I like Chrono Trigger (SNES), Earthbound (SNES), Final Fantasy V (originally for the Japanese SNES), Final Fantasy VI (SNES), Phantasy Star (Sega Master System), Phantasy Star III (Genesis), Phantasy Star IV (Genesis), and Lunar 1 and 2 (Sega CD and PSX versions) all equally.
-Graphics are always important, but they must be revolutionary for the console it's on.
-A killer soundtrack helps too; I will never forgive Sega for taking out the FM chip for the American and European releases of Phantasy Star.
-The storyline is also important, as it should engage the gamer by involving them in the actual universe portrayed.
-The level up system shouldn't be too weird. Games like Final Fantasy IIj and Chrono Cross are absolutely confusing for me. I like a standard  "Level up!" thing going on. Stuff like the job system in FFV or license points in FFXII don't bother me that much; that's cuz I'm in direct control of the character's progress as for how to utilize what is gained.
-Finally, as a personal preference, but also likely for most other gamers, it's shouldn't be a total level cruncher. I've finished Dragon Warrior, but I hated almost every second of it. Final Fantasy was also a bit like that, but the storyline and plot development helped in overshadowing this flaw.

Personally, I like a video game to have good graphics and clearly defined goals.  I am partial to Zelda stories because they also have a nice selection of "side quests" to do when the dungeons get too tedious.  I have Final Fantasy 8 and 9 for the PS1 and play them, too.  I have ChronoCross as well and REALLY like that game.  ChronoCross has great graphics and the story has several endings.  There is the added challenge of figuring out how to get characters to join you so that you can use them in battles.  And, with ChronoCross, once you beat the game, there is an added bonus of being able to fast-forward through some of the things.  I do like games where there are puzzles to solve.  I like the Tomb Raider series and currently have Tomb Raider 3 that I can play on the old PS1.
I bought a gamepad today because I was getting frustrated using the keyboard to play games designed for joysticks and am feeling a lot better about the Zelda Ocarina of Time game I'm playing through.
Another thing that a video game MUST have to be good is an addictive quality that keeps you interested.  Zelda does that.  While I lose track of time while playing Zelda, it is designed to let you save easily and I like that.
Like a car, video games are personal choices.  What appeals to one may not appeal to another.  If a 56 year old man can enjoy a video game, why not anyone?

In my opinion, a good game would be ones that gives entertainment to consumers. It should be tested and should not have flaws. It should contain Easter eggs for people who like to discover them. Its storyline must be well thought out, give characters unique personality, and into the subject. That's what I would describe as a good game.

For me...

A story. It means everything. If a game doesn't have a story, I can't get involved in it unless it's a type of game that doesn't have one (like a sports game.)

After that, it has to be simple controls. I don't care how complicated it can get beyond the basic level, I'll explore that if I feel like it, but basic controls are a must.

And finally, I guess I need to be able to tell where I'm going. I've played a lot of games where it was so dark I had to max out the brightness on my TV. I hate that.

There are a multitude of things that define a good game, even if everyone has different views on what a good game is. Any good game should aspire to have at least some of these specific elements.

Controls: They can make or break a game. HD graphics and sophisticated programming mean little and less if you have trouble simply moving forward or looking in the correct direction.

Memorable characters: People that leave an impact on you, weather it was good or bad. Some characters outright define the games they are based in and even, with the help of their fans, transcend them.

Comprehend able and attention grasping plot: If the story is full of holes, confusing, or just plain boring then some games are easily lost to the fabric of history. Others, however, give the player a real drive to press on just to find out what will happen next. A good story can really immerse you and make the player feel like they're part of the game. Fear, excitement, joy, and sorrow are all expressions that can be conveyed through good storyboard.

Aesthetics: Because ugly games apparently don't sell. Yes, as we move into the future, gamers will always have the desire for clearer, more defined graphics in games. If the animation is solid, the characters well designed, and the background fits into the scene then a game will be visually pleasing for all. (On a side not, I'd just like to state my own personal opinion on the matter. Looks aren't everything. You can make a game look pretty, but if the game-play/controls are awful then that artistic talent was all for naught)

Music: Few people appreciate how much music can add to the game.  It makes action scenes more dynamic, a sad twist of fate into an outright tragedy, and the chase all the more frantic! It also gives one a better recollection of the games they have played, even if the story or characters don't stand out the music can still be memorable. Weather it gets you pumped up or tugs on your heart strings, there is no denying that music can make a good game better.

Replay Value: Last, but certainly not least. This aspect can be taken for granted, especially with today's modern outlook on games. What makes a game really, truly good is last-ability.  A lot of retro games have managed to hold onto this trait, making them priceless gems in the gaming community. Some games would reward you for completion with a new character, or perhaps a new mode of play. Was it good, but you think it could be more challenging? up the difficulty and really push yourself to go through it all again with a whole new level of frustration and adrenaline. With the number of sandbox RPGs out there it wouldn't be surprising for someone to start a new game and play it through as a different character type, it really changes the way players maneuver through the game. Or, perhaps, the game was just so much fun you want to play it again? whatever the reason, if you can pick it up and play it again then it must have been good, right?

A good game for me would be the game-play, coherent audio, (sometimes) storyline, and decent graphics.
I'm a fan of many types of games, such as racing, typical beat em' up, adventure, shooting, etc. If it captures my attention, I'll love it.

A great video game is a seamless experience. My best example is Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES. Every aspect of the game comes together to create an experience: the music, the sounds, the graphics and atmosphere, even the animation. The controls, everything. You forget you're playing a game and you're sucked into a different world for an hour or two.

A good video game to me is one with a great storyline and game play. Graphics alone do not make a game good, some people are suckers for nice graphics. I refuse to get a game only for that reason.

A good game for me would be...
-Graphics. I'd like to see some good settings, characters etc.
-Soundtrack. Soundtrack is an important one for me. It makes the game
enjoyable and you could have a beat to it while playing.
-Game play. It'd be good if there was fun game play and enjoyable to play.
Those are the three main factors for me.

Good games are built upon a strong foundation made up of the simplest version of the gameplay mechanics, art style, themes, and goals related to the overall game design. I love games that start out simple but add layers throughout in such a way that you don't even realize that you are growing at all. Graphics are only important if they serve the overall style and theme that the game is trying to convey i.e. I despise graphics for graphics sake. The story can also be an important factor but the game needs to be able to support itself without it or designed with all other aspects side by side. The same goes for Music as well.

Many modern Indie games are doing this and building gameplay that serves metaphorical functions to the overall game.

A good video game is a game with good graphics, a good story line and that don't end up with the person you most like to die. its also a game that you can beat a million times and never get tired of playing it. But a good game must come with a good game system.
