I accidentally cut my middle finger with a knife while cutting a carrot. It is about a half an inch long and it is near the nail of my finger. I put a bandage on to prevent the bleeding and at the end of the day, I checked to see how it looks and it still has the cut, but it's not bleeding. I am freaking out and almost vomited. I want to know if I need to have stitches on it and if I do, is getting them very painful? I am very scared about this.

Well, I'm not a professional medical doctor or anything but if it completely stopped bleeding after a day then it probably doesn't require stitches. However, you should still visit a doctor to examine the depth and severity of the wound. It could be infected or contract one easily.

The pain of stitching is minimal depending on the wounded area. A finger shouldn't hurt. I had stitches on my face and yes it was painful! I could feel every stitch being sewn. Uncomfortable, awkward feeling and burning sensation.

On the bright side, you could always ask to be sedated during the process if it comes to that! Nonetheless, feel better and try not to be so careless with a knife.

Depends on where you get stitched and how they stitch it.

I once got a gash in my chin after an embarassing bus accident. I had to get 3 or 4 stitches in my chin, and I was afraid of getting them.

I was told they'd just apply a certain skin glue instead, so I agreed to it.

Then I found out they put in the stitches without me even feeling it.

It was completely painless. It wasn't even sore the next day.

legacyme3 : That's weird because I also had a gash opened under my chin and had to get stitches for it. That happened to me when I fell down from a steppe hill while riding on my scooter. The impact to my chin really hurt and I had some kind of cord sticking out right after that happened. Never knew what that was. I went to the hospital and I also had some sort of skin glue applied to my chin and the 5 stitches I got did not hurt at all.

So yeah it does depend on how you are being stitched. Hopefully that cut is not deep enough to need staples.
