Metroid Prime is an example of a modern classic. Well, semi-modern, seeing as it was released in 2002. I recently beat this game and thought why not do a review. This game is one of the best I have ever played. It is a mix of first person shooter and adventure genres. A wonderful one. But let's get down to specifics:
Graphics- 9
Today, the graphics are not mind blowing. But for the then-recently released Gamecube, these graphics are fantastic. The environments are full of life and energy. From the snowy areas to the hot depths of magmoor caverns, this game has a sense that just pulls you into another world. Your visor will fog up if hot steam is by your head or will have water dripping on it if it is raining or if you decide to take a dive. The amazing nature of Metroid Prime is fantastic.
Sound-10
The soundtrack to this game is wonderful. Its a fantastic synthesis of orchestra music and sci fi synths. It's truly fantastic. Not just the soundtrack but the weapons and enemies sound just like they should and fit in just fine.
Story- 8
While there is a great backstory to the game, it is all revealed through scanning. If you don't like reading then there will be very little story to experience. It's nice, but could be deeper. However you shouldn't expect an extremely deep story experience in Metroid games, as they rely more on gameplay than story. Still very good though.
Depth- 10
This is a game that begs to be explored. You will feel overwhelmed by the huge overworld at first, but it will pay off eventually and you'll get used to it. There is an extreme amount of depth in this game and the main story will take you at least 30 hours. 30 hours well spent. Not only that but the gameplay has much strategy to be used in boss battles, and they are always fun and worthwhile, unlike other games that throw extremely hard bosses at you that suck and are no fun.
Difficulty- 8
While not mind blowingly difficult, Metroid Prime offers quite a challenge. While challenging it never becomes frustrating. You can expect to die and retry areas and bosses multiple times towards the end..however it is a perfect difficulty that is just right. Not too easy, but not quite too hard.
With such depth and great gameplay, there is no reason for you not to get up and go to gamestop or amazon.com or ebay or whatever and PICK UP A COPY OF THIS GAME. It is regarded as one of the best games of all time. You'll understand once you play it. It provides a great fantasy sci-fi world for you to explore, imaginative and way cool enemies to fight, and just a fantastic overall experience that you can really get into. Now stop reading this and get a gamecube or wii and get this game. Better yet, buy all three. There's a trilogy for wii or get them individually. I'll leave you now so you can go do that.
