Hey guys,Today is special.Today is the day I turn 12 and to celebrate this is going to be my 12th official Review!I want to bring you guys a review that got cancelled due to unknown reasons and that review is the Penny Racers 64 review.It was one of my longest reviews and had my most effort put into it back then.Going from over 650 words in the review and the it had to be done twice.Thanks to this notepad idea I promise this cancellation process will never happen again.Now Penny Racers 64 was a game released for the N64 in 1998.It was the first American release game we got and the first in America to be on a Nintendo console.The game was from a franchise called ChoroQ in Japan that had a toy line of small toy cars that started in 19.After it's popularity got big they started making video games for it and the first one was named ChoroQ for the MSX.When it came to America years later it was called Penny racers from how you can put pennies on the back of the small cars and it would do a wheelie.While the N64 game wasn't as good as the PlayStation titles it was still a pretty good game.Just to warn you before we get into the review is that there's a glitch when you play on emulators that the car will keep flipping due to the sensitive keyboard(The game thinks you are turning way to much on the emulator),But don't worry this has been fixed on vizzed so you can play regularly now.Now on to the review!
Graphics:The graphics look very cartoonish and fit the style pretty well.It really uses the N64 to it's power and it really matches well with the background.Everythings just so colorful and vibrant.{9}
Sound:The sound is good.I think it sticks with the environment and some of it is pretty catchy.Not all of it is special exactly,but I think it fits.{7}
Addictiveness:The game has a ton to keep you coming back!First you have the main game you to complete,The unlockable items which I will get into later,The track editor,Time trial,and the 4-player mutiplayer.Enough said.{8}
Story:Nope.Just how many times am I going to put story in a racing game?A lot.{None}
Depth:Time to talk about the unlockables!There is a total of 114 parts.The only way to get these parts is by racing.........You see the game uses a special part switching system.The way it works is by this:If you get in 1st,2nd,or 3rd place you had a chance to steal one of the racers who got in 4th,5th or 6th.You can exchange the racer for nothing or a part you didn't want.I think this adds some depth and originality to the game.Here are the parts.
Car Body types-14
Engine types-25
Tire variations-12
Brake types-9
Suspension styles-10
Armor types-8
Extra Parts-21
Special weapon items-15
Oh yeah the score is {10}
Difficulty:It's very hard to jump into this game and have fun for one reason.The AI.This game has Rubber band AI.If you don't know what that means I'll tell you.It's programmed in most racing games when the player gets in first the other racers will try to catch up to get to you No Matter What.The AI was toned down in the sequel,but back to the game we're talking about.Like all games in the series you start off with some and I have to say it crappy parts in the game.So you might have to play the same track over and over and over again,But when you do get that parts curve you'll be ready to race.{8}
Overall
enny Racers 64 was a very fun experience and still held up it's credit it desevres.However the game faded into obscurity and was never heard of again.About the PlayStation version If you wanted a English version of the PlayStation version it does exist a translated version that was sold in Europe,but good luck trying to find a version of the game because it's really that rare.As for this game it's not really rare at all.I try it if you're a fan of the series or a fan of racing games.This game gets
a 7.5 out of 8
