to wait a few hours to go to another continent.)

The plot is about Noctis and friends trying to recover the last crystal, which had recently been stolen by an opposing nation. The game is said to be way more realistc and mature than any previous FF. Nomura says he wants the characters to not be based on Anime cliches (unlike *cough* Final Fantasy XIII *cough*) and will be more like real people. Noctis himself will not be the "Cloud Strife Character" (Unlike *cough* Lightning *cough*), he will not be the 'emo' hero like Squall who talks in ellipsis, and he won't be a generic cool guy "badass" character.

Now this is pretty much all we know about this currently PS3-exclusive title. At one point the game was thought to be cancelled, but this has since been confirmed false.

Another game you should know about is Final Fantasy Type-0. Originally called Final Fantasy Agito XIII, this game's development was at first planned for mobile phones but then moved to the PSP. Yes, unlike Versus, this game did get released last year- but only in Japan.

The battles in this game similar to Crisis Core, only party based, and in order to create an insanely fast version of ATB, actions are mapped to face buttons rather than in menus, there's also Movement canceling for those who hate being stuck in the air and vulnerable because Sora wants to keep slashing the air until he goes into his trinity combo finisher. You select missions with different goals and even sub objectives.

There's also this Altocrystarium thing that allows you to upgrade certain types of magic in different perimeters such as power and range. there's also different weapon types you can use as well, Fire SHG (shotgun) is fire magic that acts as if it were a shotgun.

There are also up to fourteen playable characters to play as with their own weapons and fighting style.

The world map is also used for more than just going from place to place. Now there is an Real Time Strategy type element to it. You can order troops to capture bases on the world map and fight in airship battles, it's pretty cool.

Class Zero ready to kick some butt.

The plot of the game is that there are four nations, each with a different crystal. These nations live peacefully until the Milites Empire decided to go and try to conquer the other nations. They have used their Byakko Crystal with the power of weapons to conquer two of the nations, and now they are coming for Suzaku Fiefdom of Rubrum.
But what they don't know is that a team of skilled warriors being trained in  Rubrum's Academy of Magic know as Class Zero has been dispatched to recapture all of the conquered territories and save the crystals!

As stated earlier, this game is currently a Japan Exclusive. S-E has stated they they have plans of a localization, but have not said anything more.

Do you want Type-0 to be released overseas? Do you want to not be kept in the dark about Versus? Well, now's your chance to let your voice be heard..

Project Crystallis is a petition to get more info on FFvXIII and get and actual release of FFType-0 in North America and Europe. Just go to their youtube page at http://www.youtube.com/user/ProjectCrystallis and watch their videos, sign the petition, check out their facebook, tublr, twitter, whatever, and just spread the word in general.

Remember, we're not trying to rush Square to release Versus as an unfinished product, we just want to know more about Noctis. It's been six years, we should know more about this project. We also want Type-0 because it looks like a very good game and the world should have all of the FNC games rather than us westerners getting the Lightning Saga, which is very divisive within the FF fanbase whether or not the games in it are actually good, while Japan get everything else. Please help support Project Crystallis and help bring out these two great games.
