Admittedly, this will be a short review, as I need to go to bed and I'm new here.
Sonic 3D would have been much more enjoyable in the time where any game could add the moniker "3D" and be special.
There are numerous aspects of the core Sonic series that were transferred over for Sonic 3D, but not all in exactly the same way. There are still bonus stages that require 50 rings to enter, however, now they can be entered by finding side characters that stand around in somewhat hidden portions of the map. You still rescue fellow forest creatures when you destroy enemy robots, but now they are integral to continuing the level as you must collect them and ring them with you to the exit.
Of course, you can still speed charge, jump, and move faster than you can dodge. Movement is my chief complaint actually. Perhaps when this first came out, audiences were sufficiently dazzled by the graphics and novel pseudo-3D environment to overlook the frequently sluggish and occasionally too speedy movement. What I mean is that Sonic controls like a person wearing 3 year old Converse Chuck Taylors on ice; no tread and a slippery surface. Once you get moving in a direction, it is very difficult to stop and avoid sliding into nearby objects. In this videogame, that means, "Oh, I see a badnick. I'd better not run straight into it so I'll push a different direction. NO! Don't just slide straight into it!"
If you're determined to at least give this a fair try as I was, feel free to cheat or look up hints just to make it more palatable. A game controller would be better too, rather than a keyboard.
As always, play on, player! Also, bring back Firefly...
