This alike “Ham-Ham's Unite”
for the Game Boy Color is still at heart a socially interactive puzzle action
game. The way you interact with hamsters is by the “Hamchat” words in which you
can select one of each applicable words that you have to interact with the
hamsters in various ways. The Hamchat words get Hamtaro & Bijou to do
various sorts of actions such as slipping waving them hello to a bit more
complex cheers and the like. Though do be careful since they don't always appreciate
what you can do such as tackle them with “Tack-Q”. You get more Hamchat words
as you progress over time in the game in various ways. Those whom played HHU
will find a good amount of familiar Hamchat words such as “Stickie”, “Nopookie”
and “Go P”. However they did add in some interesting new Ham-chat words such as
“Delin-Q”, “Liber-T” and the like. It utilizes the technological potential of
the GBA very well with highly above-average graphics. The Control factor
however is still as genuinely smooth as its GBC counterpart which is quite
top-notch. Its excellence in the Control Factor all the more adds to its appeal
especially on how the gameplay is very easy to get into. Though alike that
earlier released GBC game, the Challenge factor is still nicely balanced.
“Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak” doesn't feel too easy to breeze through but it
doesn't feel too frustrating either. Music is pretty good as well, its no
“Legend of Zelda” series music but lets just say its certainly easy on the
ears. Though the music in this game also has a bit more of a variety in its
tunes such as dramatic fanfare to even Beethoven's classical music, so it has a
bit more than just a few cutesy tunes this time.
If you enjoyed Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! on the
Gameboy Color, you'll defiantly enjoy this romantic sequel. The main story of
the game is to simply bring love back to hamsters everywhere. From known
Ham-hams to hamsters you've never seen before. An evil devil-like hamster named
Spat is breaking up all love he can find. It's up to Hamtaro to save the day!
But he's not alone in this adventure, oh no. He pairs up with the cute French
hamster, Bijou. You two work together to bring love back to the Ham world...no
matter where it be found.
The game's graphics are bright and colorful. Based
right off of Ham-hams Unite! the game's are visually almost the same. Quite a
few graphical improvements on Heartbreak, due to Unite being one of the final
GBC games, and having the system at it's limit. Enjoyable for all, the cute
hamsters are free to walk and run around while communicating with adorable
little hamchat phrases and actions.
To reunite all the broken-hearted Ham-Hams
requires solving some VERY tricky puzzles. The gameplay is a lot like games in
the Monkey Island series or the previous Hamtaro game: talk to Ham-Hams, travel
to different areas, collect items and HamChats, solve puzzles, etc. There are
86 HamChat words to learn. These help you to solve puzzles and manipulate
items.
The Ham-Hams are nicely done. The game effectively
captures their look from the TV show. Every HamChat has a corresponding
animation, most of which are really nice. My only complaint in that the
backgrounds seemed a bit dull at times. Still, the Ham-Hams themselves are
relatively large and you'll be looking at them more than the backgrounds.
The controls are very simple and work well for the
game. The background music wasn't anything special, but the music you can
collect for the HamJam mini-game is great. Once you reunite the broken-hearted
Ham-Hams, collect all the gems, play a bit of dress up, and create a couple
HamJams, you're done with the game. The game itself is pretty long, but after
you have finished there isn't any real reason, other than for fun, to do it
again. Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak is, overall, a very fun game. I recommend it
to anyone who likes Hamtaro or a good puzzle/adventure game. Unfortunately, I
think the difficult puzzles in the game probably make it a bit too hard for
younger Hamtaro fans. xD
