So, it hasn't been announced by SEGA themselves yet, but Sonic Adventure 2 is getting its own HD release soon (It's about time, too)!

Source: Sonic Retro

It's going to be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and most likely Steam (If we're lucky ). As said in the source for this, its unannounced release date is on October 3rd of this year, but it may change as the news starts getting even more official (Even though it's at the peak already).

Anyways, what're your thoughts on this? I know that pretty much everybody loves this game from the series, but what do you think about having an HD release?

I personally love this move, even though I was hoping for a brand new game soon, rather than a rerelease, but this can be an exception to my hopes .

I don't care about it one way or the other. I like the game, but getting a more graphically beautiful version of the game is completely unneccesary.

Especially if you already own it like I do :/

I just can't justify spending 60 dollars, or hell, even 30 on the same frigging game.

legacyme3 : It's not going to be near THAT much It's going to be about the same as Adventure 1 is on the PS/Xbox/Steam Market. It'd be absurd to rerelease it at a price like that.

legacyme3 : Eh, I'd say that they priced it pretty right upon release, since it wasn't an EXACT copy for each level Especially considering the fact they switched from 2D to 3D, Nya~.

And the HD isn't like Sonic Unleashed quality HD, but a simple fix up like they did with Jet Set Radio, which I should point out I haven't bought yet (If it's even out yet, that is).

9. Sonic Rush
8. Sonic Adventure
7. Sonic Unleashed
6. Sonic 1
5. Sonic Colors

prince solaris : Oh, that's actually pretty surprising. And seeing Sonic Colors at number 5 and Sonic Adventure on the list is pretty surprising, since you still don't like Sonic Adventure 2.

If you don't mind, how come you didn't like this game? I personally found this game to be Sega's best Sonic game due to the story, gameplay, etc, so it'd be interesting to hear somebodies opinion when they're against it for once, Nya~.

MegaRevolution1 : Well what I don't like about it the most is the fact that about 70% of the time in that game you're playing as an alternate playstyle (mech shooting and treasure hunting) that has nothing to do with Sonic-like gameplay that Sonic and Shadow's stages have and I don't like that one bit. Now it's true that you do that too in Sonic Adventure 1 but they were much less offensive there since you can play through all of Sonic's story before playing any of the other characters and their playstyles, and they were much less offensive because they had much less levels than Sonic himself did and theirs felt like more of a quick minigame whereas SA2's felt like they dragged on forever and not only that Sonic's gameplay is the main attraction for the game so it bugged me that I was only playing that 30% of the time. Unleashed is arguably just as bad with it as SA2 is but I do like it because it has hub worlds, the atmosphere and pixar-like art style of the game feels so right to me, and I find that even though werehog is really repetitve as well, personally it's better than SA2's alternate playstyles but not by much.

What I don't like about the alternate playstyles in SA2 is how they just felt like they were just there to be there whereas in SA1 their characters were sort of relevant to the story and the levels were much more easygoing. Let's compare, with the mech levels in SA1 they were short quick and arcade-like in nature and the timer gave you a sense of urgency even though I thought it was only a real threat in Gamma's final level. In SA2 they are significantly longer and really just feel very repetitive with nothing really going on until the final Tails level with the artificial chaos, I guess it was alright trying to see how many enemies you can lock on to in a single target but I really hated how much clunkier the controls were compared to Gamma in SA1, I don't see why they would do that. For treasure hunting, in SA1 the levels were short, quick and  fun to explore. In SA2, they could've been interesting except they made the levels like 3 time as huge as before with nothing really going on in them and they butchered the radar so that it can only detect one individual emerald at a time which is pretty counter-intuitive for exploration when you're making the levels huge and lets not forget the cryptic clues that the TV monitors can sometimes give you "on church mountain" Ok I know where that is and I found the emerald, "in between 2 skulls" THERE'S SKULLS EVERYWHERE!!!! so as a result they could drag on longer than a werehog level sometimes. While I'm at it, even though Sonic and Shadow's levels were fun, I found them to be a bit of a step down from SA1's levels because they felt like they were too linear in comparison to some of SA1's where it was all a bit more open and free like Lost World's sections or Sky Deck's last section, and I also didn't like the somesault getting in the way of my spindash. Lack of hubworlds had it's ups and downs I guess but I would've liked one especially since it was already planned for the game.

Now  I will say that SA2 has its share of charm, maybe I am a bit harsh on the game it's really more truthful for me to say that I never liked as much as most others do, but that's not it's fault, I'm just frustrated at these crazy 10-15 SA2 fanboys on the sega forums about a year ago that PM'd me a bunch of death threats for saying I don't think it's as godly as they claimed it is, but what can you do? at least they've been banned since then.

Well there you have it. a response that's not drenched in nostalgia goggles gibberish.

I'd have to agree at least that SA2 isn't as great as I used to think. After playing Generations and more recent 3D sonic games, I'd have to say I do enjoy the direction SEGA decided to take. Game play is much better. I went back to play SA2 on the Dreamcast and quickly saw how the homing attack is anything but. Jump---death. When I first saw the targeting mechanism I thought it was stupid, but I really missed when I went to play SA2 again.

I will say that I don't think SEGA will ever come up with a better story than they had with SA2. It's one of my favorite game story lines in general. Haven't played it, but then in '06 I suppose they thought they'd come up with a new hedgehog every anniversary game, but I'm glad they went with Generations instead.

When you do analyze it, I suppose game play for sonic's friends wan't that great, but I actually enjoyed hunting levels. The thing that's great about the Adventure series and Sonic3&K, in my opinion, is that you can play as the others. I'd like to see them let you play as the others again without completely changing the game (not too big of a fan of heroes, though).

As far as a 3rd Adventure release: Isn't that what Unleashed was? Original title, and actual release in Japan I believe, was Sonic World Adventure. The title theme is "The World Adventure." I'm pretty sure SEGA's ignoring SA3 requests since they've moved on from that. It is good to see that they are still trying to please older fans by trying to polish SA2, though.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle? That's the best Sonic game of all time! Too bad I already have the GameCube version though. It would be cool to have an HD version, but that would be a waste.

TheFadedWarrior : Yes, SA2B just has a few added features though. The thing that saddens me though is the fact you referred to the GameCube version instead of the original, Nya~.

Anyways, SEGA is going to be showing it off at PAX in Seattle, so we'll hopefully be able to see some good stuff from it, Nya~.

Its pretty cool that its getting a HD release. I am a fan of SA2, and now its coming to Xbox Live, PSN, and steam? Sounds like a good buy. (Correct me if it came out since 2 month old thread)
